The Province of Jurisprudence Determined
2012. ISBN-13: 9781584770237; ISBN-10: 1584770236. Austin John. The Province of Jurisprudence Determined. Originally published: London: John Murray 1832. xx 392 lxxvi pp. Reprinted 2000 2012 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584770237; ISBN-10: 1584770236. Hardcover. New. $28.95 Austin introduced theories of analytical jurisprudence and positive law in this landmark book which also became the founding text of legal positivism. This reissue of the only edition published during his lifetime long unavailable will be of great interest to researchers historians libraries and scholars of jurisprudence. John Austin 1790-1859 is best known for developing the theory of legal positivism. After serving in the military he read law and was called to the bar in 1818. He abandoned his practice when he was appointed to the first chair of Jurisprudence at the University of London in 1826 a post he held until 1835. His work was greatly influenced by Jeremy Bentham a close friend. Austin was the dominant English legal theorist for over a century. As indicated by the criticism of H.L.A. Hart his work remains vital today. unknown books

Austin John; Robert Campbell editor
Lectures on Jurisprudence or the Philosophy of Positive Law. 5th ed.
2014. ISBN-13: 9781584774297; ISBN-10: 1584774290. Austin John. Lectures on Jurisprudence or the Philosophy of Positive Law. Fifth Edition Revised and Edited by Robert Campbell. Originally published: London: John Murray 1885. 2 Vols. xxiii 507; xiii 509-1132 pp. Reprinted 2004 2014 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584774297; ISBN-10: 1584774290. Hardcover. New. $125. Reprint of the fifth and best edition of Austin's magnum opus. First published in 1863 this work is a landmark in the development of modern legal thought. Its most important contributions are the strict delimitation of law and its distinction from morality the elaboration of the idea of law as a kind of command and the close examination of such common legal terms as right duty liberty injury and punishment. Widely regarded as the best this fifth edition edited by Campbell had a profound influence on several important Anglo-American jurists such as Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. "No writer whom we know had more of the qualities needed for initiating and disciplining other minds in the difficult art of precise thought. Though the merit and worth of his writings as a contribution to the philosophy of jurisprudence are conspicuous their educational value as a training school for the higher class of intellects will be found we think to be still greater. Considered in that aspect there is not extant any other book which can do for the thinker exactly what this does. Independently of the demands which its subject makes upon the attention not merely of a particular profession but of all liberal and cultivated minds we do not hesitate to say that as a mere organon for certain faculties of the intellect a practical logic for some of the higher departments of thought these volumes have a claim to a place in the education of statesmen publicists and students of the human mind." --JOHN STUART MILL The Edinburgh Review 118 October 1863 139 JOHN AUSTIN 1790-1859 was the founder of English analytical jurisprudence and the first to subject the law to inductive analysis. When University College London was founded in 1826 he was appointed its first professor of jurisprudence a subject that had previously occupied an unimportant place in legal studies. Austin, Hugh
DRINK THE GREEN WATER or Young Caldwell's Toe
N.Y.: Charles Scribner's Sons 1948. 1st ed. Light wear along edges else near fine gold cloth hardback in dust jacket worn at edges darkened at spine and with a few chips small piece out at rear. .Sultan. Sultan & Sultan Counselors at Law was the mustiest and most dignified of New York law firms. Its only earthly representative was Wm Sultan an old young man of extreme decorum who busied himself with the preparation of his uncle's Life & Letters. Only in one respect did the offices of Sultan Sultan & Sultan differ from the other aged and decorous offices which were its neighbors and that was Sultan's Harem though the phrase would have horrified Wm. The Harem was Sultan's office staff which Wm had chosen with unconscious yet certainly unerring taste. There was Roberts the. blonde receptionist an athletic girl with a strong will and a demure way with callers which was a business asset and a complete fraud; Kelly the brunette secretary who had a sardonic affection for her employer and whether he knew it or not more than her share of grey matter; and .Morgan the red-headed file clerk who was unpredictable in everything including filing. All three were pretty gay irrepressible-and bored to death with the Life & Letters. They wanted excitement and most of all a livelier Wm Sultan. They got both along with several murders in the affair of Young Caldwell's Toe. Wm Sultan happy though he was among the dusty letters and dustier legal phrases wasn't the dry fellow he appeared to be. When he sniffed a mystery in the stilted correspondence of Charles Silliman and its connection with Young Caldwell's Toe he set to work. When tottering Henry Harrison Perdue reading one of the Silliman letters expired at his desk and when shortly thereafter Wm himself received a heavy and totally unexpected blow on the back of the head he grew all the more determined. At Greenwater a summer place of faded elegance on Long Island Wm Sultan met the possible heirs to the Silliman fortune; and there too he met murder. Courteous and dignified as ever Wm took things in hand and proved himself a Man of Action--to the delight of the Harem. For of course he hadn't escaped them when a mystery was brewing; unasked and even in disguise they arrived at Greenwater and rushed into the fray in peculiar and hilarious ways. Not in a long time has crime been tackled by so attractive and entertaining a team of sleuths as Wm Sultan and his Harem. The story of their first case crackles with good dialogue and moves through deceptive complications with suspense and high comedy. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Book. Bias in the Zundel Case - Understanding History
Canada: Samisdat 2000. Book. Very Good. Paperback. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 20 pages. Circa 2000. An 80 point memorandum of law filed by Ernst Zundel's lawyers in 2000. Sets out facts and argues that Justice Campbell's Federal Court of Canada decision was correct regarding bias and that Zundel should not have been forced to be judged by a Canadian Human Rights Commission tribunal in the circumstances extant. "In a May 14 1998 editorial entitle 'Justice Deniers' the Ottawa Citizen wrote that since the Human Rights Tribunal had been found to be systematically biased 'it is not possible for Mr. Zundel or anyone else to have a fair hearing before a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal as these tribunals are now constituted.' Ernst Zundel continues to fight to obtain justice before a fair and impartial tribunal. His case will be the standard against which the rights of all other Canadians will be measured." - from page 2. Clean and unmarked with light wear. Circa 2000. Samisdat Paperback
