Nel periodo di massimo splendore del movimento nazional-romantico venne acclamato come un capolavoro poetico nato spontaneamente in seno al popolo finlandese e, da allora, la sua fortuna è cresciuta fino a diventare un fenomeno planetario. Questo libro rivela i complessi processi culturali che hanno reso il Kalevala un mito esso stesso: la nascita degli studi folklorici e mitologici in Finlandia, le personali idee di Lönnrot e i suoi viaggi etnografici, l'importanza dei più celebri cantori, il successo del Kalevala in patria e all'estero, l'importanza del poema per il futuro movimento indipendentista. Incontriamo gli dei, immaginati con fattezze mortali eppure irrimediabilmente diversi da noi: Afrodite abbagliante nata dalla spuma del mare, Zeus che inganna con le sue metamorfosi. Azioni quotidiane come nutrirci, un destino ordinario come invecchiare, un concetto centrale come l'identità, una paura radicata come quella della morte, acquistano in questa riflessione una profondità nuova. Dall'immersione tra storie e archetipi usciamo rigenerati: più saggi, più capaci di bellezza.
