Each air crew member carried among other survival supplies a .38 caliber pistol survival knife a signal mirror stainless steel or glass compass and some basic food rations fishing kit water purification tablets along with minor medical supplies; the whole kit was tucked into the pants pocket of the flight suit. . The majority of these perishable maps have been lost during World War II and very few survived the attrition of war time and humid climates. This map was considered the "LAST HOPE" for safe return to Allied lines. Given to fliers in the Pacific war against Japan. . Color photos are posted to our website. . . hardcover

US Army, 1930s
Late 1930s US Army Service Album at Ft. Benning Georgia and Ft. Williams Maine
Photo album documenting the military service of US Army soldier who was stationed at Fort Benning Georgia Ft Williams Maine and elsewhere mostly throughout the Northeast in 1934-1940. 149 black and white silver gelatin photographs mostly 2.5" x 3.5" in a suede bound Service Album measuring 11" x 7". Many photos captioned with names of fellow soldiers friends and placenames. Several photos of tanks including the older Mark VIII famous for its usage in WWI a French Renault tank a Ford 3 ton tank and the newer Christie tank. In addition to these shots of WWI tanks we see Doughboy Stadium at Fort Benning giving a slightly eerie impression in that the impact and legacy of WWI is still present and powerful all the while the world is lurching forward towards another cataclysmic war just months after many of these photos are taken. The soldier who put this album together had a keen sense of humor as did his comrades which one can pick up on in the autograph page at the beginning with names addresses and clever quips they left to be remembered by. Two larger photos measuring 7" x 5" of a woman he was close to named Betsy as well as a slightly smaller photo of a soldier of the 79th Infantry Division and his partner captioned J on verso. Several shots of beautiful natural landscapes in upstate New York Vermont Maine and elsewhere. This album's peculiar quality is in its depiction of a common soldier's relatively peaceful stint in the Army before all hell broke loose in WWII. Very few photos missing and album pages generally in very good shape; in very good condition overall. unknown
