Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) First and only edition of this rare book on the history of Egyptian kings (pharaohs) by an Ottoman statesman and one of the most famous painting collectors in history. Halil Serif was educated in France, where his studies have primarily been on the realm of political science. Following his return to Egypt, he became for a brief period the second secretary of Abbas Pasha, the governor (1848-1854), and a member of the Council of Justice (Ahkam-i Misriye). Thereafter, he became the Director of the Office of Translation and of the Bureau of Correspondence within the body of Egyptian foreign affairs administration for five years -approximately between 1850 and 1855. Said Pasha (1854-1863), the successor of Abbas as governor of Egypt, then appointed Halil Serif as the commissioner in charge of Egyptian exhibits sent to Paris for the international exposition of 1855. Also known for his own great painting collection, Halil Serif must have stayed in Paris for about a year. He was still there in February and March, 1856, when the Congress of Paris had met to institute peace after the Crimean War. The Ottoman Empire was represented at that Congress by its Grand Vizier, Mehmed Emin Ali Pasha. While Halil Bey was in St. Petersburg, an article on Egyptian history which he had written appeared in Mecmua-i Fünun (the journal of the newly founded Cemiyet-i Ilmiye-i Osmaniye), which began its publication in 1862. 'Kudema-i mülûk-i Misriye Tarihi' (History of the Ancient Egyptian Kings) was published serially in volumes of 1 and 2. Later on, the articles were published by Ebüzziya's press in the form of a book. These articles also brought Halil Bey to the notice of Europeans. First and only edition of this extremely rare first separate Roman history (as well as the Byzantine history) in the Ottoman/Turkish literature. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha had already dealt briefly in Roman and Byzantine history as part of an outline of ancient and medieval European history (Avrupa'nin Ahval-i Sabika ve Lahikasi): Tarih-i Cevdet (first edition) vol. 6 (Istanbul 1294 AH /1877). The Roman history until Constantine the Great is limited to the first ten pages of this account, the remainder deals with Byzantine history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, bureaucrat, administrator, historian, and a prominent figure during the Tanzimat reforms of the Ottoman Empire. He was the head of the Mecelle commission that codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the Westernization of law. He is often regarded as a pioneer in the codification of civil law based on the European legal system. The Mecelle remained intact in several modern Arab states in the early and mid-20th century. In addition to Turkish, he was proficient in Arabic, Persian, French, and Bulgarian languages. He wrote numerous books on history, law, grammar, linguistics, logic, and astronomy. "Masâlik al-absâr fi mamâlik al- amsâr" is an account of the Mohammedan kingdoms of the west, excluding Egypt, by Shihâb al-Dîn, who was descended from an old Arab family. The countries described in the book are Abyssinia, Kanem, Nubia, Mali, the Kingdom of the Berber mountains, Ifriqiya, Morocco, and Andalusia. This rare pamphlet includes North Africa (Maghreb) and Andalusia sections of Shihâb al-Dîn's book with a commentary by Al-Wahhâb. Centred in the large curve of the Halys, which they called the Marasantiya, they had loose frontiers, their longest extending from the Aegean to the other side of the Euphrates (Hittite Mala) and from the Pontic Mountains to the Mediterranean and the source of the Orontes River. The rock-reliefs, which are still spread all around the country, show the routes by which their armies campaigned. The artifacts of their unsophisticated material culture are among the most interesting items of many museums. In Turkey, even if the traveller may not have the chance to visit their capital Hattusa, the name of the Hittites greets him at every turn.". The aim of this book is to present a brief overview of archaeological and historical research on Caria from the very first signs of occupation in the Prehistoric times to the Late Ottoman period. The region occupied by ancient Caria can roughly be described as the southwestern portion of the Anatolian peninsula South of the Menderes Valley and west of the Dalaman River. The Carians are mentioned several times in the 2nd millennium BCE for having supported the fight of Anatolian nations against the Hittite invaders and later to have fought beside the Hittite kings against the Egyptian forces. They were also counted amongst the legendary Sea People, traveling the Mediterranean, spreading destruction on their path and bringing down some of the most powerful empires of the Late Bronze Age. Later, Homer mentions them in the list of allies who came and supported Troy against the Greeks, emphasizing the wealth of the Carians, who "came to fight decked like a girl with gold".

The name "Byzantine" was used for the first time by the German humanist and philologist Hieronymus Wolf in the 16th century for this empire, whose capital was moved from Rome to the city of Byzantion (with its new name, Constantinople) and became Christian over time. This term became widespread in the 19th century and later. However, the people that this book is about have always called themselves "Roman" and their state the "Roman Empire", while their neighbors also knew them as "Romans". The Byzantine Empire that ruled for about 11 centuries is one of the states whose reign lasted the longest in Anatolia. Anatolia was the geographical, demographic, and economic cradle of this predominantly Greek-speaking Christian population and its culture. The loss of Anatolia as of the 14th century led to the end of the empire in a short time. The cry of Emperor Theodore II Laskaris - "Holy land, my mother, Anatolia!" - in one of his letters from the mid-13th century shows how vital these lands were for the empire. This book aims to present both Byzantine culture and, more specifically, Byzantine Anatolia, through 32 articles by Turkish and foreign Byzantologists, who are experts in their respective fields. While the articles on political, bureaucratic, military, economic and religious life focus on the state apparatus and social structure, articles on literature, health, art, and material culture remains provide valuable information about daily life. In the articles that constitute the last part of the book, the reader is invited to a historical journey through different geographical regions of Byzantine Anatolia.

First and only edition of this uncommon first original Ottoman archaeological guide to Ephesus and Ayasuluk, places where are cities in ancient Greece on the coast of Ionia and one of the seven churches of Asia, prepared by Ogan, during he supervised the excavations of ancient cities like Sardis, Ephesus, Ayasuluk, Selçuk, Pergamon, Didyma, Miletus and conducted research on these sites, which are all very important for the ancient history of West Anatolian geography. In this period, notably, he coordinated the transfer of the artifacts that appeared in various museums all over the country. An illustrated and important guide to this one of the important cities for Christianity with a detailed Turkish Ephesus plan. Aziz Ogan's interest in fine arts and archaeology had formed at a young age thanks to the painter and the founder of the museology and archaeology in the Ottoman Empire, Osman Hamdi Bey, a close friend of Ogan's father and the owner of the neighboring vineyards in Gebze. In 1910, Aziz Ogan graduated from Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi [i.e. The School of Fine Arts], a school he enrolled in as a result of his keen interest. While Ogan was still a student in 1907, he was appointed as a museum official to the Imperial Museum. Ogan was appointed as the inspector of the Izmir Museum of Antiquities in 1914 but with the beginning of World War I and the declaration of the military mobilization, he was drafted to the officer cadet school. After finishing his education, he served both at the Gallipoli Front and the Caucasus Front. In 1917, he was appointed by Cemal Pasha as the deputy consultant to the Museum of Antiquities established in Damascus at the behest of the Fourth Army, and as the headmaster of Damascus technical school which was under the control of the Fourth Army. At the time, the German archaeologist Dr. Theodor Wiegand was the head of the archaeological organization. They had established a deep and intimate friendship in a very short period. en World War I had ended, Izmir was under occupation. Under these conditions, Aziz Ogan couldn't start properly his duties as the inspector of the Izmir Museum of Antiquities until 1922. In 1926 his inspection field was extended to Izmir and the neighboring territory. Aziz Ogan, who played a pivotal role in the preservation of ancient artifacts and in the development of museums, was a member of institutions such as the Turkish Historical Society, the Austrian, Czechoslovakian, Finnish, and German Archaeological Institutes, the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature and the Istanbul Institute.
