‎Nutzlicher Haus-Kalender oder der Richtige Bot aus das Jahr Christi 1824‎

‎Argau Switzerland: Jakob Diebold 1823. Very Good. 4to. 48 pp. Pictorial wrappers stitched as issued. Tables printed in black & red lower page corners folded some moderate edge wear a bit of foxing or staining. Well worn but generally very good with a few small tears along edges. An extremely scarce 1824 provincial Swiss Almanac well illustrated with curious woodcuts including an elaborate title-page border in the neo-classical style back cover depiction of the slaughter of the Greek patriarch a double-page fold-out plate of a castle in Baden small dirt stain at top and twelve emblematic woodcuts depicting astrological attributes of each month. Owing to the fact that only one other copy seems to have survived it is not surprising that we have been unable to locate reproductions of any of these woodcuts published elsewhere. The title-page woodcut appears to have been signed in the border the artist / engraved "Z. Morman." Several of the woodcut zodiac symbols are signed "Z."

Jakob Diebold a bookbinder took over the publication of this Haus-Kalender a.k.a. the Swiss "Baden Kalendar" from Heinrich Joseph Keiser sometime after 1808 during which time he ran both the bindery and the Baldinger printing press. Sales of the almanac under Diebold greatly improved largely due to the improving economic and intellectual conditions of Baden. This calendar contains a "Directory of school books children's writings and writing materials which are available from B.J. Diebold book printers and bookbinders in Baden." The almanac includes a report on the New Year i.e. 1824 a directory and covers a range of topics including chronology astronomy astrology and herbal medicine.

The ZB Zurich has scattered holdings of Diebold's publication namely: 1811-1812; 1819-1821; 1824 the present year 1825-1826; 1831; 1837; 1846. ‎Le Calendrier de la Cour tiré des Ephémerides . Pour l’annee Mil sept cent trente-neuf. Imprimé pour la Famille Royale et Maison de Sa Majesté‎

‎Paris: Jacques Collombat 1739. 36mo binding size 108 x 55 mm. 72 pp. a single quire of 36 leaves the first and last leaves mounted on the free endpapers and printed on visible sides only. Woodcut royal arms on title 2 astronomical woodcuts typographic moon symbols in calendar. Double rule page borders. Publisher’s case binding of olive morocco covers gold-blocked with very wide rocaille border Dutch-gilt free endleaves pastedowns removed gilt edges small loss to border of lower cover inner backstrip archivally reinforced some scuffing to lower cover.

A nice example of one of the longest published Parisian almanacs published without interruption from 1700 to 1792 and containing useful information for ladies and gentleman of the Court. Invented by the printer-publisher and typefounder Jean-Jacques Estienne Collombat 1668-1744 the Calendrier de la Cour became a familiar fixture of court life. These little books continued to be referred to as “Collombats†long after the printer’s death when their publication was continued by the printer Hérissant and later his widow.

Printed in a very small but easily legible typeface designed by Collombat the calendar with its ephemerides uses numerous typographic astrological symbols which he only started using in 1730 when he was finally able to have small enough symbols designed and cast as he stated in his 1731 issue cf. Grand-Carteret. The remaining text contains information of interest to the Court: lists of officials and their various charges births and deaths throughout the European royal families prominent members of the clergy etc. At the end are tables of practical information: a table of proper expenses for various annual incomes from 10 to 100000 livres the age of the world or a table of wine prices by muid an ancient unit of measure used for liquids and grains.

These almanacs were used by virtually all courtiers and ladies at Court and the bindings and cover materials reflected their owners’ ranks. The present pretty gold-blocked covers of fine material but relatively simple to produce and probably commissioned by the publishers would have been considered appropriate for an official or lady of relatively low standing.

Cf. Grand-Carteret Les Almanachs français no. 92 and p. XLI.
Jacques Collombat unknown‎

‎ALMANAC — EMBROIDERED BINDING‎

‎L'Amour victorieux ou Les Conquêtes de Cypris. Almanach chantant‎

‎Paris: chez la Veuve Depoilly et chez Jubert 1784. 24mo binding size 98 x 58 mm. Etched and engraved title 24 pages a single 12-leaf quire A 16-page calendar for 1785 bound in middle of quire 12 etched and engraved “plates†printed on 6 conjugate bifolia rule page borders throughout one or two borders shaved. A fine copy in a contemporary case binding of embroidered ivory faille silk over binders’ boards both covers with a central wheat sheaf of couched purl and vermeil sequins in a pot of green threads symmetrical purl ribbons and sprays above and below the ground with small green flowers and sequin accents double outer border of sequins and intertwining metallic thread spine with saltire design of metallic thread and sequins salmon watered silk doublures with hammered vermeil ribbon borders framing a mirror on the upper cover and on the lower cover a pocket free endpapers of pink on gold brocade paper printed on one side only gilt edges. Outer corner of front cover very slightly stained and fraying a ribbon border inside lower cover detaching the mirror intact but its tin backing turned to powder and shedding slightly through the spine.

A delightful almanac in a fetching embroidered binding which expresses the golden sun of the harvest abundance and joy. In pictures and verse this almanach galant relates love’s approaches evasions and eventual conquest using an extended military metaphor. Hence captions like “the diligent vigil the gracious combat marauding cupids a lucky rally the double attack the capitulation†etc. grace the hardly warlike images. The women in petticoats ribbons and flowery hats wear the latest fashions.

In an unusual modern touch the image of the etched title showing a couple in a boat with a fortress and galleon in the background continues behind the title lettering. The engraved illustrations of courting and sometimes modestly contorting couples are in dark vivid impressions. In this copy unlike the Grand-Carteret copy the sixth and seventh plates were printed on the same sheet in the wrong order and thus the captions are mismatched.

The embroidered cover of the binding was applied slightly awry on the lower cover.

OCLC lists the BnF copy only. Cf. Savigny de Moncorps Almanachs illustrés du XVIIIe siècle 1909 no. 55 p. 104; Meunié Bibliographie de quelques almanachs illustrés des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles 1906; Grand-Carteret 1143: the same almanac with full-page illustration but bearing the title of the 1793 Goguettes Parisiennes his no. 1192.

chez la V[euv]e Depoilly, et chez Jubert unknown‎

The slot in the front cover to insert the folding tab from the lower cover protected the volume from Dutch weather and the lower cover contains a pocket for loose papers or even money.

The Amsterdam comptoir almanacs were issued yearly by successive members of the Stichter printing family from 1728 to the mid-19th century. Unlike their French counterparts these Dutch almanacs were generously proportioned being at least originally intended for the “counters†of merchants and businessmen rather than for gentlemen’s or ladies’ pockets. The calendars were always interleaved and the contents were standard: one page is devoted to each month containing a half-page woodcut above a blank space for notes on the recto and the monthly calendar on the verso. These woodcuts each with a tiny inset astrological sign show indoor and outdoor scenes: ice-sports in December and January a family huddled by the fire with boisterous children in the background in February tree-trimming and pruning in March gardening in April a pastoral scene with lovers in May sheep-shearing in June and so on. The blocks are here quite worn.

Following the calendar are postal and transportation schedules by coach or ship 3 pages of astrological predictions and a short chronicle of the year 1734 someone forgot to update the sheets.

The contemporary reader who used this almanac / notebook and whose hand seems feminine to me was a student of history. The first 16 and 1/2 pages at the beginning of the blank leaves contain a list of Roman emperors. Toward the end of the blank leaves are 32 pages on the succession of the Dukes of Flanders titled “Opvolgengen der Graven von Holland uit het Goudasche Kronyken.â€

Short-Title Catalogue Netherlands 328765627. heirs of the widow of C. ‎ALMANAC/EPHEMERA GASSER Achilles Pirmin.‎

‎THE FIRST COPERNICAN ALMANAC
THE EARLIEST VERNACULAR ANNOUNCEMENT OF COPERNICAN HELIOCENTRISM
SOLE KNOWN COPY
Practica auff das M.D.XLvj. jar/ durch Doctorem Achillem P. Gasser L. zu Feldkirch gemacht‎

‎4to. 20.5 x 15.4 cm 12 ff. With two title woodcuts of Mars and Luna. Patterned paper over boards with vellum spine; title-plaque on front cover; some expert reinforcement and minor repairs at gutter. Paper has even browning some faint waterstaining with marginal notations on one leaf.

The sole known copy of a prediction pamphlet mein Almanac Gasser calls it f12 recto for the year 1546 with the first extended reference to Copernicus printed in a vernacular language German -- an "enthusiastic hymn of praise" for the great astronomer Burmeister addressed not specifically to an international community of scholars but to lay readers of a humble German language almanac whose daily activities "revolve" around the sun. Gasser further acknowledges here heliocentrism as a "hypothesis… demonstratively proven among mathematicians" i.e. a physical fact – a stance virtually unique among astronomers who were generally cautious with their approbations of Copernicus' calculations and methodology in the early years on the road towards its gradual positive reception.

Achilles Gasser was intimately connected with the dissemination of heliocentrism through his patronage of Georg Rheticus Copernicus' student who initiated and oversaw the 1543 publication of De Revolutionibus. Gasser was one of very few recipients of the Narratio Prima intended to drum up support for Copernicus' work and wrote the preface to the 1541 edition of it. Gasser also owned a copy of De RevolutionibusGingerich I.99 printed by Johann Petreiuswho not coincidentally also published the present pamphlet. Alongside Rheticus' Narratio Prima of 1540 and Gasser's preface to the second edition of that work in 1541 the Practica offered here represents one of the very earliest published expressions of support for Copernican heliocentrism in any language.

The extended reference to Copernicus appears in Gasser's dedicatory letter to Caspar Joachim Täntzl a Tyrolean nobleman and mine owner. Gasser takes pains to heap praise upon the most learned and wonderful man Dr. Nicolaus Copernicus who away off in Prussia has taken up the task with such seriousness diligence and steadfastness that for the establishment and restoration of astronomy he has had to lay an utterly and completely new foundation unheard of before or rather has been compelled to posit hypotheses not employed by other scholars…namely that the Sun is a light for all creation and stands unmoved in the midst of the whole universe; that this earthly realm… variously courses round between the planets Venus and Mars. and thus has not only demonstratively proven his theory among the mathematicians and with great pains restored the portrait of Astronomy but has also immediately been regarded as having perpetrated a heresy and indeed—by many others incapable of understanding this matter—is already being condemned see the complete Danielson translation of the epistle below.

Numerous scholars penned prediction tracts or almanacs in this era including another Petreius author Johannes Schöner; Gasser wrote one for each year from 1544 and 1547. He makes general predictions for the luckiest days of 1546 B4v—as well as specifics relevant for mine owners like Täntzl— for example the relative value of precious metals B3. Part farmer's almanac and part horoscope Gasser's predictions depend on the movement of celestial bodies. His investment in propagating the importance of heliocentrism in this seemingly modest tract should therefore come as no surprise.

According to Dennis Danielson in the article cited below Gasser also penned on the same day and year a Latin version of the present almanac with a different dedicatory epistle addressed in this case to Rheticus in which he urges the acolyte of the great astronomer to continue his efforts to prove the truth of the Copernican hypothesis. He tells the younger scholar in a manner of speaking that his job isn't finished yet and to get on with it. Several printed copies of this Latin version exist in German institutions but none in America.

Offered here a well-preserved unique copy of the earliest example of vernacular Copernican ephemera. This present sole known copy now recorded in VD16 as ZV 28055 with 'Martayan Lan New York' as the source was only 'discovered' in the late 1990s by the respected historian of science Karl Heinrich Burmeister through the late Zurich bookdealer Jörg Schäfer.

TEXT OF EPISTLE folios 1v-2r

To the noble and worthy Caspar Joachim Tantzl of Tratzberg etc. his most gracious and beloved master Achilles Pirmin Gasser of Lindau doctor of natural and medicinal arts extends his willing service and best regards.

Noble worthy and gracious master Your Worthiness doubtless still remembers the disputation that you often engaged in with me not without exceeding amazement concerning astronomy while I was in your service in Schwatz last year and above all the conversation in which – with the help of a small book I had with me eventually to be printed – I expressed my desire for a large lodestone whereby the course of the Sun and also the disposition of the firmament which in the schools we call the Primum Mobile though we know not where of what it is would here on Earth be rendered calculable and thoroughly perceptible in such a way that no more defects so frequent until now should appear.

Moreover as I then indicated to Your Worthiness the greatest masters of this art have continuously for seventeen hundred years found the movement of the stars and planets rather incongruous and imperfect according to their instruments and calculations indeed even according to their daily experience. For this reason one after the other they always kept on hoping to adjust improve and remedy this situation by means of clever contrivances and ingenious speculations as is evident in Hipparchus Ptolemy Al-Zarqali Al-Bitrui Cusanus Regiomantanus and finally Werner with each on correcting the other now inventing new spheres then discarding the old ones and thinking up something else and on and on with no end of cycles epicycles and theoricae – until now so recently in our own day also the most learned and wonderful man Dr. Nicolaus Copernicus away off in Prussia has taken up the task with such seriousness diligence and steadfastness that for the establishment and restoration of astronomy he has had to lay an utter and completely new foundation unheard of before or rather has been compelled to posit hypotheses not employed by other scholars namely that the Sun is a light for all creation and stands unmoved in the midst of the whole universe; that his earthly realm together with the other three elements and the circuit of the Moon variously courses round between the planets Venus and Mars; and also that the heavens beyond Saturn in which are seen the fixed stars all together stand fast and unmoved with no other spheres encompassing them etc. and thus has not only demonstratively proven his theory among the mathematicians and with great pains restored the portrait of Astronomy but has also immediately been regarded as having perpetrated a heresy and indeed – by many others incapable of understanding his matter – is already being condemned.

Since now Your Worthiness has for the benefit of this art and sundry other things promised to extract and provide me with a large lodestone from your mine I have a good will to see progress in this matter and am moved to put these my Practica for the coming year 1546 into writing for as Your Worthiness has no meagre capacity in astrological predictions to make discriminations and record nature's signs – which however must be derived solely from the courses of the planets and their position or placement relative to the other stars – You may easily weigh how very necessary it is that he who can help advise and give impetus to such an undertaking should do so in order that it can actually be brought to fruition.

So I hoped to in particular that I might in part accomplish this by means of a large lodestone. I would like therefore to ask Your Worthiness to execute the specificied transaction and to be gracious to accept this my published dedication in your honour for I remain ever willing whenever I may to demonstrate to Your Worthiness my love and service.

May God in heaven be with us and likewise ever protect your noble and virtuous wife and dear children.

Feldkirch Monday 27 July 1545.

Burmeister "'Mit subtilen fündlein und sinnreichen speculierungen.'".
