[ALMANAC - FRENCH]. TESTU, Laurent Etienne (publisher).
Almanach impérial pour l’an XIII = 1804-1805 présente a sa Majesté l’Empereur par Testu.
Paris 1804. Large 8vo ca. 19.5 x 12 cm. L.É. Testu Contemporary gold-tooled tree marbled calf with an ornamental border on both boards a richly gold-tooled spine with red calf title-label lettered in gold gilt board edges gilt edges marbled endpapers. With the engraved coat-of-arms of the First French Empire on the title-page and numerous letterpress tables. 16 832 pp. Attractively bound copy of this interesting French almanac for the year 1804-1805 ‘An XIII’ i.e. year 13 counted from 1792 the period running from 23 September 1804 to 22 September 1805 according to the French Republican calendar which was used from 1793 to 1805. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs i.a. annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. It is concluded with an extensive index pp. 817-824 and a supplement pp. 825-832 which is not always present in most copies we could trace. The French publisher Laurent Étienne Testu 1765-1839 worked from 1788 for the French printer François Jean Noël Debure 1743-1802 who was the son-in-law of the French printer Laurent Charles d’Houry 1723-1786. The family of D’Houry had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debure’s printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleon’s coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. Testu was appointed imperial publisher to Napoleon until his abdication in 1814.With the 19th-century oval bookplate of the French military Albert Le Lorier "Sous-Intendant Militaire" mounted on the front paste-down. The head of spine is slightly chipped/damaged the corners of the boards are slightly worn. The title-page is slightly stained in the outer blank margin two text leaves Oo2 and Zz5 are re-attached probably replaced and their outer blank margins are slightly shortened otherwise a beautiful binding in very good condition.l Grand-Carteret Les almanachs français no. 1433. hardcover

De kleine tydwyzer of jufferlyke almanach voor den jaare 1797.
Amsterdam 1796. 16mo ca. 63 x 30 mm. Jan van Gulik Contemporary decorated wrappers side stitched through two holes. The work is inserted into a contemporary mother-of-pearl chemise with a silver spine and a metal clasp. With an engraved title-page 5 numbered double-page engravings and an engraved text page on the sounding of the bell of the Amsterdam Gate. 24 ll. Exceptionally rare 1797 edition of a miniature almanac in the original mother-of-pearl chemise. The almanac was published by Jan van Gulik in Amsterdam from at least 1781 to 1797 but is very rare with only one or two copies known for each year. The present copy is currently the only recorded copy for the year 1797. The almanac has been beautifully printed and is easily legible despite its small size. It includes eclipses for the year 1797 a calendar five short stories and two poems and is illustrated by five double-page engravings depicting amorous scenes. The title-page and final page have been engraved on the same double-leaf which has been wrapped around the rest of the work. "Amongst the almanacs printed in the Netherlands the very finely produced De Kleine Tijdwijzer of Jufferlijke Almanach is outstandingly attractive" Bondy. The mother-of-pearl boards are broken lacking the upper corner of the front board with a crack in the front and the back. The wrappers are somewhat stained from the silver a small water stain in the fore edge margin of the leaves the first plate is detached but still present. Otherwise in good condition.l This edition not in the STCN; Worldcat; cf. Arthur A. Le joli Pont-Neuf ou recueil de chansons; vaudevilles &c. Almanach nouveau.
Amsterdam" = Paris sold in Paris 1762. 24mo 9.5 x 5.6 cm. Duchesne Contemporary gold-tooled French red morocco fine green gold and white brocade paper endpapers with a foral pattern. Each page printed in simple woodcut border with several small head and tailpieces. 40 ll. Only known copy of a beautifully bound French almanach for the year 1763 accompanied by many popular songs. The survival of the present almanach is extremely rare as we have not been able to trace any other copy from the same year and only one set of similar almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The present work is a charming miniature almanac which contains - besides the usual calendar for the year 1763 - several songs mainly love songs but also bacchic songs and "les plaisirs de la critique". The last three pages contain a bookseller's catalogue of other contemporary French almanachs. The title page and the last page show some slight colour offsetting of the pastedowns some occasional minor foxing. Otherwise in very good condition.l This edition not in Grand-Carteret; STCN; WorldCat; cf. WorldCat 470104514 a set of the same almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the BnF. unknown

Calcutta: Samuel Smith and Co. at the Bengal Hurkaru Press 1836. 8vo. Contemporary gold-tooled crimson goatskin with the title and year of publication lettered in gold on the spine.
