Barletta, Barbara A
THE ORIGINS OF THE GREEK ARCHITECTURAL ORDERS
Cambridge University Press. 2001. Hardcover. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. Includes memorial guide for Barletta tipped in. Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Else book is fine.; Much of our understanding of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural order is based on the writings of ancient authors such as Virtruvius and those of modern interpreters. Traditionally the archaeological evidence has been viewed secondarily and often made to fit within a literary context despite contradictions that occur. Barbara Barletta's study examines both forms of evidence in an effort to reconcile the two sources as well as to offer a coherent reconstruction of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural orders. Beginning with the pre-canonical material she demonstrates that the relatively late emergence of the Doric and Ionic orders arose from contributions of separate regions of the Greek world rather than a single center. Barletta's reinterpretations of the evidence also assigns greater importance to the often overlooked contributions of Western Greece and the Cycladic Islands.; 11.3 X 6.9 X 0.8 inches; 232 pages . 0521792452 . ILLUSTRATIONS OF OLD TESTAMENT HISTORY
Wraps a little rubbed. Light shelfwear. ; 91pp, illustrated. Thanks to a great tradition of study and research, we are in this country extremely fortunate to have been able to assemble over the years, and thereby preserve in the British Museum a remarkable number of items from various sources throwing a direct light on the historical events mirrored in the pages of the Hebrew Bible. They are, of course, only a portion of all the material of this kind which exists, much being found in museums in other countries, which the student of the subject will find described elsewhere. In this book we attempt to relate the selection of material more or less to particular historical events. The relation has not been absolutely strict. Such matters of selection are inevitably difficult, and in the last resort, depend on professional preferences. [From the Foreword]; 91 pages
