King, Solomon
TOM THUMB. Four lines of verse.
<p>New York: Published by Solomon King 148 Fulton Street between 1829 and 1832. 1829 and 1832. Very good. - Miniature Book. Sexagesimo-quarto 64mo 3-1/4 inches high by 2 inches wide. Softcover bound in green pictorial stitched wrappers titled in black on the front cover. 8 pages illustrated with a wood engraving on each page. There is some minor scattered foxing. Very good.</p><p>RARE.</p><p>Apparently after Solomon King's death in 1832 the book was distributed by the publishers Turner & Fisher. At the foot of the front wrapper is printed "New-York & Philadelphia: Published By Turner & Fisher". The front wrapper bears the title "History of Tom Thumb" with the illustration of a pirate. Beneath the illustration is King's original statement on two lines "At King's Bookstore you're sure to find / Some little Book quite to your mind." The title page still bears the original publication information: "New-York: Published By Solomon King / 148 Fulton Street". The rear wrapper advertises "Books At One Cent Each Published ." The name of the publisher "S. King" appears on the copy of the book in the American Antiquarian Society collection but is deleted here. 12 titles including "Tom Thumb" are listed.</p><p>Turner and Fisher published in Philadelphia from 1834 and in Philadelphia and New York from 1835. They are not known to have published children's books after 1848.</p><p>The dating derives from Harry B. Weiss in his article "Solomon King Early New York Bookseller and Publisher of Children's Books and Chapbooks" Bulletin of the New York Public Library September 1947. According to Weiss Solomon King 1791-1832 moved his business "during 1829 and 1830 to 148 Fulton Street where he remained until 1832 when he moved again to 147 Fulton Street". He died September 14 1832 aged 41 during an epidemic of Asiatic cholera. Weiss also comments on the rarity of King's publications. In his last advertisement King "mentioned '400 kinds' of books. Of this number less than half are listed in the accompanying preliminary check list. Of the 187 titles in the list only 28 represent books actually located in libraries. The remainder represent titles advertised on the cover pages of King's publications." "Relatively few of his titles appear to be extant at present in comparison with those of Samuel Wood and Mahlon Day and this may be due to the comparative smallness of the original editions."</p> New York: Published by Solomon King, 148 Fulton Street, between 1829 and 1832. paperback

Ibn Verga, Solomon; Georg Gentius (Gentz; trans)
Historia Judaica res Judaeorum ab eversa aede Hierosolymitana ad haec fere tempora usque complexa. A History of the Jews from the Destruction of the Temple until Nearly the Present Day FIRST LATIN VERSION of SHEVET YEHUDAH an OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT of RENAISSANCE HEBREW LITERATURE
Amsterdam: Pieter Niellius 1651. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Small quarto. aster.-2aster.4 A-3M4 = 240 leaves. 16 464pp. Contemporary Dutch vellum very slightly bowed panelled in blind with central stamped vignette spine with raised bands and elegant calligraphic title. Title vignette depicting the arms of Amsterdam. A few old marginal annotations. Various old library stamps at title and bottom margins of two text leaves that on the final leaf bleeds through to text on recto. A very good copy text clean and fresh throughout attractively bound.<br /> <br /> First Latin edition of this late medieval chronicle of Jewish history "one of the outstanding achievements of Hebrew literature in the Renaissance" Enc. Jud. reprinted in 1680 under the Hebrew title Shevet Yehudah The Tribe of Judah. First published in Hebrew at Adrianople in 1554 it was followed by various Hebrew or Yiddish Judaeo-German editions prior to Gentius' version; a Spanish version appeared at Amsterdam in 1640.<br /> <br /> During the 1520s Solomon ibn Verga 1460-1554 wrote his Shevet Yehudah The Tribe of Judah a compilation of accounts of the persecutions undergone by Jews from the destruction of the Second Temple until his own day. At times the author intersperses the historical account with disputations and deliberations of which some are authentic and others imaginary. The author drew his historical material from Josippon the Sefer ha-Kabbalah of Abraham ibn Daud from the narrative of Nathan ha-Babli and from Maimonides’ letters including Iggeret Teiman. He also utilized a brief Hebrew chronicle dealing with the general expulsions and religious persecutions probably that of Profiat Duran and consulted the writings Isaac Abrabanel. For his own period he mentions some of the events which he heard of or witnessed and for which he is sometimes the only source. The work has special importance in the annals of Jewish historical thought. The thoughts and reflections which the author interweaves in his imaginary discussions that is in the literary and not the historical section of the work reflect his dissatisfaction with the traditional outlook and opinions of the Middle Ages.<br /> <br /> The Orientalist and diplomat Georg Gentius 1618-1687 was born in Dhame Saxony and came to study with Heinsius De Dieu Golius and L'Empereur in Leiden as well as the rabbis of Amsterdam. Among the latter Menasseh ben Israel respected Gentius for the courtesy he displayed in his scholarly and personal dealings with the Jews and asked him to complete a Latin translation of the Shevet Yehudah which he himself had begun. With this publication dedicated to the Hamburg consuls Gentius created a larger public for one of the most fascinating historical works of the Hebrew Renaissance and heralded a new era in Jewish history by its critical and empirical approach to the phenomena of history.<br /> <br /> Provenance: old entry of “Nicol. Nonnea D.†at title leaf. References: EJ 8:1203-05 noting the various editions along with Steinschneider 6982. Fürst 3:474. A. Salomon "Sal" Mikhailovich Flohr (1908-1983) <b><font color=blue>signed</b></font>
Black-and-white portrait postcard
<p>Black-and-white portrait card of Salo Flohr. Duodeimo 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". Signed by Flohr. Shows a half-length portrait of Salo Flohr.</p><p>Salomon Mikhailovich Flohr was a Czechoslovak and Soviet chess player and writer. He was among the first recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. Flohr dominated many tournaments of the pre-World War II years and by the late 1930s was considered a contender for the World Championship. However his patient positional style was overtaken by the sharper more tactical methods of the younger Soviet echelon after World War II.</p><p>Flohr's playing ability peaked in the mid-1930s when he became one of the world's strongest players and a leading contender for the World Championship. He became champion of Czechoslovakia in 1933 and 1936 and played in many tournaments throughout Europe generally finishing amongst the top three. Notable victories were at Bad SliaÄ in 1932 where he shared first place with Milan Vidmar; Scheveningen in 1933; Bad Liebenwerda in 1934 with 9½/11; Barcelona in 1935 where he tied for first with George Koltanowski; Moscow 1935 where he tied for first place with future World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik; PodÄ›brady in 1936 with the score of 10 −1 =6; and Kemeri in 1937 where he shared the top spot with Vladimir Petrov and Samuel Reshevsky. During this period he had several other notable high finishes such as Bern 1932 tied for second with 11½/15 after World Champion Alexander Alekhine; Zürich 1934 tied for second with 12/15 again trailing Alekhine; and Pärnu 1937 second behind Paul Felix Schmidt.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong>Sticker residue from pervious mounting to the verso of the card else very good.</p>

Following World War II he returned to his sports desk. He was the sports editor for the Post for forty-one years. He celebrated his retirement in 1973 but continued to write more than 500 pieces and cover the World Series for the Post. He would write about both the modern game and memories of years past. At the time of his death he was one of few working writers who had covered Babe Ruth. His final column was in the Post the day after his death at age 92. A collection of his columns All Those Mornings. At the Post was published in 2005. Derived from a Kirkus review: As Post readers once knew Shirley Povich was practically synonymous with the sports pages. Hired after caddying a golf match between New York Post publisher Joseph Pulitzer and Washington Post publisher Edward McLean and being genially argued over Povich went to work in D.C. in 1922 in that most legendary of ways: "Go up to the city room" an editor barked when he showed up "and tell Mr. Fitzgerald you're the new copyboy he's been asking for." Four years later Povich was sports editor and seven decades later he was still at his desk dying in 1998 just after finishing a column. Povich covered an extraordinary range of events some history-making. One was the 1938 run at Pimlico between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. Another was the 1924 World Series in which for the first and only time the Washington Senators won the title thanks to pitcher Walter Johnson. Strong on being in the right place at the right time-and in sheer longevity he also certainly knew his stuff. He knew his readers too: a perfect item for all those Washingtonians who miss reading Povich over their morning coffee. PublicAffairs hardcover

Limiting the Spread of Weapon-Usable Fissile Materials
Santa Monica CA: RAND National Defense Research Institute 1993. Presumed First Edition First printing. Trade paperback. Good. xxviii 102. Footnotes. Illustrations Tables and Figures. Glossary. Bibliography. Cover has some wear soiling and edge tear tear is also on title page. MR-346-USDP is printed on the back cover. This report examines the problem of rapidly accumulating weapons-usable fissile materials and proposes an agenda to help the United States and other countries manage these materials. Weapon-usable fissile materials come from dismantled nuclear weapons and the spent fuel from civilian nuclear power plants. This report is an important resource for nuclear nonproliferation planners and analysts and also to nuclear energy planners. This study was requests by the Office of the Deputy for Non-proliferation policy Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. There has been a concern that mismanagement of nuclear materials from weapon dismantlements might result in some of the materials being refashioned into nuclear weapons. This study found that countries including the United States have paid inadequate attention to an equally if not more serious potential danger on the civilian side. Another problem is the existence of commercial gas centrifuge and other sensitive enrichments technologies in nonnuclear weapon states. This study recommends that the United States initiate and encourage counters to undertake a four-element program for managing civilian nuclear development: reducing plutonium activities use proliferation-resistant modes of nuclear power plant operations focus research on advanced proliferation-resistant reactors and negotiating an international arrangement that allows sensitive civilian nuclear materials and facilities to exist and operate only in the five currently declared nuclear weapon states. Seay, Solomon S, Jr, with Boyd, Delores R
Jim Crow and Me; Stories From My Life as a Civil Rights Lawyer
Montgomery Alabama: NewSouth Books 2008. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good/Good. xxiii 1 152 pages. Includes Foreword Prefaceand Introduction Notes Index. Book has creases on pages 147-152 and in rear endpaper. DJ flap creased. Handwritten inscription on the Half Title page. The inscription reads: To Rosa M. Jeter We in the Livingstone College National Alumni Association and indeed the entire Livingstone College Community will be forever indebted to you for your loyal service and support throughout the years. Best Wishes Sol Seay 2-18-09. Attorney Solomon Snowden Seay Jr. 1931-2015 played an integral role in Alabama communities and courtrooms in support of the civil rights movement from the late 1950s into the 1990s. Seay most notably participated in court cases aimed at desegregating public facilities in Montgomery Montgomery County ensuring that Alabama counties enforced the integration of public schools mandated by state and federal courts and outlawing disenfranchisement practices dictated in the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He interceded in numerous causes around the state where white supremacists threatened the safety and livelihood of African American residents. Seay's legal activities demonstrate that the civil rights struggle was not restricted to urban areas in the Southeast but pervaded rural areas as well and that struggle persists into contemporary times. Delores R. Boyd practiced law for twenty-five years in her hometown of Montgomery Alabama before serving as a municipal court judge and a United States Magistrate Judge. Currently a mediator Boyd is a product of Montgomery's transition in the 1960s from a Jim Crow society. In a series of compact powerful vignettes he reveals the intimacies of dramatic courtroom moments; the complex personalities of segregation's victims heroes and oppressors; and the emotional highs and lows of using the law to seek justice where it too often had been an empty promise. Civil rights lawyer Solomon S. Seay Jr. chronicles both heartening and heartbreaking episodes of his first-hand struggle to achieve the actualization of civil rights. Tempered with wit and told with endearing humility Seay's memoir Jim Crow and Me: Stories from My Life as a Civil Rights Lawyer gives one pause for both cultural and personal reflection. With an eloquence befitting one of Alabama's most celebrated attorneys Seay manages to not only relay his personal struggles with much fervor and introspection but to acknowledge in each brief piece the greater societal struggle in which his story is necessarily framed. Jim Crow and Me is more than just a memoir of one man's battle against injustice-it is an accessible testament to the precarious battle against civil injustice that continues even today. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by Fallingwater 1935 which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture." As a founder of organic architecture Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century influencing three generations of architects worldwide through his works. Wright was the pioneer of what came to be called the Prairie School movement of architecture and he also developed the concept of the Usonian home in Broadacre City his unique vision for urban planning in the United States. Solomon Robert Guggenheim February 2 1861 - November 3 1949 was an American businessman and art collector. He is best known for establishing the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Guggenheim was born into a wealthy mining family and he founded the Yukon Gold Company in Alaska among other business interests. He began collecting art in the 1890s and he retired from his business after World War I to pursue art collecting. He eventually focused on modern art under the guidance of artist Baroness Hilla von R creating an important collection by the 1930s and opening his first museum in 1939. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum often referred to as The Guggenheim is an art museum located at 1071 Fifth Avenue on the corner of East 89th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan New York City. It is the permanent home of a continuously expanding collection of Impressionist Post-Impressionist early Modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting under the guidance of its first director Hilla von R. It adopted its current name after the death of its founder Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1952. In 1959 the museum moved from rented space to its current building a landmark work of 20th-century architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The cylindrical building wider at the top than at the bottom was conceived as a "temple of the spirit". Its unique ramp gallery extends up from ground level in a long continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. Solomon R.
