Typed letter signed dated November 20 1947 on 4 Essex Court Temple E.C. 4 imprinted letterhead 1.5 pages single-spaced; written to Cipe Pineles 1908 - 1991 award-winning Austrian-American graphic designer the first woman director for many influential publications including Mademoiselle Seventeen and Charm on the Vogue London staff and also involved in socialist and communist activities in Europe and America. The first part of the letter details Molly Pritt's thanks for various articles of clothing sent to her by Pineles and others due to the shortages in post-war Britain. Especially "the problem of shoes for women and growing childrenwhich were such a comfort to me in Russia and indeed here" She writes of her husband N.P. Pritt's trip to the U.S. and the kindness of Pineles and her husband during his tour. She looks forward to accompanying him on a return journey and "I believe I could be very useful.During the war when I was vice chairman under the Dean of The Joint Committee for Soviet Aid I addressed literally thousands of meetings in all parts of the countryin huge ordnance factories town halls womens organisations and so on and even at a big boxing match 7000 people in the Albert Hall here! So I am quite an expert with all types of audiences. If his plaudits from the people's democracies were fulsome he also knew the less pleasant experience of professional and social ostracism at home. His wife less political than her husband apparently found their moments of isolation especially trying." Kevin Morgan in the ODNB Pritt's wife Marie Frances Mollie Gough 1895-1999 whose influence and impact is minimized in the biographies and relegated to a supportive role to her husband's activities was much more significantly involved as this letter proves. 19,3x13,1 cm; 30 pp. brossura editoriale con titolo in rosso e nero entro cornice rossa al piatto anteriore. Prima non comune edizione di questo intervento del grande uomo politico foggiano. Fu tra i fondatori, nel 1921, del Partito Comunista d'Italia partecipando attivamente, come componente della frazione capeggiata da Amadeo Bordiga, alla scissione di Livorno. Entrò infatti nel primo Comitato Centrale del PCd'I. Abbandonate, dopo qualche anno, le posizioni di Bordiga, si schierò con Antonio Gramsci, che gli affidò il compito di organizzare la sezione agraria e, insieme a Giuseppe Di Vittorio, fondò l'Associazione di difesa dei contadini poveri. Fu condannato durante il fascismo a 17 anni di carcere. Fu uno dei principali funzionari di collegamento fra il Partito Comunista Italiano e l'Internazionale Comunista. Eletto nell'Assemblea costituente nel 1946, nella Repubblica italiana fu eletto senatore nel 1948, carica che mantenne fino alla morte, avvenuta durante un comizio a Massa Lombarda (Ra) nel 1955. A parte qualche piccola macchiolina di foxing ai piatti, dovuta alla luce e alla qualità della carta, ottimo esemplare.

Sa che l’esercito sta richiamando i riservisti. Il 29 aprile, a Salisburgo, nel loro ennesimo incontro Hitler e Mussolini lo hanno stabilito: il colpo da infliggere alla Russia dev’essere "immane, tremendo e definitivo». Vavilov guarda già con rimpianto alla sua isba e alla sua vita, pur durissima, e con angoscia al distacco dalla moglie e dai figli: «...sentì, non con la mente né col pensiero, ma con gli occhi, la pelle e le ossa, tutta la forza malvagia di un gorgo crudele cui nulla importava di lui, di ciò che amava e voleva. Provò l’orrore che deve provare un pezzo di legno quando di colpo capisce che non sta scivolando lungo rive più o meno alte e frondose per sua volontà, ma perché spinto dalla forza impetuosa e inarginabile dell’acqua». È il fiume della Storia, che sta per esondare e che travolgerà tutto e tutti: lui, Vavilov, la sua famiglia, e la famiglia degli Šapošnikov – raccolta in un appartamento a Stalingrado per quella che potrebbe essere la loro «ultima riunione» –, e gli altri indimenticabili personaggi di questo romanzo sconfinato, dove si respira l’aria delle grandi epopee... E se Grossman è stato definito «il Tolstoj dell’Unione Sovietica», ora possiamo finalmente aggiungere che Stalingrado, insieme a Vita e destino, è il suo Guerra e pace.
