India and Jambu Island: Showing Changes in Boundaries and River-Courses of India and Burma From Pauranic, Greek, Buddhist, Chinese and Western Travellers Accounts [Hardcover]
In Olden times, both India and Jambu dvipa were sacred islands and their sacredness is accepted in Brahamnic, Buddhist and Jain religious literatures. In ancient times, India was not the same topographically as she stands now. In this study, The Author has made a laudable attempt to trace the History of such topographical changes which have taken place since A Few centuries prior to the Christian era. The author has arrived at starting conclusions about ancient Geography of India. He claims to have been able to ascertain the ancient coast line of peninsular India, correct identification of the Taprobane island (Tampraparni), the old courses of the rivers like Ganga, Sindhu, Brahmaputra, Narmada, etc., the locations of the scenes of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, and the areas of Gautama Buddha's birth and travels. It is true that all the conclusions arrived at by The Author may not be acceptable to present day scholarship, nor all his arguments and interpretations are convincing, but the new lights thrown on ancient India and South East Asia and the material compiled by the author are of immense value to future research. Contents:- Preface Introduction Chapter 1. Taprobane Island of Ptolemy is the Peninsular portion of India, subsequently joined to Mainland 2. Confirmation of the Southern Coast-line of India by Periplus of the Erythrean Sea 3. Taprobane Island and Southern Coast of India as described by Other Greek Writers 4. Courses of Rivers falling into the Sea on the Southern Coast of India as given by Ptolemy, and Identification of Towns near them, affording a further Confirmation of the Coast-line as traced before 5. Reclamation of the Sea, between Taprobane Island and Sub-Vindhya Mainland of India, and round Taprobane, with Consequent Changes in River Courses 6. Western Boundary of Ptolemy’s India, and Rivers falling into the Western Sea, the Indus in Particular 7. Eastern Boundary of Ptolemy’s Intra-Gangem India, and Rivers falling into the Gangetikus Sinus 8. The Ganges of Ptolemy 9. Major Changes in the Course of the Ganges 10. Intra-Gangem India or Bharatvarsa as described in Ancient Literature; Subsequent Changes 11. Extra-Gragem India of Ptolemy and Jambu-dvipa of Puranas 12. General Observations regarding The Changes in India and Burmah, touching briefly on Mahabharata and Ramayana Areas, and Flow of Aryan Colonisation List of Books consulted The Title 'India and Jambu Island: Showing Changes in Boundaries and River-Courses of India and Burma From Pauranic, Greek, Buddhist, Chinese and Western Travellers Accounts written/authored/edited by Amarnath Das', published in the year 1986.
