A collection of three devotional works bound in one by Salomon Gessner William Craig and John Bunyan illustrated with beautiful frontispieces. Three volumes in one.'The Death of Abel' is the second edition of this work published in 1788. However this does not appear to be a true second edition as the first English edition translated by Mrs. Collier was published in 1761 and as seen on ESTC there were many editions published between the first in 1761 and this edition in 1788. The work is however the second edition published by M. Brown in Newcastle who published their first edition of the work in 1787. ESTC citation number T201289. This is a scarce edition. Collated complete.'The Life of Jesus Christ' was published in 1788. This is a very scarce work with no records of it on ESTC or on Jisc. 'The Holy War' was published in 1787. ESTC citation number N17425. Text is continuous despite the pagination. Collated complete.'The Death of Abel' is illustrated with a frontispiece.'The Holy War' is illustrated with a frontispiece.'The Death of Abel' is a detailed description of the biblical story of the brothers Cain and Abel.'The Holy War' is a novel about the fictitious town 'Mansoul' a perfect town which sees its inhabitants rebelling and trying to overthrow their ruler. 'The Death of Abel' was originally written in German by Salomon Gessner and is translated here into English by Mrs. Collier. Gessner was a Swiss painter and poet.'The Life of Jesus Christ' was written by William Craig who was one of the ministers of Glasgow.'The Holy War' was written by John Bunyan who is best known for 'The Pilgrim's Progress'.Prior owner's ink inscription to the frontispiece of 'Death of Abel' 'See page 106'. Prior owner has obscured the line 'in five books' to the title page with ink the ink has offset onto the frontispiece and smudged. In a full calf binding. Externally the front board is detached but present and the rear joint is cracked. Rubbing to the boards and spine. Discolouration and marks to the boards and spine. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine heavier to the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the front joint with some lifting of leather. Two surface cracks to the spine to the head and tail. Rear hinge is strained. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with the odd spot and odd handling mark. Small closed tear to the tail of the frontispiece of 'The Death of Abel' not affecting image. Thompson London 4 x 7 inches tall full period leather bound five raised bands to spine folding engraved frontispiece xvi 237 1 pp. No date but ESTC places the date at 1770 prior owner dates his ownership at 1774. While the title page lists the publisher as 'T. Thompson' this is a false imprint according to ESTC. Covers are quite rubbed bumped and edgeworn. Front hinge is tender but holds. Folding frontispiece engraving is creased and torn with minor loss to the lower margin rule only. 1774 Boston prior owner name to top of title page. A few pages especially front prelims with soiling or foxing. Otherwise a very good copy of a scarce early edition of this influential classic. ESTC lists only two institutional copies worldwide - one at the British Library and the other at Duke University Library. Preserved in a Brodart rare book box made from archival-quality acid-free lignin-free 20-point light tan folder stock with a 3 percent calcium carbonate buffer securely held in place by Velcro buttons with title page reproduced on front cover of box and title on the spine of the box. An English translation of Solomon Gessner's 'Tod Abels' or 'The Death of Abel.' The translator is not named but this is believed to be an unauthorized 1770 London printing of a version of Mary Collyer's much-reprinted 1761 English translation. Reference: ESTC No. T94316. ~KKK~ Gessner 1730 - 1788 was a Swiss painter and poet. Collected editions of Gessner's works were repeatedly published 2 vols 1777-1778 finally 2 vols. 1841 both at Zurich. J.L.Lowes notes that Mary Collyer's translation of the original was as common as Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe': 'No book of foreign growth has ever become so popular.' He goes on to say that 'Byron read it when he was eight years old and denied with a little too much emphasis its influence on his play 'Cain.' The influence is equally clear for Samuel Taylor Coleridge he maintains: 'The Wandering Jew and Cain together took possession of the astral body of an ancient Mariner.' In Lowes J.L.
