‎MORGENS TROLLE LARSEN.‎

‎Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xvi], 585 p. Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations. The edition is only the first part out of five that deal with the family archive of Salim-Assur, and includes only 295 out of 1100 texts from the archive. Half of these texts are duplicates and envelopes, so that the actual amount of unique documents is somewhat smaller. Larsen has divided the texts into differ-ent dossiers with distinctive subjects that deal with the archives of Issu-arik and his two sons Iddin-Abum and Salim-Assur until their death. The volume ends with quarrels about the inheritance of Salim-Assur, with his son Ennum-Assur taking the initiative. We know Ennum-Assur also from out-side the Kt 94/k archive, as he is mentioned with patronymic by Buzazu son of Pusuken in a letter to Puzur-Assur son of Isar-kitti-Assur (CTMMA 1 71:5). Another interesting link with the Pusuken archive can be found in TC 3 36, where Pusuken is in the process buying the house of a son of Issu-arik. Larsen suggested that the most probable candidate for this son was Assur-bel-awatim. The family of Salim-Assur is well established, with Larsen discussing the major figures briefly and providing a family tree. The texts in the archive date from the time of Issu-arik (KEL 40/1-85) to the death of Salim-Assur (KEL 103/4) and the quarrelers following his disappearance that ended with the murder of Ennum-Assur (KEL 105/6). The texts are divided not according to the archeological number of the texts; rather all documents are sorted to subject in different dossiers. The content of these dossiers is further-more discussed in the introduction. This favorable method cannot prevent some chronological overlay between the dif-ferent dossiers, though this is solved by references in the commentary of the texts. The archive features two rather large dossiers on the death of the two brothers Iddin-abum (48 texts) and Salim-Assur (88 texts). Both dossiers were also discussed by Hertel; in his unpublished Copenhagen dissertation (2007: first dossier p. 438ff., second dossier p. 303ff.); an updated version has appeared since (Hertel & Larsen 2010). Iddin-abum had appointed his brother as successor at his deathbed. Salim-Assur seems to have chosen Ennam-Assur in his will, though in his case problems would arise, as an alternate testament seems to have existed. Testaments are relatively rare in the Old Assyrian text corpus, though they are frequently referred to in the texts. In AKT 6a they are mentioned, but not found, as they were kept in Assur. What we do have tells us more on arrangements made before the death of a trader. Though it seems to be standard for the Assyrians to have a testament composed, no heir in business was appointed in the found examples. It appears that this had something to do with the minor status of the traders who drew up the known testaments; we know from other refer-ences that a successor could be appointed. This new family leader was either a brother or son. (Source: BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS LXIX N° 5-6, september-december 2012). ‎BURIAL AND ANCIENT SOCIETY The Rise of the Greek City-State‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Sticker remnant to back wrap. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 262 pages; This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and the relevant historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society.‎

DJ spine is sunned and discolored. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 262 pages; This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. ‎DEATH-RITUAL AND SOCIAL STRUCTURE IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY‎

‎Very faint creasing to wraps. ; In this innovative book Dr Morris seeks to show the many ways in which the excavated remains of burials can and should be a major source of evidence for social historians of the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Burials have a far wider geographical and social range than the surviving literary texts, which were mainly written for a small elite. They provide us with unique insights into how Greeks and Romans constituted and interpreted their own communities. In particular, burials enable the historian to study social change. Ian Morris illustrates the great potential of the material in these respects with examples drawn from societies as diverse in time, space and political context as archaic Rhodes, classical Athens, early imperial Rome and the last days of the western Roman empire.1. The anthropology of a dead world, 2. 'Mos Romanus': cremation and inhumation in the Roman empire, 3. 'Dem bones': skeletal remains, 4. Taking it with you: grave-goods and Athenian democracy, 5. Monuments to the dead: display and wealth in classical Greece, 6. Famous last words: the inscribed tombstone, 7. At the bottom of the graves: an example of analysis, ; Key Themes in Ancient History‎

‎CLASSICAL GREECE Ancient Histories and Modern Archaeologies‎

‎A bit of hard creasing to wraps. ; New Directions in Archaeology; 258 pages; The archaeology of classical Greece developed in the shadow of Greek historical scholarship. Many modern developments in archaeology have been neglected, and classical archaeology has become something of a backwater. The contributors to this book review the history of the field and aim to demonstrate that modern archaeological approaches can contribute to a richer understanding of Greek society. They insist that this complex, literate and highly unusual society poses important questions for archaeologists of other regions.‎

This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. ‎THE ATHENIAN TRIREME The History and Reconstruction of an Ancient Greek Warship‎

‎DJ Spine is sunned. Very light shelfwear to book. ; 1.11 x 8.57 x 6.16 Inches; 348 pages; Shortly before the launch of the reconstructed Greek warship, Olympias, the first edition of The Athenian Trireme was published, providing historical and technical background to the reconstruction of the ship. Since then, five seasons of experimental trials have been conducted on the ship under oar and sail, and the lessons learned have been supplemented by new archaeological discoveries and by historical, scientific and physiological research over the past fifteen years. For this second edition, the text has been recast and a number of substantive changes have been made. In addition, there is an entirely new chapter that describes the trials of Olympias in detail, reports the performance figures, and outlines the changes desirable in any second reconstruction. There are nineteen new illustrations, including eleven photographs of Olympias at sea demonstrating features of the design that could be represented only by drawings in the first edition.‎
