Gespräch des Socrates mit Timoclea, von der scheinbaren und wahren Schönheit. - Diese dritte Ausgabe der "Prosaischen Schriften" nach 1758 und 1763/4 wurde nicht nur ohne das Vorwissen WIELANDS veranstaltet, sie ist gleichsam ein Affront gegen den Autor, der dem Züricher Verlag und besonders dem mit ihm befreundeten GESSNER lange die Treue gehalten hatte. Über die Jahre war es aber zwischem dem erfolgreicher und in gleichem Maß selbstbewusster werdenden Autor und dem Verlag immer häufiger zu Differenzen gekommen, die ihren Grund in WIELANDs Unzufriedenheit mit der Ausstattung der Bücher wie mit der unzureichenden Honorierung hatte. Darüberhinaus wuchsen in dem populärer werdenden jungen Autor die Zweifel an der Konkurrenzfähigkeit des schweizerischen Verlags. 1768 wechselte er zu "Weidmanns Erben und Reich" in Leipzig, "wo ihm ein weitaus höheres Honorar geboten wurde." (Bürger, Aufklärung in Zürich, S.107). Die unredigierte Neuausgabe von Texten aus seiner Zürcher Schaffensphase, die er als abgeschlossen und überwunden sah, traf WIELAND empfindlich. In der Rubrik "Anzeigen" der "Allgemeinen deutschen Bibliothek" (1772, Bd.16, S.314ff.) wandte er sich deswegen ausführlich an die literarisch interessierte Öffentlichkeit: "Ich finde nöthig das Publikum zu benachrichtigen, daß eine neue Ausgabe meiner ältern von 1754 bis 1760 verfassten prosaischen Schriften in Zürich ans Licht getreten, an welcher die Herren Verleger, aus unbekannten Ursachen, mich Antheil nehmen zu lassen ermangelt haben. Eine sehr natürliche Folge dieser mir höchst unangenehmen Vernachläßigung ist die Nothwendigkeit, worinn ich mich sehe, diese neue Ausgabe hiemit öffentlich zu mißkennen, und zu erklären, daß ich an derselben keinen Theil habe, hingegen mich, ja gewissermaßen das Publikum selbst, um so mehr dadurch beleidiget halte, da dieses Betragen der Herren Verleger mich ausser Stand gesetzt hat, diese Werke meiner unreifern Jahre, welche in Absicht der Sachen sowohl, als bei der Schreibart, einer durchgehenden Verbesserung höchst bedürftig sind, mit derjenigen Aufmerksamkeit zu überarbeiten, welche ich den Lesern und mir selbst schuldig zu seyn glaube; überdieß auch mir dadurch die schicklichste Gelegenheit entzogen worden ist, gewissen Leuten den Vorwand zu nehmen, womit sie ihre mutwillige Blindheit, die deutlichsten Dinge nicht zu sehen und in den begreiflichsten Dingen was unbegreifliches zu finden, vor dem großen Haufen zu beschönigen trachten.".‎

The Battle of Bunker Hill actually was fought on Breed's Hill site of the Willard's Bunker Hill Monument on June 17 1775. The first monument commemorating the major opening battle of the American Revolution was an 18-foot wooden pillar with gilt urn erected in 1794 by King Solomon's Lodge of Masons to honor the fallen patriot and mason Major-General Dr. Joseph Warren who was killed during the battle's third and final assault. From 1824 to 1842 Willard designed and built the present monument a 221-foot tall granite obelisk for which he also developed the granite quarry in Quincy Massachusetts that provided stone. The first railroad in the country was built to transport granite from that quarry to the waterfront where it was taken by boat to Charlestown and hauled to the building site. N. B.
