United States Congress House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice
Marajuana and Medicine: The Need for a Science-based Approach: Hearing before the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice Drug Policy and Human Resources of the Committee on Government Reform House of Representatives
Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office 2005. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket. iii 352 p. Title continues: One Hundred Eighth Congress Second Session April 1 2004. Serial No. 108-226. From Wilipedia: Medical Marajuana "Medical cannabis refers to the parts of the herb cannabis used as a physician-recommended form of medicine or herbal therapy or to synthetic forms of specific cannabinoids such as THC as a physician-recommended form of medicine. The Cannabis plant has a long history of use as medicine with historical evidence dating back to 2737 BCE. Cannabis is one of the 50 "fundamental" herbs of traditional Chinese medicine and is prescribed for a broad range of indications. One of the major criticisms of cannabis as medicine is opposition to smoking as a method of consumption. However smoking is no longer necessary due to the development of healthier methods. Today medicinal cannabis patients can use vaporizers where the essential cannabis compounds are extracted and inhaled. In addition edible cannabis which is produced in various baked goods is also available and has demonstrated longer lasting effects. The United States Food and Drug Administration FDA issued an advisory against smoked medical cannabis stating that "marijuana has a high potential for abuse has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States and has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision. The National Institute on Drug Abuse NIDA state that "Marijuana itself is an unlikely medication candidate for several reasons: 1 it is an unpurified plant containing numerous chemicals with unknown health effects; 2 it is typically consumed by smoking further contributing to potential adverse effects; and 3 its cognitive impairing effects may limit its utility". The Institute of Medicine run by the United States National Academy of Sciences conducted a comprehensive study in 1999 to assess the potential health benefits of cannabis and its constituent cannabinoids. The study concluded that smoking cannabis is not recommended for the treatment of any disease condition but did conclude that nausea appetite loss pain and anxiety can all be mitigated by marijuana. While the study expressed reservations about smoked cannabis due to the health risks associated with smoking the study team concluded that until another mode of ingestion was perfected that could provide the same relief as smoked cannabis there was no alternative. In addition the study pointed out the inherent difficulty in marketing a non-patentable herb. Pharmaceutical companies will not substantially profit unless there is a patent. For those reasons the Institute of Medicine concluded that there is little future in smoked cannabis as a medically approved medication. The report also concluded that for certain patients such as the terminally ill or those with debilitating symptoms the long-term risks are not of great concern. Marinol was less effective than the steroid megestrol in helping cancer patients regain lost appetites. A phase III study found no difference in effects of an oral cannabis extract or THC on appetite and quality of life QOL in patients with cancer-related anorexia-cachexia syndrome CACS to placebo. "Citing the dangers of cannabis and the lack of clinical research supporting its medicinal value" the American Society of Addiction Medicine in March 2011 issued a white paper recommending a halt to using marijuana as a medicine in U.S. states where it has been declared legal." National Committee to Secure Justice in Rosenberg Case
TRANSCRIPT OF RECORD. SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES OCTOBER TERM 1951. NO. 111 JULIUS ROSENBERG AND ETHEL ROSENBERG PETITIONERS VS. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. NO. 112 MORTON SOBELL PETITIONER VS. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. PETITIONS FOR WRIT OF CERTIORARI AND EXHIBIT THERETO. FILED JUNE 7 1952
New York: National Committee to Secure Justice in the Rosenberg Case 1952. Eight volumes bound in original printed tan title wrappers. 1715 3 Index pp. Each page printed in two columns each column numbered as a page. Oblong 8vo 7-1/4" x 5-1/4". Stapled as issued. Some toning of wrappers else Near Fine. <br /> <br /> Nearly seventy years after they were executed for espionage even after the opening of the USSR's secret Venona files the guilt or innocence of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg remains a subject of controversy. A National Committee to Reopen the Rosenberg Case the successor to the National Committee to Secure Justice to the Rosenbergs is active to this day. The trial like that of their contemporary Alger Hiss was enveloped by the early years of the Cold War. Added to the mix was the fact that the Rosenbergs were Jewish as were their prosecutors Irving Saypol and Roy Cohn and the trial judge Irving Kaufman. There is little doubt that significant prejudicial conduct occurred at trial including ex parte meetings with the trial judge and the introduction of inflammatory evidence which had little probative value. <br /> The National Committee published this Record "confident that the dispassionate reader will perceive the gross miscarriage of justice that cries out for redress." The Committee claims that David and Ruth Greenglass the government's "main witnesses" were themselves spies whose testimony was tainted by their desire to avoid the death penalty. There was no documentary evidence of the Rosenbergs' guilt. Indeed the prosecution whipped the jury into an anti-Communist frenzy; and the sentence of death was "barbaric. JUSTICE, Donald
Sixteen Poems
Iowa City: Stone Wall Press 1970. Limited Edition. Softcover. Fine. Quarto unpaginated. A fine copy in the publisher's prown printed wraps very slightly offset on the rear wrap. A pleasing association copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Justice on the first leaf to fellow poet Mark Strand and his wife Antonia: "To Mark & Antonia Strand as the dedication was supposed to have read Don Justice May 1970." There is no printed dedication. While there is a lenghty Acknowledgments section Justice simply thanks a number of publications for allowing his poems to be reprinted here. As such given the content of the inscription this may be the closest thing to a "dedication copy" imaginable. Merker the printer writes: "One of the things that was hard for me was that Don didn't really appreciate what I was trying to do. It was hard to get very enthused about doing a book for someone who would not appreciate what you had done no matter how well you did it." Berger 40. Justice's passive-aggressive inscription seems to corroborate Merker's account of the tension between author and publisher. Stone Wall Press unknown

Autograph Letter Signed 'David Pollock' from the future Sir David Pollock Chief Justice of Bombay to John Silk Buckingham regarding the British and Foreign Institute and a controversy in The Times.
Monmouth. 30 Ocotber 1843. 2pp. 12mo. 29 lines of neatly-written text. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Addressing his letter to 'J: S: Buckingham Esqre.' Pollock writes that Buckingham's letter 'enclosing the Rules &c. of the British and Foreign Institute' has been forwarded to him in Monmouth where he is 'engaged on a long Circuit professionally which comprehends all South Wales and the West and South of England'. He is 'on the move continually' without 'time or opportunity to give sufficient consideration to the subject'. He will 'return to Town' in December when he will 'take an early opportunity of making my appearance as a member of the Committee' and will 'confer' with Buckingham: 'I see you have had to answer an attack as some one has taken the trouble to send me a Copy of the "Times" of the 25th. inst. which accompanied a Letter from you . You need not complain as you have evidently a triumph upon all the points started.' According to Buckingham's entry in the Oxford DNB in 1844 he was 'instrumental in the foundation of the British and Foreign Institute in Hanover Square. This literary and social club of which he was appointed resident director drew the ridicule of Punch which persisted in calling it the ‘Literary and Foreign Destitute’. The institute was closed in 1846.' Pollock was appointed Chief Justice of Bombay in 1846 and knighted in the same year. Monmouth. 30 Ocotber 1843. unknown

Sir Alexander James Edmund Cockburn (1802-1880), 12th Baronet, Lord Chief Justice of England:
Sir Alexander James Edmund Cockburn Autograph Letter Signed 'A. E. Cockburn' to Thomas Cruttwell solicitor of Bath; together with Signed photograph of Cockburn from the studio of Henry Dixon Regent's Park London.
Letter dated 5 April 1846; Castle Taunton. Photograph undated. Letter: four pages folio. Good with a little aging and staining to verso of second leaf of bifolium. In Cruttwell's absence Cockburn has taken it upon himself 'to settle Richardson & <Sumsun>. Taylor has communicated the result of his interview with Hellings the previous evening. 'He informed me that he had seen certain letters written by the Defendants to Mrs. Richardson in which he solicited her to leave her husband and to bring away with her money and goods belonging to the husband'. Taylor recommends that Hellings' offer of £50 be accepted. Cockburn has seen the letters and 'they fully bear out Mr. Taylor's account. I thought the correspondence so discreditable to the Defendant that especially as he must necessarily have called witnesses andn so the Plaintiff's cause wd. have had a reply - I thought it very likely the Jury wd. give connsiderable damages - to say nothing of the disgrace .' Discusses Cruttwell's reluctance to have his 'name mixed up with the defence'. He is certain his opinion would have been shared by Cruttwell had he 'seen these letters'. After consulting 'Mr. Phinn' he has reached a verdict of '50£ including the goods the property in which is to remain in the Defendant'. In a postscript describes how the plaintiff's husband has 'not only denied her to bring away money & furniture but articles of jewellery such as a gold shirt pin of the husbands which he sd. would become him better'. The sepia photograph roughly 9 x 5.5 cms is of Cockburn's head and shoulders. Beneath the image he has written 'Yours truly A. E. Cockburn'. Printed details of Dixon's studio on reverse which bears traces of previous mounting. Also included is an attractive piece of paper with a blind-stamped decorative border somewhat like a doily within which in a contemporary hand 'A letter written by Sir Alexander Cockburn Lord Chief Justice of England'. Letter dated 5 April 1846; Castle Taunton. Photograph undated. unknown
