Johnson, Leo A.; Guelph Historical Society
History of Guelph, 1827-1927
389 pages. Index. Black and white illustrations. "This book attempts to provide answers to a number of questions: why did Guelph grow and develop when other centres such as Rockwood and Hespeler remained much smaller? Why, on the other hand, given the strenuous efforts of the business community to promote Guelph's growth, did it never achieve the size and dominant position to which its leaders aspired? What were the ideologies, strategies, and consequences of growth and the failure of dominance? Finally, what were the periods and nature of the development of Guelph's major social institutions and organizations. In a word, what I have tried to achieve is an outline of Guelph's development upon which other historians could build a broader and more refined understanding of Guelph's social history." - from Preface. Book clean, bright and unmarked with light wear. Average wear to dust jacket which is partially sunned to spine. A quality copy. Book

Jones George F.
German-American Names
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 2006 2008. Third Edition. Trade Paperback. 354 pages. Have you ever wondered about the meaning of German names Ever been puzzled about their origin or stumped by their sometimes impossible combination of sounds Have you ever wondered about the difference or similarity between Schaeffer and Shafer or Baugh and Bach Most of us have and Professor George F. Jones has thoughtfully put together an answer for us-an A-Z dictionary of German- American names giving spellings meanings and variants of about 18000 names. This third edition of his acclaimed German-American Names is longer than the earlier editions and has several thousand more entries. Like the earlier editions it attempts to explain the meaning of names borne today by Americans which derive from the German language or its dialects. Moreover it deals with the Americanization of some of those names explaining the social and historical phenomena that contributed to the distinctive character of German- American names. And it deals as well with names many of us would never have thought of as German. To place the dictionary in proper perspective Prof. Jones has provided a lengthy introduction on German names- actually a treatise-with chapters devoted to 1 the origin and significance of given names; 2 the need and origin of surnames; and 3 Christian names. A substantial work in itself the introduction discusses the development of German names name sources name variations and some of the special characteristics of German-American names. But of course it's the dictionary that is paramount. A lifetime's accumulation of German-American names and their meanings its very convenience invites browsing. Best of all the dictionary is for everyone. German names are so widespread there can be few people who will fail to find something of interest in a German-American name list. . Psychic Roots: Serendipity and Intuition in Genealogy
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 1993 2008. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Index. 236 pages. Psychic Roots is all about the influence of coincidence and serendipity on genealogical research the chance combination of events over which the researcher has no control but which nevertheless guides him to a fortuitous discovery. Certainly chance or dumb luck sometimes leads us straight to a record kept in an improbable place to an ancestor's second wife we didn't know anything about and so on. Is it luck Coincidence In this book esteemed genealogist Hank Jones tells us about his own brushes with preternatural experiences and he has invited other genealogists to share their experiences as well; thus in these pages we have the insights of well over a hundred respected ancestor hunters who discuss their experiences in light of synchronicity intuition genetic memory and serendipity. Their stories fairly crackle with illumination and make a plausible case for the importance of the sixth sense in genealogical research. . Genealogical Publishing Company paperback
