Willoughby Charles A. Major General with a Preface by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur
Shanghai Conspiracy The Sorge Spy Ring
New York: E. P. Dutton & Company Inc. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1952. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean bright condition. There is some very beginning rubbing and wear to the book covers along with some beginning bumping to the spine ends. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has several edge tears nicks and wrinkles. The reverse of the dust jacket has been taped along the spine ends and corners. Both the author Charles Willoughby and the subject of this book Richard Sorge have fascinating mixed histories -- Sorge was born in Imperial Russia and moved to Germany in his early youth. Willoughby was born in Germany and moved to the United States during his teenage years. Willoughby had a long and somewhat distinguished career in the Army both in World War I and World War II and beyond that into the Korean War. During World War II he became the Chief of Intelligence as part of Douglas MacArthur's staff - interestingly he had always had a fascist background which didn't play much into World War II but did seem to affect his career in the Korean War. Sorge on the other hand had ties to the communist hierarchy family members were associated with both Marx and Engles and he became a member of the party while recuperating from injuries received in World War I. After being recruited as a spy in the 1920's and participated in a number of operations both in Germany and later in Japan. In Japan he was directed to discover information about the Nazi Party and anything to do with anti-communism based in Japan. During this time Sorge suppposedly warned Stalin about the the Pearl-Harbor Attack and even possibly gave a drop date for Operation Barbarossa which was largely ignored by the Soviets. The Japanese became increasingly suspicious of Sorge's actions and he was arrested in 1941. He was convicted of spying and was executed in 1944. . E. P. Dutton & Company, Inc. hardcover
