It marks the transition from the drier approach of the Lutheran scholastics on questions of biblical criticism to those of the school of Philipp Spener with a more mystical approach. <br /> <br /> Binding age-toned and partly soiled. Contemporary previous owner's armorial bookplate G. Betz with motto "In hoc vinco" pasted on inside of front cover. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Contemporary previous owner's inscription at upper margin of front free endpaper. Sporadic minor to moderate foxing/age-toning throughout. Text in Latin with some Greek and Hebrew. About the author: Salomon Glass 1593-1656 was a German theologian and biblical critic who had studied primarily in Jena from 1609 onward became adjunct to the faculty of philosophy at the same university in 1619 and professor of Hebrew in 1621. The biblical encyclopedia "Philologiae sacrae" 5 vols. 1623-1636 constitutes Glassius's most significant work. Published 1691 small quarto 8.75 inches 22 cm old full vellum very good light splitting along front outer joint signs of a label removal to spine probably not institutional but private contents moderately tanned throughout. An impressive looking tome 80 1495 137 pp. This is the author's principal work published first in 1623 and considered a turning point in Biblical studies and criticism moving the entire field in the direction of Lutheran theologian Phillip Spener the Father of Pietism the principal arguments of which is to place individual faith and piety as central to Christian theology and pedagogy.
