A new edition. With three folding maps of theRoman Empire and frontispiece of Gibbon to volume Icollated complete. Gibbon offers an explanation for why the Roman Empire fell a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources though he was not the only historian to tackle the subject. Most of his ideas are directly taken from what few relevant records were available: those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries. Gibbon's prose the vehicle for this subtle historical vision has been found by some to be decorous and mannered to a fault. Perhaps this estimation relies on no very close reading since Gibbon's writing arguably does exhibit change and development within an overall continuity of manner. But if it were truly so then this would enforce the judgement that the Decline and Fall is a very different book when viewed in the perspective of literary aesthetics rather than as a contribution to a series of intellectual debates. For in the latter the Decline and Fall is remarkable for the way Gibbon pushed at the edges of received opinions and found fresh and fruitful ways of linking approaches and subjects which elsewhere lay unconnected. It is for this reason that the Decline and Fall occupies the summit of European Enlightenment historiography. It engages with carries forward and extends what is most vital in that body of writing.
