‎Col Charles Booth Brackenbury, RA [C B Brackenbury] (1831-1890), military historian and British Army officer in Crimea, and war‎

‎Col. Charles Booth Brackenbury R.A. military historian and Times correspondent. Autograph Letter Signed to his editor J. T. Delane on writing and reviewing after the Franco-Prussian war with claim to have ‘started the Intelligence Department’.‎

‎10 April 1874; from Hill Street Woolwich on letterhead of Hill House Woolwich S.E. An excellent letter casting light on the relationship between the editor of The Times and a senior correspondent. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. Brackenbury’s states that ‘During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 Brackenbury was the Times correspondent with the Austrian army and was at the battle of Königgrätz Sadowa — riding with Benedek under fire at Chlum — and reported the naval battle of Lissa. He was the Times correspondent in the Franco-Prussian War accompanying Prince Frederick Charles in the Le Mans campaign; and in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 when he crossed the Balkans with Count Gourko.’ 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition folded twice. Thin strip from windowpane mount adhering to edges in not unpleasing way. Signed ‘C. B. Brackenbury’ and addressed to ‘My dear Delane’. The letter begins: ‘Captain Clarke brought me today the last number of his translation of the German War of 1870-71. He is sending you a copy and I hope you will find some one to review it in my place.’ Brackenbury has himself translated ‘the Report of the Committee on French Army re organization together with the law as proposed and passed’ which the War Office is publishing. ‘You shall have the first copy issued which I will mark myself.’ In his opinion a great deal of the report ‘bears upon much more than French re-organization’. He will be very glad if Delane finds it ‘worth a notice’. He continues: ‘Though I may not write more on military affairs I don’t see why I should not review other books if you can find any for me. Even if you have no space for them at present the reviews might stand over till the interest of the new parliament is over.’ It seems to him ‘unnatural to have no work in hand for you’. The postscript reads: ‘They say that my review of Clarke’s first number started the Intelligence Department.’ 10 April 1874; from Hill Street [Woolwich], on letterhead of Hill House, Woolwich, S.E. unknown‎

‎Pilot Training Manual for Flying Fortress F-17; RESTRICTED‎

‎This appears to be reproduction due to the white borders on the pages. Comb binding. Good. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 100 pages. Illustration on front cover. Illustrations. Tabular Data. Cover has some wear and soiling. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps USAAC. Relatively fast and high-flying for a bomber of its era the B-17 was used primarily in the European Theater of Operations and dropped more bombs than any other aircraft during World War II. It is the third-most produced bomber of all time behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole twin-engined Junkers Ju 88. It was also employed as a transport antisubmarine aircraft drone controller and search-and-rescue aircraft. In a USAAC competition Boeing's prototype Model 299/XB-17 outperformed two other entries but crashed losing the initial 200-bomber contract to the Douglas B-18 Bolo. Still the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation then introduced it into service in 1938. The B-17 evolved through numerous design advances but from its inception the USAAC later the USAAF promoted the aircraft as a strategic weapon. It was a fast high-flying long-range bomber with heavy defensive armament at the expense of bombload. It developed a reputation for toughness based upon stories and photos of badly damaged B-17s safely returning to base. The B-17 saw early action in the Pacific War where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. But it was primarily employed by the USAAF in the daylight strategic bombing campaign over Europe. "Pilot Training Manual for the B-17 Flying Fortress" which was issued to B-17 pilots during World War II and was considered to be the "textbook of the B-17". The manual begins with a brief history of the B-17 and then goes on to explain to the pilot the duties and responsibilities of each of his crew members. Following this is a series of topics dealing with the characteristics and operation of the B-17 itself and how the crew should handle various emergency situations. From the Foreword: This manual is the text for your training as a B-17 pilot and airplane commander. The Air Forces' most experienced training and supervisory personnel have collaborated to make it a complete exposition of what your pilot duties are how each duty will be performed and why it must be performed in the manner prescribed. The techniques and procedures described in this book are standard and mandatory. In this respect the manual serves the dual purpose of a training checklist and a working handbook. Use it to make sure that you learn everything described herein. Use it to study and review the essential facts concerning everything taught. Such additional self-study and review will not only advance your training but will alleviate the burden of your already overburdened instructors. This training manual does not replace the Technical Orders for the airplane which will always be your primary source of information concerning the B-17 so long as you fly it. This is essentially the textbook of the B-17. Used properly it will enable you to utilize the pertinent Technical Orders to even greater advantage. unknown‎

‎Menasha WI: Aviation Publications 1989. Reprint edition of 1943 edition. Wraps. Good. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 2109 1 pages. Illustration on front cover. Illustrations. Tabular Data. Cover has some wear and soiling. The B-17F variants were the primary versions flying for the Eighth Air Force to face the Germans in 1943 and had standardized the manned Sperry ball turret for ventral defense also replacing the earlier 10-panel framed bombardier's nose glazing from the B subtype with an enlarged nearly frameless Plexiglas bombardier's nose enclosure for improved forward vision. The final production blocks of the B-17F from Douglas' plants did adopt the YB-40's "chin turret" giving them a much-improved forward defense capability. By the time the B-17G appeared the number of guns had been increased from seven to 13 the designs of the gun stations were finalized and other adjustments were completed. The B-17G was the final version of the Flying Fortress incorporating all changes made to its predecessor the B-17F and in total 8680 were built the last on 28 July 1945. Many B-17Gs were converted for other missions such as cargo hauling engine testing and reconnaissance. Initially designated SB-17G a number of B-17Gs were also converted for search-and-rescue duties later to be redesignated B-17H. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps USAAC. But it was primarily employed by the USAAF in the daylight strategic bombing campaign over Europe complementing RAF Bomber Command's night-time area bombing of German industrial military and civilian targets. Of the roughly 1.5 million tons of bombs dropped on Nazi Germany and its occupied territories by U.S. aircraft over 640 000 tons 42.6% were dropped from B-17s. Aviation Publications paperback‎

‎Confederate Army Captain F M Sherr‎

‎1865 & 1890 – Two Reconstruction certificates related to a former Virginia officer who served in the Confederate Army‎

‎Virginia 1890. Unbound. Very good. This lot consists of three items related to former Confederate Army Captain F. M. Sherry:

“An 1865 Richmond Loyalty Oath Certificate. The certificate is dated 24 July 1865 and measures 6.25†x 4.25â€. It is franked with a 5-cent Internal Revenue Certificate stamp Scott #R24. In signing the document Sherry swore that he would

““Henceforth faithfully support protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the union of the States thereunder; and that he will . . . abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves. . .â€

He also swore that he would

“Uphold and defend the Government of Virginia as restored by the Convention which assembled at Wheeling on the 11th day of June 1861.â€

The oath was countersigned by C. P. Bigger “Notary Public for the City of Richmond and County of Henrico in the State of Va.â€

An 1890 “Grand Monument†certificate - The certificate is dated 29 September 1890 and measures 9.25†x 5.75â€. The certificate which bears a serial number No. 761 was issued by the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association of Richmond Virgina recognizing his contribution of ten dollars

“To the fund for the erection of a Grand Monument to the memory of the Soldiers and Sailors of the Confederate Army and Navy on Libby’s Hill Marshall Park Richmond VA. / D. C. Richardson President / Carlton McCarthy Secretary / Wm. H. Cullingworth Treasurerâ€

The monument certificate is enclosed in a very scarce advertising cover for the Old Dominion Building & Loan Association that features a ‘picture frame collar’ surrounding the 2-cent Washington stamp Scott #220 that was used for postage. It bears a Richmond duplex postmark. F. M. Sherry a Richmond citizen served as Captain in the Confederate Army specifically in the defense of his city while assigned to George Washington Custis Lee’s Brigade and later within the Richmond Local Defense Troops during the final collapse of the Confederacy.

By December 1863 it had become clear that the Union which had already occupied wide swaths of the Confederacy needed to plan for the likely reintegration into the Union of former members of its armed forces. On the 8th of that month President Lincoln drafted an Oath of Allegiance which if signed by a former rebel would restore their U. S. citizenship and allow them to vote in elections. Following the war his draft was variously modified into loyalty oaths by the reconstituted governments of the Southern states. The document in this lot is Virginia’s version.

The Confederate Monument Association was formed in 1888 to raise a memorial to the Confederate veterans of the Civil War. The monument which featured a Confederate soldier standing atop a Corinthian column was designed by Wilfred Cutshaw to resemble Pompey’s Pillar in Egypt. It was built at a cost of $30000 and remained in place at the intersection of North 29th Street and Libby Terrace until Democratic Mayor of Richmond Levar Stoney used “emergency powers†citing public safety concerns regarding the ongoing nationwide protests and riots that occurred at the height of the “cancel culture†frenzy that followed the death of George Floyd to order the removal of all Confederate monuments from the city in 2020.

For more information see “F. M. Sherry†at the American Civil War Research Database President Lincoln’s “Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction†at the Freedmen and Southern Society Project website and Mayor Stoney’s official decree ordering the removal of Richmond’s Confederate monuments available online at YouTube.

Very scarce Virginia Reconstruction era documents. At the time of listing no other examples of them are available for sale in the trade. The Rare Book Hub shows none have appeared at public auction. OCLC shows no Richmond loyalty certificates are held by institutions; however it is likely some are contained within four other personal papers collections at the University of Virginia. It also shows no monument association donation certificates are held by institutions although it is almost certain that at least one is within the association’s papers collection which is held by the Virginia Historical Society. unknown‎
