Ces pièces, qui s’échelonnent de 1316 à 1433, ont pour la plupart été rédigées dans le Hainaut — parfois d'ailleurs dans des villes maintenant françaises, telles que Le Quesnoy et Valenciennes — mais d’autres ont vu le jour dans les diverses principautés des Pays-Bas et l’une même dans le bailliage d’Amiens. Mais l’origine disparate de cet ensemble n’en diminue pas l’intérêt, puisqu’il s’agit uniquement de testaments, d’avis de père et de mère (partages anticipés conclus conjointement par le père et la mère assistés d’amis des deux parties) et de contrats de mariage. Les historiens du droit trouveront dans dans ces textes — publiés in extenso — tout un bagage d’exemples concernant le régime matrimonial et le droit de succession. Mais le philologue, le toponymiste, l’historien de la vie religieuse ou de l’économie pourront également y faire leur profit.
