His purpose was to record on film as completely and exactly as possible the art and architecture of the ancient Maya ceremonial centers. He made over 500 black-and-white photographs and 200 color transparencies at the following sites: Kaminaljuyu Dzibilchaltun Copan Tikal Palenque Comalcalco Uxmal Sayil Kabah Labna Xlampak Chichen-Itza Mayapan Tulum and Iximche. The exhibition was originally presented in March 1970 at the University Gallery of the University of Florida and then toured various museum and art centers in the Untied States and Guatemala. Wishing to disseminate this knowledge more widely than was possible in a series of museum exhibitions Craven selected representative photographs including some from each of the sites named above for publication in this book. The book itself in fact contributes importantly to the areas of Latin American studies and of pre-Columbian art and architecture. The photographs themselves give a clearer perspective of the Maya civilization and achievement than has been presented in earlier attempts to picture them. As an introduction the the book Craven chose a lecture by the late William R Bullard Jr The Collapse of the Maya Civilization delivered in 1971to a seminar on pre-Columbian art history at the University of Florida. Errata. � The rare first edition of Kant's seminal "Critique of Judgment" the third and last of his critiques which taken together arguably constitute the most important contribution to philosophy since Aristotle and Plato. Kant's influence on modern philosophy is primarily due to his critical works and with them he gives to philosophy a new and comprehensive way of dealing systematically with the problems of philosophy. <br><br>In the "Critique of Judgment" Kant develops philosophical aesthetics and teleology that comprises nature and art. This aesthetics fulfills an essential systematic function in the Kantian architectonic. It bridges the gap between reason and nature thus serving as a complement to practical reason of which Kant had proposed a critique two years earlier.<br><br>The third critique is essential to an understanding of Kant's project of a critical philosophy. It is here that he seeks to join the dimensions of human experience which he had laid bare in the two previous critiques. A number of the conceptual foundations he had laid from 1782 break down as he tries to demonstrate that aesthetics mediates between the realm of sensibility and that of reason.<br><br>In order to do so he sets out to show that aesthetic intuition ranges over both realms. The key to this demonstration is the claim that the two realms are isomorphic. However as Kant considers the aesthetic judgment of the products of man's artistic invention he cannot fit them into the format of a teleology of nature. Instead he develops a conceptual framework for aesthetic judgment which explains why the first section on the faculty of aesthetic judgment swelled to the point of dwarfing the section on the teleology of nature.<br><br>In the third critique the tension which inhere in the project of a critical philosophy rises to the surface. The third critique thus provides us with an invaluable glimpse into the actual workings of the mental faculties that Kant attempted to chart in his philosophy. For this very reason the third critique provided the point of departure for much of later idealist philosophy especially that of Hegel whose speculative philosophy can be seen as an articulation of the topics which Kant had uncovered in the third critique. <br><br>Warda: 125. unknown

ABOUT THE BOOK:- In her continuing quest, re-affirming the vision of India as an organic whole, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan approaches the arts of Kerala both in their distinctive qualities and holistic dimension, which ideally represent the dynamics of Indian cultural processes. This monograph, based on the inaugural Parikshit Memorial Lecture delivered by Dr. Vatsyayan at the Government Sanskrit College, Tripunithura in August 1988, now reprinted, has been commended by many as remarkably rich in the variety of art forms it covers and the directions for future research it offers in the area. She revisits these art forms, often termed as “little” and “great” traditions, and shows how performing art forms, like Kathakali and Krishnanattam, serve as a bridge between them. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan is a renowned art historian and a leading scholar and authority on classical Indian dance, art and culture. For over half a century, she has worked tirelessly to enhance the understanding and appreciation of India's cultural heritage. She has been Secretary, Government of India, Member, UNESCO Executive Board, Member of Rajya Sabha and President, India International Centre. As adviser, administrator and policy maker in the Government of India for fifty years, she initiated many schemes and has been responsible for spearheading policy framework for programmes of art history, education, cultural awareness and Sanskrit, Buddhist and Pali Studies. Today recognized as one of the most important institution-builders in the country, she has been responsible for the establishment of many educational and cultural institutions such as: The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath (now deemed University – Central University for Tibetan Studies); Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, New Delhi; School of Buddhist Studies, Leh, and many others. She is the conceiver and founder Academic Director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi. She has authored about 20 publications, each of which has broken new ground at the theoretical level, including Classical Indian Dance in Literature and the Arts and The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts. Some of the plates are heavily annotated in pen with translations to the Demotic texts and with many cross-references. Unique copy, extensively used, allowing a rare insight into the thought process of this great scholar.
