WASHINGTON - CITY AND CAPITAL SIGNED
Washington: Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. Octavo xxvi 1140 pages; VG-; Spine black with faded gold print; Boards in black cloth mild wear and rubbing binding slightly loose; With both of the two maps in rear pocket; small water-stain to lower fore corner of text block.;<br /> <br><br /> <br><br /> Signed on verso of the ffep by 26 members of the Federal Writers Project including founding director Henry Alsberg assistant to the director George Cronyn and assistant director Reed Harris. The remainder are presumed some of the writers or editors hired by the Federal Writers Project to research the book including composer Ruth Crawford Seeger anarchist Leonard Abbott and author/editor Kathryn Coe Cordell. Other listed names include C. W. Foster Donald C. Kline J. Frank James Howard S. Douglas John C. Rogers B. Foster Cooke and Sterling A. Brown.;<br /> <br><br /> <br><br /> An important piece of DC history linking the leadership of the FWP with some of its largely ignored and unrecorded writers and editors. Nowhere in the volume does it list the names of any individual contributors. Due to the book size and coated paper the book weighs over 5 pounds reportedly causing President Franklin D. Roosevelt to ask "Where is the steamer trunk that goes with it"<br /> <br><br /> <br><br /> Preface: "The volume on Washington herewith given to the public differs in at least one important respect from the guides to other large cities now being prepared. Washington is predominantly the Capital of the United States. Visitors to the city are commonly interested as much in the machinery of national government as in the great buildings which house that machinery. Therefore a considerable portion of this volume is given over to detailed accounts of the functional activities of all Government departments bureaus and independent agencies." 1331800. THE MIGRATORY-CASUAL WORKER EFFECTS OF THE WORKS PROGRAM ON RURAL RELIEF: A Survey of Rural Relief Cases Closed in Seven States July Through November 1935 and MIGRANT FAMILIES;
Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition. Wraps. Good. By examining the experience of the transient program this report has been able to isolate a number of widely-held misconceptions about transients and transient relief. Analysis of the reasons why migrant families left home and of their subsequent travels reveals that they were not - as is so commonly believed - irresponsible and degraded groups addicted to chronic wandering. On the contrary a large majority of them were habitually settled and self-supporting families dislodged by the depression and seeking reestablishment elsewhere. The families left home not only because they were in distress but also because of a reasonable expectation of an improved status at their destination." WPA Research Monograph VII XIII and XVIII. Tall octavo three volumes. Original printed gray paper wrappers. Some general wear and soiling with a previous owner's ink signature on the front panel of each volume.
