‎This volume presents 569 objects of baked clay from three sites in the Amuq Plain (southern Turkey). They were excavated in the 1930ies by a team from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, directed by Robert J. Braidwood. Most of them were never published before. Their dates range from the late 3rd millennium BC until the Hellenistic period. The terra-cottas are presented in a catalogue, but also set in a frame of their cultural and artistic background. This book is thus not only a publication of material from the Amuq excavations, but also a history of 2nd and 1st millennium terra-cotta production in ancient Syria. The study of these figurines highlights the extent and limitations of iconographic influences from abroad and proves the continuity of images and beliefs across the borders of cultural periods.‎

‎Jordan is exceptionally rich in churches for the most part dating after the 5th century, many being in the large cities but sometimes also in towns of lesser importance. The walls, but above all the pavements, with their rich mosaic decor, are often well conserved when protected by a covering of sand or earth. Over the last twenty years, an interest has also developed for the evolution of liturgical rites and therefore for the material installations which reveal their trace in places of worship. This book is divided into two parts. A continuous account examines successively the ecclesiastical organisation of the territory in the period under consideration, the repartition of the churches in the cities and in the countryside, the different types of plans and the resulting technical specificities (wood roofing, vaulted apses, and eventually domes), the mode of floor decoration in function of the plans, and sometimes the wall decoration, and also the liturgical furnishings (altar, ambo, seats) and installations (chancel, precincts, reliquaries) which are associated. Numerous synoptic tables and typological plates allow a rapid glance at the particularities provided by archaeology which, given the scarcity of literary sources, is essential for the history of the Churches in the provinces which correspond with Jordan at the present time, the hagiography in the region, the economic and social history, and the evolution in the liturgy. The inventory, interrupted in 1998, includes a normalised analysis of the architecture and liturgical furnishings of about 180 monuments. It reproduces and translates the numerous inscriptions (in general on mosaics) which allow quite precise dating of the churches between the 6th and the 8th centuries, sometimes the names of the titular saints and the circumstances of their construction or their decoration. ‎Royal stelae are one of the most important sources for reconstructing the history of pharaonic Egypt. They document a variety of royal actions: military campaigns; construction work in temples; donations of statues and barques to temples; gifts of cult instruments and other offerings. During the 18th Dynasty they play an increasingly significant role in the demonstration of royal power. Hitherto, a strictly historical approach has determined how these monuments are viewed by scholars and a fresh approach is now needed, asking such questions as: for what purpose was a stela erected? where? by whom? and what was the nature of its visual appearance? Such an investigation has to be based on the premise that royal stelae are official monuments which reflect how pharaoh wished to present himself. The stelae combine picture and text in one monument which also draws its meaning from the architectural context in which it stands. An important question is to determine the target group for whom the stelae were intended. Some were clearly intended to be read by or declaimed to a large audience while others were addressed primarily to the gods. This book is intended to serve as a source book and the main part consists of the documentation of each stela followed by an analysis of the totality of the stelae. The study includes unknown or poorly published monuments and offers new readings and observations based on an examination of the original monuments. Beside the most familiar "historical" stelae, the book also deals with a group of small stelae which have been of peripheral interest until now because of their short or even missing texts. The book pulls all the information together in trying to establish the evolution, meaning and function of royal stelae in the 18th Dynasty before the Aton religion took over. The study demonstrates that the stelae were embedded in the king's ritual activity. Languages : German.‎

On releve egalement l'analyse des portraits de Louis de Quarre et Barbe de Cruysinck et du Triptyque de la Vierge et l'Enfant, deux oeuvres appartenant au groupe du Maitre au feuillage en broderie, un artiste enigmatique dont la personnalite a ete recemment mise en relief par une exposition dans ce meme musee. AD 75 and occupied continuously until the early 120s. The fort was then reduced and was reoccupied from c. 270 until the early fourth century. Excavation was concentrated on the defences and part of the interior. Detailed examination of the defences enabled useful analysis of construction methods. In the interior of the Flavio-Trajanic fort, a sequence of granaries was followed by a series of praetoria. Analysis of these buildings has enabled a reconsideration of the form and function of Commander's houses in auxiliary forts. This volume includes full reports on the finds which included coins, lamps, glass and intaglios.‎

At the same time, the doctrine noted that the U.S. would recognize and not interfere with existing European colonies nor meddle in the internal concerns of European countries.
