London: Swan Sonneschein & Co. 1897. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this important work on the Crimean War by Karl Marx. An uncommon work. A collection of letters articles written from 1853 to 1856 by Karl Marx during the Crimean War concerning the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and Russian imperialism towards Turkey. The Crimean War was a military conflict fought from October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of France the Ottoman Empire the United Kingdom and Sardinia. The immediate cause of the war involved the rights of Christian minorities in Palestine which was part of the Ottoman Empire. According to Karl Marx's writings around the Crimean War the main factor of the Eastern Question was Russian imperialism towards Turkey - with Turkey being a barrier that would protect the rest of Europe and thus England's interests laid with the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War. Penguin Books / New Left Review. Paperback. Fair. The most important of Marx's political writings in this 400-page collection are "The Civil War in France" and the "Critique of the Gotha Programme." It also includes important documents of the International Working Men's Association -- the First International -- and Marx's polemics against Proudhon and Bakunin. All the texts written in German and French were newly translated by David Fernbach. He provides a cogent critical analysis of Marx's thought and activism across the period. Marx resumed political activism in 1864 and became a leader of the IWMA. Modern industry and the industrial working class had grown since 1848 as had trade unions. The issue of reformism was critical and Marx's view was not simplistic. Previous owner's signature on back of front cover. Fading and sunning to cover spine and text.
