CRETE IN TRANSITION; Pottery Styles and Island History in the Archaic and Classical Periods
American School of Classical Studies at Athens. 2010. Softcover. Fine. Hesperia Supplement No. 45; 380 pages; This work presents a classification system and absolute chronology for black-gloss wares from Crete establishing the first local and regional ceramic sequences during the period from 600 to 400 B.C. This new chronological foundation of datable pottery from excavated sites fills in the so-called 6th/5th-century gap and dispels the prevailing view that this was a period of decline in population and one of artistic and cultural impoverishment. The 6th century heralded important changes in Cretan society reflected in the reorganization of burial grounds new patterns of sanctuary dedication and the circulation of exotica among the elite. The study reveals unsuspected connections with mainland Greece especially Sparta and Athens. Historians and archaeologists will find the author's conclusions and their implications to be of considerable interest. . 0876615450 . American School of Classical Studies at Athens paperback

ROME IN THE PYRENEES; Lugdunum and the Convenae from the First Century B. C. to the Seventh Century A. D.
Routledge. 2008. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very light shelfwear else Fine.; Routledge Monographs in Classical Studies; 184 pages; Rome in the Pyrenees is a unique treatment in English of the archaeological and historical evidence for an important Roman town in Gaul Lugdunum in the French Pyrenees and for its surrounding people the Convenae. The book opens with the creation of the Convenae by Pompey the Great in the first century B. C. And runs down to the great Frankish siege in A. D. 585 and its aftermath. Now the town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Lugdunum is one of the best-known Roman towns in Gaul with a rich selection of monuments at the town itself and important remains in the countryside such as the classic villa at Montmaurin or the votive altars cinerary caskets and sarcophagi in the local marble. The book traces how the Convenae used their marble to help create their identity invisible before Pompey but amongst the richest and most distinctive in Gaul by the second century A. D. Drawing on his own excavations at Saint-Bertrand and the extensive earlier and recent work there Simon Esmonde Cleary combines a clear description of the buildings and monuments of Lugdunum and of its countryside with a discussion of what they can tell us about the impact of Rome on this remote corner of its empire. Contains a guide to the visible Roman remains of the area. . 0415426863 . Routledge hardcover

CRUSADER ARCHAEOLOGY; The Material Culture of the Latin East
Routledge. 1999. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Book has light bumping to corners and spine ends. Otherwise in Near Fine condition .; One of the most fascinating and intriguing aspects of historical research is the study of how invading societies adapt to a strange environment undergoing change themselves as well as influencing their new neighbours and surroundings. From the end of the eleventh century there were Christian states in the Levant which were hybrid societies resulting from the meeting of the very different cultures of the East and West. Although a wealth of literature has been written on the Crusading movement affording a clearer picture of what the Crusades entailed little has been written to illuminate Franish life in “the lands beyond the sea. ” Crusader Archeology draws together recently excavated material from Israel Cyprus Syria and Jordan to examine what life was life for the Crusaders in their new territory and how they were influenced by the local population. Chapters encompass Frankish urban and rural settlements including agriculture industry the differing architecture employed by the military the church public and private structures arts and crafts leisure pursuits death and burial customs and building techniques. This highly illustrated volume comprises a graphic portrayal of the period and makes fascinating reading for all those interested in the Middle Ages and particularly in the Crusaders.; 0.98 x 9.5 x 6.47 Inches; 267 pages . 0415173612 . STYLE AND SOCIETY IN DARK AGE GREECE ; The Changing Face of a Pre-literate Society 1100-700 BC
Cambridge University Press. 1991. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; In this innovative study James Whitley examines the relationship between the development of pot style and social changes in the Dark Age of Greece 1100-700 BC. He focuses on Athens where the Protogeometric and Geometric styles first appeared. He considers pot shape and painted decoration primarily in relation to the other relevant features - metal artefacts grave architecture funerary rites and the age and sex of the deceased - and also takes into account different contexts in which these shapes and decorations appear. A computer analysis of grave assemblages supports his view that pot style is an integral part of the collective representations of Early Athenian society. It is a lens through which we can focus on the changing social circumstances of Dark Age Greece. Dr Whitley's approach to the study of style challenges many of the assumptions which have underpinned more traditional studies of Early Greek art.; New Studies in Archaeology; 10.25 x 1 x 7.5 Inches; 245 pages . 0521373832 . Effros, Bonnie
MEROVINGIAN MORTUARY ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE MAKING OF THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES
University of California Press. 2003. Hardcover. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Clothing jewelry animal remains ceramics coins and weaponry are among the artifacts that have been discovered in graves in Gaul dating from the fifth to eighth century. Those who have unearthed them from the middle ages to the present have speculated widely on their meaning. This authoritative book makes a major contribution to the study of death and burial in late antique and early medieval society with its long overdue systematic discussion of this mortuary evidence. Tracing the history of Merovingian archaeology within its cultural and intellectual context for the first time Effros exposes biases and prejudices that have colored previous interpretations of these burial sites and assesses what contemporary archaeology can tell us about the Frankish kingdoms. Working at the intersection of history and archaeology and drawing from anthropology and art history Effros emphasizes in particular the effects of historical events and intellectual movements on French and German antiquarian and archaeological studies of these grave goods. Her discussion traces the evolution of concepts of nationhood race and culture and shows how these concepts helped shape an understanding of the past. Effros then turns to contemporary multidisciplinary methodologies and finds that we are still limited by the types of information that can be readily gleaned from physical and written sources of Merovingian graves. For example since material evidence found in the graves of elite families and particularly elite men is more plentiful and noteworthy mortuary goods do not speak as directly to the conditions in which women and the poor lived. The clarity and sophistication with which Effros discusses the methods and results of European archaeology is a compelling demonstration of the impact of nationalist ideologies on a single discipline and of the struggle toward the more pluralistic vision that has developed in the post-war years.; 1.05 x 9.24 x 6.38 Inches; 272 pages . 0520232445 . PHRYGIAN ROCK-CUT SHRINES; Structure Function and Cult Practice
Brill Academic Publishers. 2006. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Unwrapped in plastic.; Culture and History of the Ancient Near East; 11.25 x 1 x 8.5 Inches; 438 pages; This volume explores the Iron Age Phrygian rock-cut monuments in Anatolia and defines their role in religion. Among other features this book questions the traditional view of the Mother goddess Kybele being the only Phrygian deity. A detailed analysis based on the monuments provides new interpretations and aspects of Phrygian religion: the Mother goddess was not alone but rather accompanied by a Superior male god. For the first time all known Phrygian rock-cut monuments are brought together in the useful corpus with plenty of illustrations. It is a unique and significant contribution to the study of Phrygian religion and spatial conceptualization and is useful both for those interested in Anatolian culture and archaeology but also in fields such as classical religion and archaeology. . 9004152423 . Ernst Wasmuth. 2002. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Minor creasing along top of DJ. " . 3803001722 . Ernst Wasmuth hardcover
