The statue that included this head of a priest, likely a citizen of ancient Memphis, may have been damaged when the Persians conquered Egypt in 343 BC, before it was buried in a temple complex. Its adventures were not over: after almost two millennia, the head was excavated by Auguste Mariette, a founding figure in French archaeology. Sent to France as part of a collection assembled for the inimitable Bonaparte prince known as Plon-Plon, it found a home in his faux Pompeian palace. After disappearing again, it resurfaced in the collection of American aesthete Edward Perry Warren, who donated it to the MFA, Boston. Minor creasing lower corner of DJ. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. In questo ambito è stato dato un ruolo paritetico sia alle strutture ludiche edificate in forma monumentale sia a quelle allestite temporaneamente in carpenteria, tutte presentate in successione cronologica. Ne emerge l’importanza particolare di Roma, dove le due tecniche edilizie coesistono fino ad età imperiale inoltrata e dove, per la ricchezza della tradizione storico-letteraria, è riconoscibile il nascere e il formarsi delle singole tipologie da una comune matrice lignea e la loro diversificazione correlata ai molteplici tipi di spettacoli: infatti la celebrazione dei ludi includeva di frequente, scaglionata in più giorni, l’intera gamma dei giuochi, dai circensi agli anfiteatrali (munera e venationes) , dagli scenici agli atletici e alle rarissime naumachie.
