Sans visage pourtant, ou d'un geste le dévoilant à peine, les bustes funéraires de la nécropole de Cyrène, uniques dans la statuaire antique, inclassables et sans date, rappellent que l'exubérance vitale se fond aux ombres de la mort. Son nom est à présent indissociable du site qu'il a fait renaître : le complexe funéraire du roi Djoser à Sakkara. Cet ensemble architectural, unique dans l'art égyptien, gisait en ruine sous les sables autour de la fameuse pyramide à degrés lorsque Lauer jeune architecte, commença à l'étudier en 1926. Depuis, il a reconstitué, avec les pierres d'origine, un ensemble de monuments qui ont rendu sa splendeur a l'architecture de son génial concepteur, Imhotep, qui les érigea vers 2 700 avant J-C. Cet ouvrage fait revivre, grâce aux photographies prises par Lauer en Egypte depuis 1926, les paysages autant que les souvenirs de Jean-Philippe et de son épouse Mimi, un couple dont l'histoire restera à jamais liée ci l'histoire de Sakkara.

The book opens with the creation of the Convenae by Pompey the Great in the first century B. C. And runs down to the great Frankish siege in A. D. 585 and its aftermath.
