He was a significant figure in the religious history of colonial America in particular in the Puritan churches of New England. One of his important contributions was the modification of the Half-Way Covenant which allowed the children of the baptised but non-converted church members to be baptised; he went further and allowed that the halfway members should be allowed to receive Communion. His work as a pastor and author helped to influence the leaders of the Great Awakening.
