This most useful work will be an invaluable help in many different ways to all students of early Near Eastern civilization for not only does it give a stratigraphical survey and an exhaustive account of all the material found but it attempts to allocate that material to its proper chronological setting and to correlate the evidence from one site with that from another and the cultures of the North with those of the South as far as it is possible to do so. The present book deserves the utmost praise for Dr. Perkins in what she modestly implies is a pioneer work has most ably carried out her purpose which was "to gather together the material now available to make some attempt to organize it chronologically with tentative equations of levels and to suggest what the cultural phases seem to comprise and how they seem to fit together" p. 195. She has assuredly succeeded in her aims and although we may not fully agree with all her deductions her conclusions as a whole are so carefully considered and her appraisals so judicious that what she has written will long remain the essential starting-point for future investigations in that field of research. Traditions of De-coo-dah and Antiquarian Researches: Comprising Extensive Explorations Surveys and Excavations
334 pages with plates figures and drawings. Octavo 8 3/4" x 6" bound in original publisher's green cloth with decorative and gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped pictorial ruled cover. First published in 1853.<br /><br />William Pidgeon ca. 1800 – ca. 1880 was an antiquarian and archaeologist most famous for his 1858 work Traditions of Dee-Coo-Dah and Antiquarian Researches a putative history about lost tribes of the Upper Mississippi and the mounds they left behind. This book was eventually revealed to be partly a hoax and partly embellishment of actual research. Combining elaborate sketches and maps of mound groups in Wisconsin Iowa Illinois and Minnesota Pidgeon claimed to have discovered an elaborate network of coded earthen symbols used by an ancient race that predated Native Americans; one of the last survivors of this putative race "Dee-Coo-Dah" was interviewed by Pidgeon. Eventually his work became popular in the late 19th century when there were numerous myths about pre-Indian mound builders and Pidgeon's book went through at least three printings making him a fortune. The famed archaeologist Theodore H. Lewis later revealed that Pidgeon had fabricated most of his research and distorted much of the rest of it mapping mounds where none existed and changing the arrangement of existing mound groups to suit his needs. First edition.<br /><br />The present paper is the attempt to gather together and so far as possible to analyze the available information on a form of architecture that is consider relatively rare in the region under consideration. The study is an outgrowth of work in connection with two round buildings at the ruins of Chichen Itza in Yucatan so that it will aid in the understanding of these structures as well as other buildings of a similar type.<br /><br />Vivian is a former Curator of Archaeology at the Arizona State Museum University of Arizona Tucson. He has carried out research in Chaco Canyon for more than forty years. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona.<br /><br />France Vinton Scholes 1897–1979 was an American scholar and historian noted for his research on the history of New Spain especially Spanish Yucatan and Southwestern United States. Much of his research was conducted in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville Spain where he was sent in 1935 by the Carnegie Institute of Washington DC as part of a larger study on the Yucatan which was led by Alfred Kidder. In 1940 the study on Yucatan lost financial support from the Carnegie Institute and much of the literature and research was transferred over to the Library of Congress of the United States in the city of Washington. He served for over sixty years in academia specializing in the field of historical research. He studied at Harvard University. He lectured at Radcliffe College; at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Colorado College. After working for the Carnegie Institute he taught at the University of New Mexico. Scholes published more than fifty publications on the history of New Mexico in the seventeenth century; Mayan and Mesoamerica society during the Spanish colonization and conquest of Mexico during the same period. Life and Death at Paloma the first in-depth treatment of burials from a preagricultural South American village analyzes the life of its people during a revolutionary time in prehistory: the transition from a hunting-gathering-fishing way of life to a more sedentary horticultural society. Drawing upon the data that he collected as part of the University of Missouri's excavations at Paloma Jeffrey Quilter gives us the first study of preceramic Peruvian life through his analysis of this site's graves and contents. His extensively illustrated book is also the first attempt to infer social organization from such data for this period circa 5000 to 2500 B.C. in Peru. In addition he presents the only available summary and discussion of the known preceramic interments from western South America. Coastal Peru is one of the few New World regions where the early development of complex societies can be studied.
