‎Izapa Relief Carving: Form Content Rules for Design and Role in Mesoamerican Art History and Archaeology‎

‎vii103 pages with figures tables and bibliography. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" bound in original publisher wrappers. Dumbarton Oaks Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archaeology Number 27. First edition. Izapa is a very large pre-Columbian archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Chiapas; it was occupied during the Late Formative period. The site is situated on the Izapa River a tributary of the Suchiate River near the base of the Tacaná volcano the sixth tallest mountain in Mexico. The settlement at Izapa extended over 1.4 miles making it the largest site in Chiapas. The site reached its apogee between 600 BCE and 100 CE; several archaeologists have theorized that Izapa may have been settled as early as 1500 BCE making it as old as the Olmec sites of San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán and La Venta. Izapa remained occupied through the Late Classic period. The period of Izapa's height is still unknown due to little material for carbon dating so the issue is still widely debated. Orser then deepens the portrait of the black tenant system with a careful reconstruction of Millwood's postbellum society on the basis of available documentation and on the material culture-settlement patterns housing personal possessions-uncoverred by the archaeological investigation as it relates to each of the plantations' major labor groups: landlord manager wage hand servant millwright and tenant farmer. ‎A Study of Olmec Sculptural Chronology‎

‎71 pages with tables figures diagrams and bibliography. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" issued in wrappers. Dumbarton Oaks Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archaeology number 23. First edition.

As the earliest known Mesoamerican art style Olmec art has been the subject of much study over the last three decades. Monumental sculpture is one of the most important facets of Olmec art and a number of authors have focused primarily on this aspect. Many studies have described adequately the principals stylistic features of Olmec monumental sculpture but have failed to organize the sculpture on the basis of formal similarities aside from the primary categories of altars stelae etc. Careful analysis of the formal qualities of the sculpture including modeling composition sculptural detail and body posture reveal similarities that cross-cut the categories now in use.

Condition:

Corners bumped spine rubbed lightly soiled sticker removed from spine else a very good copy. ‎The Slate Site: A Poverty Point Lapidary Industry in the Southern Yazoo Basin Mississippi‎

‎vi69 pages with maps figures and plates. Quarto 11" x 8 1/2" issued in wrappers. Archaeological Report number 7. First edition.

The Slate site is located within the neck of a large meander loop within the Stage 4 meander belt of the Mississippi River in Humphreys County Mississippi. Three components have been identified indicating occupation during the Poverty Point Baytown and Historic periods. Archaeological investigations at the site included controlled surface collections auger tests to depth of up to 3.8 meters and the excavation of a single test pit. The Poverty Point component is the result of special activities focused upon the production of lapidary items principally from slate but including other materials such as quartz crystals quartz bauxite and barrel-shaped beads effigies and miniatures. Other artifacts diagnostic of the Poverty Point culture included micro-tools and cores a consistent variety of projectile points and other chipped stone implements boat stones pendants perforated gorgets pitted stones and plummets. Baked clay Poverty Point objects have not been found at this site. The artifact assemblage and geomorphological data suggests an occupation relatively late in the Poverty Point period. The lack of data on the Poverty Point occupation within the Yazoo Basin renders interpretation somewhat speculative but the existence of a special activity site devoted to the production of non-utilitarian items from a variety of exotic materials may indicate a relatively complex form of sociopolitical organization with increasing autonomy and less reliance upon interaction with broader Poverty Point complex in the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Condition:

A near fine copy.
