Bound in the original blue laminated boards lettered in white. 7" wide by 10" tall. From the front matter: "In 2005 The United Nations launched its Decade of Education for Sustainable Development which recognises that education including Higher Education is the key to the change in social attitudes that will be needed to protect the welfare of future generations. This involves helping learners to live as though the future matters and to achieve ecoliteracy. This includes the understanding that personal lifestyle decisions may have consequences ranging from climate change through loss of biodiversity to pollution and resource depletion that may permit environmental degradation on a planetary scale. It also involves helping them to develop the skills needed to cope with such challenges. This international collection of research papers and position statements from special issues of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education and Applied Environmental Education and Communication written by many of the leading practitioners in the field aims to provide resources and practical guidance for all seeking to promote and engage in education for a sustainable future. Rabindranath Tagore encouraged each learner to make their actions demonstrate a harmonious union between education and environment. David Orr argued that the world needs people who live well in their places to make the world both habitable and humane and that the main challenge for education is to help learners make their minds fit for life on Earth. This book tries to chart a practical route towards these objectives. This book was previously published as special issues of the JOURNAL OF GEOGRAPHY IN HIGHER EDUCATION and APPLIED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION.". First Edition. Hardcover. The Congress was held from 5 to 12 September 1932 and he delivered his report La préparation théorique et pratique des professeurs de mathématiques de L'Enseignement secondaire dans les divers pays which was published in full in 1933 in L'ENSEIGNEMENT MATHÉMATIQUE. This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his ink stamp signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954 from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician ICM. Bound in the original biege cloth stamped in dark blue on the spine. From the dust jacket: "In TRYING BIOLOGY Adam R. Shapiro convincingly dispels many conventional assumptions about the 1925 Scopes 'monkey' trial. Most view it as an event driven primarily by a conflict between science and religion. Countering this Shapiro shows the importance of timing: the Scopes trial occurred at a crucial moment in the history of biology textbook publishing education reform in Tennessee and progressive school reform across the country. He places the trial in this broad context -- alongside American Protestant antievolution sentiment -- and in doing so sheds new light on the trial and the historical relationship of science and religion in America. For the first time we see how religious objections to evolution became a prevailing concern to the American textbook industry even before the Scopes trial began. Shapiro explores both the development of biology textbooks leading up to the trial and the ways in which the textbook industry created new books and presented them as 'responses' to the trial
Today the controversy continues over textbook warning labels making Shapiro's study -- particularly as it plays out in one of America's most famous trials -- an original contribution to a timely discussion." . First Edition. Index. Bound in the original blue cloth stamped in bright white on the spine. From the dust jacket: "For much of the twentieth century there was broad political support for public funding of American higher education. Liberals supported public investment because it encouraged social equity conservatives did so because it promoted economic development. Recently however the politics of higher education have become more contentious. Conservatives advocate deep cuts in public financing; liberals want to expand enrollment and increase diversity. At the same time some public universities have embraced privatization while federal aid for students increasingly emphasizes middle-class affordability over universal access. In PUBLIC FUNDING OF HIGHER EDUCATION scholars and practitioners address the complexities of this new climate and the impact of recent trends on policy and on political advocacy at the federal state and institutional levels. Rethinking traditional rationales for public financing contributors to this volume offer alternatives for policymakers administrators faculty students and researchers struggling with this difficult practical dynamic. From the dust jacket: "At twenty-two Dan Brown came to the Bronx's P.S. 85 in the Bronx as an eager fresh-faced teacher
Unbeknownst to him his assigned class 4-217 was the designated 'dumping ground' for all fourth-grade problem cases and his students would prove to be more challenging than he could ever anticipate. Intent on being a caring dedicated teacher but confronted with volatile children absent parents and a failing administration Dan was pushed to the limit time and again: he found himself screaming with rage punching his fist through a blackboard out of sheer frustration often just wanting to give up and walk away
Yet in this seeming chaos he gradually learned from his mistakes and from the more seasoned teachers around him and discovered an unexpected well of inspiration to discipline and teach and make a difference
THE GREAT EXPECTATIONS SCHOOL is the touching journey of Class 4-217 and their teacher Mr. Brown. It is also the revealing story of this country's broken educational system and all those struggling within and fighting against it.". Signed by the Author his signature only. Academic Freedom Imperiled : The McCarthy Era at the University of Nevada
Reno & Las Vegas: University of Nevada Press 2004. BRAND NEW in a BRAND NEW dust jacket. Perfect condition. NOT price clipped $29.95. NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright shiny clean square and tight. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. First Edition with "First Printing" so stated and complete number row 54321 on the copyright page. A volume from the Wilbur S. Shepperson Series in Nevada History. List of chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. Bound in the original dark gray cloth stamped in shiny silver on the spine. From the dust jacket: "The 'Red scare' of the 1950s created a national crisis that challenged concepts of loyalty and freedom of speech in every corner of American society. The crisis was especially problematic in American universities where traditions of academic freedom found themselves at odds with political issues growing out of the Cold War. The University of Nevada in Reno was no exception. The university before and during World War II was a small school offering basic programs to a largely Nevada-based student body in the nation's least-populated state. The campus was quiet secure traditional and generally conservative. The postwar years brought booming enrollments and new faculty members with liberal views and growing disputes over the practice and purpose of higher education. The 1952 appointment of Minard W. Stout as president triggered the crisis. Mandated by a conservative Board of Regents to 'clean up' the university Stout brought to his new job a keen sense of mission and a strident commitment to an authoritarian top-down chain of command. His subsequent battles with faculty and students quickly degenerated into angry accusations of faculty Communist sympathies and bitter confrontations over academic free speech academic free speech university governance and loyalty. Soon the university found itself embroiled in an intense controversy that threatened its academic integrity and even raised concerns about its future as a viable institution
J. Dee Kille's lively account of the crisis 'on the hill' records a critical period in Nevada's recent history and serves as a powerful case study of the devastating impact of McCarthyism and its atmosphere of suspicion and repression on one American university campus during this turbulent era in the nation's history.".
