Ceremonial Centers of the Maya
iv152 pages with diagrams photographs and bibliography. Quarto 11" x 9 1/4" bound in original blue cloth with white lettering to spine. Introduction by William R Bullard Jr. Photography by Roy C Craven Jr. First edition. In preparation for a major exhibition of photographs of Maya art and artifacts of Maya origin Roy C Craven Jr made three trips to Central America. His purpose was to record on film as completely and exactly as possible the art and architecture of the ancient Maya ceremonial centers. He made over 500 black-and-white photographs and 200 color transparencies at the following sites: Kaminaljuyu Dzibilchaltun Copan Tikal Palenque Comalcalco Uxmal Sayil Kabah Labna Xlampak Chichen-Itza Mayapan Tulum and Iximche. The exhibition was originally presented in March 1970 at the University Gallery of the University of Florida and then toured various museum and art centers in the Untied States and Guatemala. Wishing to disseminate this knowledge more widely than was possible in a series of museum exhibitions Craven selected representative photographs including some from each of the sites named above for publication in this book. The book itself in fact contributes importantly to the areas of Latin American studies and of pre-Columbian art and architecture. The photographs themselves give a clearer perspective of the Maya civilization and achievement than has been presented in earlier attempts to picture them. As an introduction the the book Craven chose a lecture by the late William R Bullard Jr The Collapse of the Maya Civilization delivered in 1971to a seminar on pre-Columbian art history at the University of Florida. The site descriptions were written by Michael E Kampen who along with Bullard was a technical adviser to the original exhibitionCondition:Jacket with some edge wear else a very good to fine copy in like jacket. The Lithic Artifacts of La Libertad Chiapas Mexico: An Economic Perspective
xx286 pages with frontispiece 96 figures 175 tables and appendixes. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Appendix by Fred W Nelson. Papers of the New World Archaeological Foundation number 52. First edition. The lithic artifacts presented in this report were excavated at La Libertad Chiapas Mexico in 1975-76 and first made available in 1977; a preliminary study of the obsidian was completed in 1978. As in any work of this extensive nature research was conducted and descriptions compiled over a number of years. In several cases collections were analyzed repeatedly in order to bring analysis more up to date. In 1978 the author analyzed the obsidian for an MA thesis and subsequent research made clear that technological analysis of the obsidian needed revision. One goal of the study has been to move beyond basic description and to show that data significant for resolving wider problems of economic and cultural evolution can be delivered from utilitarian stone artifacts. Condition: Previous owner's name on front end paper lightly soiled edge wear else a very good copy. Brigham Young University Press paperback

The Archaeology and Prehistory of Southern Alberta as Reflected by Ceramics
3 volumes: ix231pp; vi232-605 with bibliography; ix606-727pp with 28 tables 42 figures and 27 plates. Quarto 11" x 8 1/2" issued in brown wrappers with black lettering to cover and spine and pictorial pottery on covers. Archaeological Survey of Canada Paper 14. First edition.

In this study the pottery of southern Alberta has been divided into two major ceramic complexes labelled Saskatchewan Basin and Cluny Respectively and the former has been subdivided into Early and Late Variants. It is evident that the Saskatchewan Basin complex is present throughout the Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric periods but that the Cluny complex is limited to the Protohistoric only. The Saskatchewan Basin complex appears to have originated in the pottery of southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the east and has very little correspondence to materials in the Missouri Basin and Central Plains regions to the south. In contrast the Cluny complex is obviously derived from ceramic transitions centering in the Middle Missouri area by way of similar industries in southern Saskatchewan and possibly northern Montana.

Condition:

Edge wear corners bumped with creases. Cites Maya
194 pages with maps figures drawings plates some in color Folio 12 1/2" x 8 3/4" bound in original publisher's beige cloth with red lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. First edition limited to 1000 copies. Maya cities were the centers of population of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. They served the specialized roles of administration commerce manufacturing and religion that characterized ancient cities worldwide. Maya cities tended to be more dispersed than cities in other societies even within Mesoamerica as a result of adaptation to a lowland tropical environment that allowed food production amidst areas dedicated to other activities. They lacked the grid plans of the highland cities of central Mexico such as Teotihuacán and Tenochtitlan. Maya kings ruled their kingdoms from palaces that were situated within the center of their cities. Cities tended to be located in places that controlled trade routes or that could supply essential products. This allowed the elites that controlled trade to increase their wealth and status. Such cities were able to construct temples for public ceremonies thus attracting further inhabitants to the city. Those cities that had favourable conditions for food production combined with access to trade routes were likely to develop into the capital cities of early Maya states. Condition: Previous owner's name on front end paper corners gently bumped. DW spine ends and corners chipped closed edge tears else a very good copy in like jacket. Albert Guillot hardcover

At this time the researches were somewhat hampered by the lack of precedent as to method. Some progress was made but obviously and perforce much was left undone. Therefore when a nearby deep excavation in the Back Bay region was opened for the purpose of constructing a building for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company we seized the opportunity to continue the work. Here we have the pleasure presenting a considerable quantity of new data." Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 4 lbs 3 oz. Category: Archaeology; Geology; Books; Science & Technology. 134 pages with black and white and color plates fold out maps and tables indexes and bibliography. Quarto 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" issued in wrappers. Serie Investigaciones 16. Limited to 1000 copies. 1st edition. This study was conducted with the goal of characterizing a specific group of polychrome stuccoed ceramic shards from the Maquixco Bajo archaeological site at Teotihuacan Mexico. Teotihuacan is located northeast of Mexico City and dates to the Classic Period ca 150-750 A.D. Analysis included pigment identification stucco identification characterization of the ceramic surface preparation as well as further investigation into binders and the technology of application. The layered structure of the stucco decoration is described. Analytical techniques used included scanning electron microscopy SEM x-ray powder diffraction XRD Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR microchemical testing and polarized light microscopy. Results indicate that red and yellow pigments are primarily iron oxides blue and green pigments are mixtures of azurite and malachite with chrysocolla and most black pigments contain charcoal black. Ground layers are made up of calcite or clay as well as mixtures of the two materials. Calcite is proposed as a binder. Condition: Lightly soiled corners bumped light edge wear. A very good copy. Trujillo Herrada, Armando
Un Modelo Predictivo Arqueológico: el caso de la MinerÃa del Cobre Durante El Siglo XVI en la Región de Tierra Caliente Michoacán
155 pages with plates maps illustrators bibliography and index. Quarto 11" x 8 1/2" bound in original publisher's wrappers. First edition limited to 500 copies. In recent decades there has been much discussion among archaeologists about the transformative roles material objects play in human societies. Various scholars have focused attention on the ways that material culture is an integral part of social and economic systems through time with considerable discourse centered on the role of specialized crafting in ancient societies. In addition to the Relación de Michoacán 1539–1541 one of the best-known and most widely studied ethnohistorical documents in Michoacán is the Lienzo de Jicalán. This lienzo is a pictographic document used and elaborated upon in the second half of the sixteenth century as proof of the rights that the indigenous authorities of Jicalán believed they held over several mineral deposits copper sources and soil-based colorants in the Tierra Caliente Hotlands of Michoacán. Mesoamerican metallurgy appeared suddenly in the western region of Mexico by approximately AD 600. Condition: A Fine copy. El Colegio de Michoacan paperback

Matthew Wallrath
Excavations in the Tehuantepec Region Mexico
Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society 1967 173 pages with figures tables plates maps and appendix. Quarto 11 3/4" x 9 1/4" issued in wrappers. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society New Series volume 57 part 2. 1st edition. Wallrath has written a very large report on a very small dig - three stratigraphic pits a hearth and an oven were excavated. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec has been at least touched by many peoples and cultures and its complex archaeology remains very little known; Wallrath's is therefore a proportionately large contribution to our knowledge of it. The major aspect of interest to many in Wallrath's report will be his use of the Type-Variety Method. He has used the binomial scheme for naming his ceramic units and the results are so sequipedalian as to make it clear that this rather peripheral aspect of the method urgently needs revision. The figures of Tehuantepec many of them highly distinctive are the object of special study; a detailed classification is presented at length. This would have been strengthened by the inclusion of other available published and museum collections from Tehuantepec although it stands as a solid beginning even without them. American Anthropologist:70 1234 Condition: Spine and edges sunned corners bumped slight wear to edges else a very good copy. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Very Good. Quarto.
