‎ANCIENT ANATOLIA Aspects of Change and Cultural Development. Essays in Honor of Machteld J. Mellink‎

‎Xvii, 120pp, nicely illustrated. Machteld Mellink's colleagues have produced an appreciation of her interests and scholarly contributions. The book updates the last 20 years of archaeological research into the cultures of Anatolia as well as others of ancient western Asia. America's most distinguished archaeologist of Asia Minor is honored with essays on incipient agriculture (L. S. And R. J. Braidwood's critical survey of current attitudes) ; the physical health of Early Bronze Age populations (J. L. Angel and S. C. Bisel) ; imports found at late third millennium BCE K; ultepe (T. ; Ozg; u; ) ; three articles on seal iconography of various periods (N. ; Ozg; u; , E. Porada, E. Uzunoglu with A. M. And B. Din; ol) ; the child in Hittite iconography (J. V. Canby) ; the Grinnell College (Iowa) Anatolian collection (H. G. Guterbock) ; the literary topos ``prosperity,' ' expressed as ``royal statements of ideal prices'' (J. D. Hawkins) ; Kizildag rock reliefs and other remains (K. Bittel) ; polydactyly and sirens (R. D. Barnett). Several articles may be beyond the grasp of advanced undergraduates, but the descriptive passages of other essays can be easily followed because illustrations are set in the text. ‎THE KNOSSOS LABYRINTH A New View of the `Palace of Minos' At Knossos‎

‎Foxing to top of textblock. Minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Knossos, like the Acropolis or Stonehenge, is a symbol for an entire culture. The Knossos Labyrinth was first built in the reign of a Middle Kingdom Egyptian pharaoh, and was from the start the focus of a glittering and exotic culture. Homer left elusive clues about the Knossian court and when the lost site of Knossos gradually re-emerged from obscurity in the nineteenth century, the first excavators - Minos Kalokairinos, Heinrich Schliemann, and Arthur Evans - were predisposed to see the site through the eyes of the classical authors. Rodney Castleden argues that this line of thought was a false trail and gives an alternative insight into the labyrinth which is every bit as exciting as the traditional explanations, and one which he believes is much closer to the truth. Rejecting Evans' view of Knossos as a bronze age royal palace, Castleden puts forward alternative interpretations - that the building was a necropolis or a temple - and argues that the temple interpretation is the most satisfactory in the light of modern archaeological knowledge about Minoan Crete. ; 9.3 X 6.4 X 0.8 inches; 230 pages‎

‎PETRA‎

‎2 tears to DJ (1 repaired with tape). Light foxing to top of textblock. ; "If ever a dead city held romance it is Petra. . . . Hewn out of ruddy rock in the midst of a mountain wilderness, sumptuous in ornament and savage in environs, poised in wildness like a great carved opal glowing in a desert, this lost caravan city staggers the most experienced traveller." So wrote Rose Macaulay in her Pleasure of Ruins (1953) , echoing the sentiments of generations of travelers before and since. Reached through a narrow, winding crevasse between looming cliffs in south Jordan, Petra served as the capital city of the Nabatean Arabs from the third century B. C. E to 106 C. E. (when it was occupied by the Roman emperor Trajan). In this lavishly illustrated book, Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo and Eugenia Equini Schneider provide an accessible overview of the history and culture of the Nabateans, including their language, religion, politics, and economy, as well as a detailed guide to the city of Petra and its art and architecture. A major stop on the spice trade route, Petra attracted wealth and culture from across the Arabic and classical worlds and was abundantly furnished with more than 800 monuments. Perhaps the most well known of these is the Khazneh el-Faroun, or Treasury, a royal tomb more than 130 feet high with a magnificent Hellenistic facade carved from the salmon pink sandstone of the surrounding cliffs. But no less impressive were Petra's advanced achievements in hydraulic engineering, including elaborate water conservation systems and dams. For anyone who has felt the lure and wonder of ancient cities and civilizations in exotic locations, Petra will be a delightful and invaluable resource. ; 11.3 X 10.1 X 0.9 inches; 204 pages‎
