‎Joachim Heinrich.‎

‎Papyros Ebers. Das älteste Buch über Heilkunde. Aus dem aegyptischen zum erstenmal vollständig übersetzt.‎

‎Berlin Georg Reimer 1890. Octavo. Pp. xx 214 1 errata. Hardcover bound in later half vellum and patterned boards French corners sides ruled in gilt title in neat manuscript direct to spine shelf-number under mylar stripe; fore-edge of one leaf bit frayed. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Heinrich Joachim 1860-1933 physician medical historian and a distinguished Egyptologist had provided in 1890 the first commentary and translation of the Ebers papyrus. In the introduction to his book he writes: "In the preparation of this book which is chiefly intended for the medical public it was my chief endeavor to provide the reader with the most literal translation possible. . In this way the reader should be given the opportunity to make a contribution insofar as he is now in a position to examine and possibly clarify the uncertain places." Joachim's translation was widely received by the public to whom it was intended; comments and discussions by biologists chemists physicians and pharmacists followed suit. However no reprint has appeared and the present first edition remains in practice a sole edition till today. In 1973 a photomechanical reprint was published. Dr. Arthur F. Hopkirk 1889-1913 a physician translated Joachim's book into English. His unpublished translation is at the Wellcome Library. Another English translation "an interpretation based upon Dr. Joachim's translation" was published in 1930 by C. P. Bryan. Georg Moritz Ebers 1837-1898. Beinlich-Seeber 10423. Provenance: Previously at the Universitätsklinik und Poliklinik für Mund- Zahn- und Kieferkrankheiten Bonn with their coat-of-arms stamp on title-page and scattered inside.
