John H. Dortmans
Brabanders in Canada : Their Heritage in the Netherlands, Their Experiences in Canada
319 pages. Many black and white reproductions of photos plus some colour photos. Intended to "preserve some of the history of Noord-Brabant's post-WW2 emigrants to Canada. This includes a portrayal of the games they played, their religion with some of its strengths as well as some of its weaknesses, their attitudes, their revered symbols, their humour, and of course their struggles and assimilation into Canadian society. I also want to provide a timeless link between Canadians of Noord-Brabant origin and their roots in the Netherlands." - from Foreword. Somewhat above-average wear to glossy black illustrated boards. Unmarked. A worthy copy of this important genealogical work. Book

Johnson, Leo A.; Guelph Historical Society
History of Guelph, 1827-1927
389 pages. Index. Black and white illustrations. "This book attempts to provide answers to a number of questions: why did Guelph grow and develop when other centres such as Rockwood and Hespeler remained much smaller? Why, on the other hand, given the strenuous efforts of the business community to promote Guelph's growth, did it never achieve the size and dominant position to which its leaders aspired? What were the ideologies, strategies, and consequences of growth and the failure of dominance? Finally, what were the periods and nature of the development of Guelph's major social institutions and organizations. In a word, what I have tried to achieve is an outline of Guelph's development upon which other historians could build a broader and more refined understanding of Guelph's social history." - from Preface. Book clean, bright and unmarked with light wear. Average wear to dust jacket which is partially sunned to spine. A quality copy. Book

Johnson, Mary Coffin; & Percival Brooks Coffin (from the Library of Frank A Vanderlip)
Charles F. Coffin A Quaker Pioneer. Preceeded sic by Earliest Historical Period of the Coffin Family
Richmond Indiana: Nicholson Printing Company 1923. Very Good condition. Light cover soil. Square tight copy. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Frontispiece portrait of Coffin. Includes a genealogical "Pedigree" at the end. Original green cloth. With the bookplate of Frank A. Vanderlip 1864-1937 Assistant Secretary of the Treasury 1897 to 1901; President of National City Bank Citibank 1909 to 1919. Vanderlip played a key role in the creation of the Federal Reserve System. In 1906 it was Vanderlip who convinced many in New York's banking establishment that a banker-controlled central bank would serve their financial interests. Vanderlip and the chiefs of many of America's major corporations and banks met in 1910 at the Jekyll Island conference. Traveling anonymously the group left secretly by rail from Hoboken New Jersey before congregating at a hunting lodge. Although a system of twelve regional banks was designed the regional concept was a ruse to keep the public from thinking that the Federal Reserve would be controlled from New York. In 1935 Vanderlip wrote in the Saturday Evening Post: "I do not feel it is any exaggeration to speak of our secret expedition to Jekyll Island as the occasion of the actual conception of what eventually became the Federal Reserve System." Vanderlip is also credited with the famous quotation: "A conservative is a man who does not think that anything should be done for the first time." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover.
