‎THE PRIEST, THE PRINCE, AND THE PASHA The Life and Afterlife of an Ancient Egyptian Sculpture‎

‎Lower corners bumped. Minor shelfwear . ; Sometime in the early fourth century BC, an unknown Egyptian master carved an exquisite portrait in dark-green stone. The statue that included this head of a priest, likely a citizen of ancient Memphis, may have been damaged when the Persians conquered Egypt in 343 BC, before it was buried in a temple complex. Its adventures were not over: after almost two millennia, the head was excavated by Auguste Mariette, a founding figure in French archaeology. Sent to France as part of a collection assembled for the inimitable Bonaparte prince known as Plon-Plon, it found a home in his faux Pompeian palace. After disappearing again, it resurfaced in the collection of American aesthete Edward Perry Warren, who donated it to the MFA, Boston. Along the way, this compelling, mysterious sculpture has reflected the evolving understanding of Egyptian art. ; 8.4 X 6.1 X 0.9 inches; 208 pages‎

‎ART AND IDENTITY IN DARK AGE GREECE, 1100–700 BC‎

‎This book explores how art and material culture were used to construct age, gender, and social identity in the Greek Early Iron Age, 1100–700 BC. Coming between the collapse of the Bronze Age palaces and the creation of Archaic city-states, these four centuries witnessed fundamental cultural developments and political realignments. While previous archaeological research has emphasized class-based aspects of change, this study offers a more comprehensive view of early Greece by recognizing the place of children and women in a warrior-focused society. Combining iconographic analysis, gender theory, mortuary analysis, typological study, and object biography, Susan Langdon explores how early figural art was used to mediate critical stages in the life-course of men and women. She shows how an understanding of the artistic and material contexts of social change clarifies the emergence of distinctive gender and class asymmetries that laid the basis for classical Greek society. ; 10.0 X 7.0 X 1.3 inches; 406 pages‎

‎THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS‎

‎Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin). Minor creasing lower corner of DJ. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery, the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages‎

‎LOOKING AT GREEK VASES‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin). ; This is a collection of essays by distinguished scholars that will introduce the student or museum-goer to the study of Greek vases. Although the book is roughly chronological in arrangement--beginning with the appearance of human figures on Geometric vases, and ending with their virtual disappearance from Hellenistic pottery--it is not a history of Greek vase painting, or a handbook. It offers instead a series of suggestions on how to read the often complex images presented by Greek vases, and also explains how the vases were made and distributed. The volume is fully illustrated throughout. ; 300 pages‎

The book pays particular attention to the early period, supplying a large-scale account of the development of pre-Hellenic building. Then the evolution of temples and other religious buildings is traced. ‎EXPLORATION ARCHÉOLOGIQUE DE DÉLOS XLII [2 VOLUME SET] Le Théâtre. Volume I. Text; Volume II: Planches‎

‎Minor creasing to wraps. ; 2 vol. (XXI-282 p. , 112 pp of pl. XLII‎

‎GLI EDIFICI PER SPETTACOLI NELL'ITALIA ROMANA [2 VOLUME SET] Vol. I: Catalogo E Saggi; Vol. II: Tavole‎

‎Minor shelfwear. ; 2 Volume Set; Vol. 1/2/2022; 11.7 X 8.3 X 3.0 inches; 1438 pages; Very heavy set. Overseas postage will be more.‎
