‎La région canopique connut très tôt un essor important, bien avant la fondation d'Alexandrie par Alexandre le Grand en 331 av. J.-C.; sa position géographique, à l'embouchure du Nil, constituant un carrefour entre l'Égypte et les autres civilisations de la mer Méditerranée. Ainsi, les noms des villes de Canope, d'Héracléion, de Thônis, transmis par les auteurs anciens, véhiculaient des rêves de magnificence sans que les archéologues ne parviennent à les localiser. Ce mystère fut éclairci lorsque l'équipe de Franck Goddio, avec l'apport des technologies les plus modernes, entreprit de dresser une carte géophysique de la région ainsi que du grand port antique d'Alexandrie, constatant qu'une partie de la côte s'était effondrée et gisait six mètres au-dessous du niveau de la mer. Ce fait est expliqué par la conjonction de plusieurs causes: montée du niveau marin, lente subsidence de la côté du bassin oriental de la Méditerranée, effondrements et glissements de terrains catastrophiques déclenchés par des tremblements de terre et des phénomènes de liquéfaction des argiles. Une fois les sites complètement submergés vers le voie siècle, l'érosion naturelle et le recouvrement par d'importants dépôts d'alluvions apportées par les courants ont fini de dérober au regard des hommes seize siècles de civilisation parmi les plus riches du monde égyptien, de la Basse Epoque à la conquête arabe. Le delta du Nil, tant convoité pour ses richesses, avait vu sa civilisation influencée par ses conquérants: les Perses, les Grecs et la longue dynastie des Ptolémées, puis les Romains dont les amours de Jules César et de Cléopâtre resteraient célèbres, l'apparition de la religion chrétienne qui s'exprima dans la destruction des figures païennes mais aussi dans leur assimilation souvent insoupçonnée, et enfin la conquête arabe. Le lent phénomène d'acculturation bouleversa le panthéon des dieux, privilégiant les cultes d'Isis et d'Osiris ainsi que de Sérapis, et s'immisça dans la vie quotidienne, affectant le regard des Egyptiens sur un monde qui deviendrait le berceau de la civilisation occidentale. L'exposition rassemble 494 objets retrouvés lors des fouilles sous-marines de Canope, d'Héracléion et d'Alexandrie. Ils sont dûment inventoriés et commentés dans le catalogue. Pour la première fois est présenté en un même lieu tout le mobilier d'un temple ptolémaïque avec ses statues, parfois colossales, et ses objets de culte. A proximité foisonnaient toutes sortes d'artisanats et d'objets votifs, de céramiques et de bijoux destinés aux pèlerins. Cachés ou protégés par l'eau, ces artefacts nous permettent d'approcher comme jamais auparavant l'extraordinaire brassage de cultures et de peuples qui animait le delta du Nil.‎

Een ode aan de verzamelaar, collectioneurs en erfgoedbezielers. Door deze onwetenschappelijke aanpak kan hij vrijuit spreken over de slechte verhoudingen binnen de wereld van archeologie en kunst en over de bedreigingen van het (inter)nationaal cultureel erfgoed en over de in zijn ogen noodzakelijke maatregelen om dat cultureel erfgoed veilig te stellen; zonder zich al te veel te hoeven bekommeren over het noemen van bronnen. En dat is best verfrissend en ja, soms ook een tikkeltje ongemakkelijk. Maar Stimm doet het erom. Verzamelen - het zit volgens hem in onze genen - van bodemvondsten en oudheden noemt hij een mensenrecht. Ontzameling, van depots en particuliere collecties, omschrijft hij daarentegen als een nietszeggend begrip. Soms gaat Stimm flink te keer. De extreme Duitse registratieplicht van bodemvondsten, duurder dan 1 euro en ouder dan 100 jaar, is volgens hem een voorbeeld van een maniakale regelgeving waardoor parano de situaties dreigen te ontstaan. En als hij het ergens heeft over vervalsingen van archeologische vondsten beweert hij, in dit boek althans ongefundeerd, dat de meeste sporen lopen in de richting van de restauratieafdeling van het desbetreffende museum. Maar goed, de lezer is hiervoor dus van tevoren gewaarschuwd. Het maakt het al met al wel een spannend boek. Een Must-Read voor elke verzamelaar of liefhebber van archeologie en oude kunst.‎

But a year has passed and on it goes, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes. Finds have a strange hold over us. There?s a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there?s too much of ourselves in the object already. We don?t deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display. The more trash we?ve dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. We?ve had to make our hands dirty and?like any good romance?half the pleasure lies in the hunt. So we go hunting for crap that?s out of place. Crap that becomes a find, simply because it was lost. A diamond is nothing very special in a jewellery store, but it?s everything when found among discarded fish. Yet maybe the real reason for this endless trawlings for trinkets is another story altogether. Not that of a seventeenth-century mariner tossing a coin into the Scheldt to buy a safe passage, but the belief that we're not the ones that find the perfectly rounded rock, it's the pebble that finds us. For all its muteness, it speaks to us.‎
