Pourtant, au cours des siècles et des millénaires précédents, les hommes ayant fréquenté les lieux ou vécu sur ce territoire y ont laissé beaucoup de traces. Ce sont les archives du sol. Au terme de dix ans de prospections archéologiques individuelles et collectives, cet ouvrage peut faire le point de nombreuses découvertes de tous les temps. Car toutes les époques de l’histoire et de la préhistoire sont rassemblées sur les 5 958 ha de cette grande commune. Depuis environ cent mille ans, les tailleurs de silex des temps préhistoriques (du moustérien, du paléolithique supérieur et du mésolithique) qui vivaient de chasse, de pêche et de cueillette, ont campé sur ces lieux. Les premiers cultivateurs du néolithique ont défriché les terres légères du sud de la commune. Les hommes de l’âge du bronze ont aussi laissé quelques traces. Puis, les Gaulois et les Gallo-romains dont on peut localiser quelques-uns de leurs habitats et retrouver leur activité agricole et métallurgique. Le Moyen Age est également riche de découvertes, depuis une ferme franque, un donjon, trois mottes féodales et de nombreux sites défensifs. De nombreuses prospections en surface, dans les bois ou dans les labours, ont permis de repérer les outils de la vie quotidienne des hommes de ces temps obscurs, de découvrir des traces d’habitats, d’enclos, de lieux fortifiés. Les formes des parcellaires agraires, le tracé des vieux chemins, ajoutent à la découverte d’un territoire façonné par les hommes au cours des siècles, jusqu’aux grands défrichements du Moyen Age. Un territoire qui, depuis lors, n’avait guère changé jusqu’aux années 1950. Guy Puaud est né à la Chevraise, hameau de Saint-Sauvant (Vienne) en 1932. Bûcheron et scieur jusqu’à vingt-neuf ans, puis journaliste s’intéressant au monde rural pendant trente ans. Depuis vingt-cinq ans, il effectue des recherches d’histoire locale sur son pays natal. Il a publié Sous l’orage des dragonnades, sur les conversions forcées et momentanées des protestants sous Louis XIV, Les noms de terroirs ou la mémoire des lieux, un essai sur les mille six cents lieux identifiés de cette commune, leur origine, ce qu’ils expriment de l’histoire des hommes.
