L'universo demoniaco creato dalle diverse civiltà ha sviluppato, nel corso dei millenni, un variegato sistema culturale dalle innumerevoli sfaccettature, favorendo la nascita di un ricco patrimonio etnologico. L'immaginario collettivo, la tradizione popolare, la letteratura e l'arte molto spesso presentano infatti la figura del diavolo in maniera diversa da quella descritta nei testi sacri e vista secondo i canoni dottrinali. In genere il folklore tende a mitigare la cattiveria del diavolo, che spesso finisce per essere ingannato dall'astuzia dell'uomo, soprattutto in occasione della costruzione di edifici arditi o nella ricerca di un tesoro. In altri casi, invece, l'opera dei demoni assume connotati terribili e pericolosi, per esempio nei luoghi infestati, siano essi palazzi o ambienti naturali come grotte, foreste, orridi e montagne. Il libro presenta un "itinerario diabolico", elencando una serie di luoghi ritenuti pericolosi e segnati da una fama sinistra per la presenza di entità maligne, molto spesso accompagnate dalle immancabili streghe. Nel corso dello studio si propongono all'attenzione del lettore, oltre alle leggende dall'aura tenebrosa, oggetti straordinari, animali dai poteri inquietanti e personaggi tormentati.‎
