‎Gunpowder and Firearms in the Mamluk Kingdom : a challenge to a medieval Society‎

‎London England: Frank Cass and Co Limited 1978. The introduction of firearms into the Muslim world is a subject which few scholars have ventured to scrutinise in detail. In this work therefore Professor Ayalon has sought to fill this gap on the basis of material supplied by chroniclers of the Mamluk Kingdom. Having established the first certain date when the Mamluks used gunpowder the author devotes some attention to fixing the meaning of technical terms. The main part of the work however is dedicated to the fascinating study of the human aspect of the problem: how the highly organized and stylised world of Mamluk chivalry displayed a bitter resentment towards the new weapon which it so rightly saw as a threat to its whole way of life. Not only is this study an important contribution to the highly specialised field with which it deals but for the less specialized historian the analysis of the role which firearms play in establishing the destiny of the Middle East is full of interest. For the general reader too conscious of the unhappiness which the new and terrible weapons of our own time have sown among professional soldiers the world over there are numerous fascinating parallels in the story which Dr. Ayalon unfolds. 154pp inc index etc. A LOVELY COPY FINE MEANS FINE! ‎Georgia in Antiquity : A History of Colchis and Transcaucasian Iberia, 550 BC-AD 562‎

‎Hardcover, 359 pages, ENG, 240 x 160 x 27 mm, dustjacket, in perfect condition, with illustrations in b/w. ISBN 9780198144731. The first full history of ancient Georgia ever to be written outside Georgia itself, this book also serves as a valuable introduction to the substantial archaeological work that has been carried out there in recent decades. Designed to open up ancient Georgia for the world of scholarship at large, it is not only a history of a neglected region, but also a sustained attempt to inform topics and issues that are more familiar to the historians of antiquity. Examples include myths of the periphery; Caucasian mountains and their passes; Greek colonization; the Persian, Athenian, and Selecuid empires; Pompey's conquest of Mithridates' empire; the development of the Roman frontier in the eastern Black Sea region; Roman diplomacy in Iberia; the Christianization of Iberia; Sassanian ambitions in Transcaucasia; and Byzantine warfare there.‎

‎Roman archaeology in a South Anatolian landscape: The Via Sebaste, the Mansio in the Döseme Bogazi, and regional transhumance in Pamphylia and Pisidia. (Akmed Series in Mediterranean Studies 4 (ASMS)).‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 195 p., color and b/w plates. Roman archaeology in a South Anatolian landscape: The Via Sebaste, the Mansio in the Döseme Bogazi, and regional transhumance in Pamphylia and Pisidia. An investigation of a Roman road-station in its archaeological and geographical context that provides a new perspective on the historical landscape of southern Anatolia. This study is based on fieldwork carried out during the 1990s in southwest Turkey in the modern vilayets of Burdur and Antalya, and it focuses on the settlements associated with a Roman mansio located in the Döseme Bogazi, the pass that linked Pisidia with the coastal region of Pamphylia. The course of the road and the structures that emerged along it were defined not by the evolution of Pisidia's Hellenized indigenous culture but by the priorities of Roman rule, especially during late antiquity. Furthermore, the study of the road where the mansio was located raises fundamental questions about the role played by this mountain pass in the movement of people and animals between the lowlands and highlands of South-west Anatolia.‎

‎Twenty Years in Tibet [Hardcover]‎

‎Born of a Scottish father and mother of a Sikkimese descent, the author spent the early years of his life in Darjeeling and had his schooling there in the course of which he ultimately mastered Tibetan, Bengali, Bhutanese, Sikkimese, Lepcha, Hindi and Nepali. He joined the Vaccination Deptt. under the Govt. of Bengal and his duties entailed his making regular tours of the villages in the Darjeeling Distt. The 12 years that the author thus spent gave him a comprehensive insight into the manners and customs, and everyday lives, of the peasantry of this part in the Himalayas. In 1904 Col. Waddek took him as his assistant in collecting for the Govt. of India the largest and most complete collection of Tibetan sacred and lay books ever brought to India or Europe. This was during the Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa. From 1905 to 1925 the author was appointed the British Trade Agent in Tibet. The work of the author covers a period of unusual activity and special interest on the North-East Frontier of India. It includes Col. Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa in 1904, the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1910, his return to Lhasa in 1912, and many other incidents of lesser importance. It has been out-of-print for a long time now and we have therefore reprinted it in a limited edition for the benefit of the scholars of Tibetan studies. About The Author:- David Macdonald is an eminent author and is well-conversant with Tibetan language and customs. Having spent two decades in Tibet as British Trade Agent from 1905 to 1925, he gained the expertise of several languages, viz., Bhutanese, Sikkimese Bengali, Lepcha, Nepali and Hindi. He was responsible for a massive collection of Tibetan sacred books which now enrich the collections of the British and Indian museum libraries. A witness to historic Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa, flight of the Dalai Lama in 1910 and his restoration after two years, Macdonald had academic links, with Sikkim Gazetteer, the Linguistic Survey of India and Tibetan Translation of the New Testament. ‎Courtesans and Fishcakes : The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens‎

‎The luxury of the ancient world is legendary, but the Athenian reputation is sober because this wealthy, successful city-state spent all its money on the conspicuous consumption of ephemeral things. Their consuming passions for food, wine and sex drove their society, as well as generating the rich web of privilege, transgression, guilt and taboo for which they are remembered today. Using pamphlets, comic satires, forensic speeches - from authors as illustrious as Plato and as ignored as Philaenis - as source material - this study combines a traditional classicist's rigour with an appreciation of the new analytical techniques pioneered in gender and cultural studies to provide an alternative view of ancient Athenian culture and to bring its reality into a focus easier on the modern eye. A fascinating investigation of how ancient Athenians looked at food and women and sex..372p. plates. bibliography.index. Book‎
