‎Archaeology of Colour. Technical Art History Studies in Greek and Roman Painting and Polychromy‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 450 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9789603710899.‎

‎Summary Ancient polychromy speaks a language of ?the visible? and ?the invisible?, through signs of pigments, brushstrokes and forms. Another reminder of our classical past, colour is an inherent component of artistic creation, inspiration and imagination. New sophisticated technologies, as well as the development of interdisciplinary studies over these past decades, have stimulated the collection and evaluation of numerous scientific data from in-situ investigation of polychrome and painted documents, and have challenged our understanding of the complexity and function of ancient painting materials and techniques. The present volume is another contribution to the ongoing exploration of the rich history of colour in the classical world; an exploration which builds on previous knowledge and opens up new horizons for a more extended understanding of the aesthetics and meaning of Greek and Roman art. It includes fifteen papers that move from Archaic and Classical Greece to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and deal with colour on monumental architecture, marble statues and reliefs, wooden and terracotta statuettes, stone sarcophagi, paintings on stone and plaster, and pigments as raw materials. ‎Summary The volume Strapped for Cash: Needy Soldiers, Reluctant Authorities. Studies on Military Payments in Greek and Roman Antiquity includes eight (8) studies focusing on the question of the payment of soldiers and mercenaries by the issuing authorities in Greek and Roman antiquity. The studies in the volume discuss the use of coinage in relation to the salaries of the troops, but also in relation to the daily needs of the soldiers, both in peacetime and during war operations. The scarcity of sources dealing with the payment of troops leads to interesting methodological approaches, the results of which illuminate aspects of the wider economic and military history. The volume examines the tripartite relationship of Money-Payment-Military activities, through a broad chronological and geographical spectrum covering the period from the Classical period to Roman Imperial times, starting from Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula and reaching to the East TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Authors Panagiotis P. ‎Summary Cet ouvrage s'int resse de curieux petits vases qui ont la particularit de pr senter un bec sur leur panse et de se trouver principalement dans des tombes d'enfants.

‎New Approaches to the Materiality of Text in the Ancient Mediterranean. From Monuments and Buildings to Small Portable Objects‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 262 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:119 b/w, 18 col., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601564.‎

‎Summary In recent years, the study of epigraphy and ancient writings has undergone a 'material turn', as scholars have increasingly looked beyond just the contents of written sources to also focus on their broader material and visual contexts as a way of exploring the layers of different meanings that can attach to written evidence. Taking this interdisciplinary approach as its starting point, this volume draws together contributions from specialists in different fields in order to analyze text-bearing objects and monuments from across the ancient Mediterranean world. From texts inscribed on large stone monuments and buildings, clay, or metal tablets, to writings on papyrus and parchment rolls, jewellery, vases, coins, and textiles, writing on different materials had manifold possibilities. The case studies gathered here examine novel approaches to the creation and display of inscribed objects, as well as to the ways in which such items were approached and perceived by people during a chronological period ranging from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. In doing so, the volume sheds new light not only on the interplay between ancient texts, text-bearers, and viewers within their wider spatial and physical contexts, but also on the possibilities opened by exploring the material aspects of writing through interdisciplinary approaches. ‎Roman Names in the Cyclades. Part ?I‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 504 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:47 col., Language: English. ISBN 9789603710776.‎

‎Summary The second volume of the study on the Roman names in the Cyclades completes the contribution to the social history of a marginal zone of the Roman world. It includes prosopographic catalogues of bearers of Roman names attested on Amorgos, Anaphe, Ios, Naxos, Oliaros, Paros, Pholegandros, Thera and attestations connected generally with the Cyclades, but not with a specific island. An extensive introduction presents the historical context and a synthetic overview of the diffusion of Roman names and citizenship in the Cyclades. The book is enriched by two synthetic contributions written by specialists. One of them (El. Sverkos) focuses on the origin of certain characteristic names and the other (P. Doukellis) on the study of 'spatiality' and the sociological parameters of the diffusion of the names as a method for perceiving the complex mechanisms for the construction of personal identities. This work is also a contribution to the epigraphy of the Cyclades, as the prosopographic catalogues were based on autopsy of the published and unpublished epigraphic material, relocation of stones and research in the archive of the Inscriptiones Graecae (Berlin). This method yielded hitherto unknown prosopographic data as well as new readings and interpretations of epigraphic texts which had not been studied for over a century. As part of the documentation, 47 plates include photos of several inscriptions or their squeezes, which are published here for the first time. ‎Summary In the Late Republican period, Rome underwent monumental changes. Within the city, numerous building projects were undertaken by the wealthy and politically powerful as they jostled for power, while further afield, wars were fought and Rome's authority gradually expanded into new territories. One of the key players in this field was Julius Caesar, who took advantage of the fluid and fast-changing political and military alliances to position himself in the centre of power. During this time, he became the first to design a forum ? the Forum Iulium, now known as Caesar's Forum ? in his family's name. Today, this site, in the very heart of Rome, is home to The Caesar's Forum Project, where excavations have yielded new knowledge about both the long history of Rome, and the broader context of its global history and cultural heritage. Taking this project as its starting point, this volume draws together scholars working both on the excavations, and on Caesar more generally, to shed new light on the often enigmatic figure of Julius Caesar. The chapters gathered here offer insights into remains and sources from both the time of Caesar and from later periods, giving new perspectives not only on his life and death, but also on the central role that he has ever since continued to play in historiography since. ‎Odds and Ends. Unusual Elements in Palmyrene Iconography‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, xiv + 180 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:45 b/w, 63 col., 1 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503603964.‎

‎Summary The funerary art that was produced in Roman Palmyra, a caravan city in the Syrian steppe desert, is rightly world-renowned. The frontal depictions of the deceased, featured in torso-length portraits, and the large-scale banqueting scenes are iconic, and lent an added mystique by the absence of any literary sources that might aid in their interpretation. But while from a distance these exquisite portraits might seem rather formulaic, when examining more closely, it is clear that these scenes reveal a surprisingly rich and varied funerary d cor. Alongside the more popular iconographic choices are singular scenes, motifs, and elements that deviate from the norm, while new patterns and connections between Palmyra and its surroundings are identifiable. This volume, which draws on the vast materials gathered under the auspices of the Palmyra Portrait Project directed by Professor Rubina Raja, explores the 'oddities' raised by the Palmyrene corpus; it examines one-off scenes or elements, and unusual or unparalleled iconographical choices, and it questions how and why such unusual choices should be interpreted. The chapters gathered here not only focus on these visual 'hapax legomena' in Palmyra, but also explore the city's connections with the art of Roman centres to the west, as well as the nearby Hellenistic city states, regional centres of production, and Parthian and Persian sites to the east. Through this approach, the authors engage with the visual richness and sheer amount of choice that existed in Palmyrene funerary art, while also providing unique insights into the knowledge culture that existed within Palmyrene society. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 261 pages, Size:210 x 297 mm, Illustrations:133 b/w, 37 col., 11 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503603995.‎

‎Summary This book presents the results of a research project realised in 2012-14 in the surroundings of the Roman legionary base at Novae (Moesia inferior), transformed in late Antiquity into a civilian town. The publication also contains material from surveys conducted in 1977 and in 2000, which have so far only been partly published. Various research methods were implemented jointly to enable at least a partial reconstruction of the settlement's character. These included geophysical prospection, field walking, and the mapping of metal finds, supplemented by a series of analyses, such as the testing of plant pollen and macroremains, with the aim of providing as complete a reconstruction as possible of the past environment in the fortress' surroundings. We attempted to record both the finds originating from earlier epochs and those from later ones, in order to provide a more complete reconstruction of the settlement landscape and the character of the site. ‎Multi-Disciplinary Approaches to Medieval Brittany, 450?1200. Connections and Disconnections‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xii + 376 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:7 b/w, 13 col., 2 tables b/w., 17 maps b/w, 3 maps color, Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503601106.‎

‎Summary While it is well-established that Brittany and the Insular world were closely linked during the medieval period, the precise nature of these connections continues to spark debate. Was there a significant migration in the fifth century, or were the connections more multi-faceted and enduring than medieval accounts suggest? And how might we triangulate the Atlantic connections with other influences on medieval Brittany, including those from the Carolingian world? Drawing together research that was first presented at the conference 'Brittany and the Atlantic Archipelago: Contact, Myth and History 450-1200', held in Cambridge in December 2017, this volume seeks to present new and ground-breaking research into both Brittany and its broader European context during the medieval period. The chapters gathered here range across various disciplines, including textual history, archaeology, hagiography, onomastics, and the study of liturgical evidence, offering new insights into our understanding of medieval Brittany, as well as drawing out particular connections (and disconnections) between Brittany and its neighbours. ‎Exchange and Reuse in Roman Palmyra. Examining Economy and Circularity‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, x + 132 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:56 b/w, 15 col., 9 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503603421.‎

‎Summary How did ancient cities like Palmyra survive? How did their people produce and manage the resources required for both their short- and long-term needs? Were their methods circular or wasteful? What materials did they reuse, and how? What form did their routine exchanges take? The material culture of Palmyra offers unique potential for addressing these questions in a concrete way. While the city is most famous for its long-distance commerce, a century of excavations at the site, together with a series of recent print publications and digital enterprises, have provided scholars with unprecedented amounts of material objects, among them inscriptions, statues, tesserae, coins, glass and metal finds, textiles, and other objects, all of which shed new light on Palmyra's economy and how its inhabitants consumed, maintained, exchanged, or reused key resources. Drawing together contributions from leading researchers on ancient Palmyra, this volume explores various dimensions of the city's economy from fresh angles. The chapters gathered here feature new methodologies for determining the size of Palmyra's population and for understanding the nature of coins in local exchanges, offer reassessments of the Palmyrene institutions that underpinned economic exchange, examine how Palmyrenes used and reused materials, and consider the forms of exchange and reuse that governed the building activity of Palmyrenes after the city's Roman heyday and within areas of Egypt. ‎Summary In the late fourth millennium BCE, the villages, temples, and palace of the Upper Euphrates region stood between two social worlds: the comparatively hierarchical, centrally organized Mesopotamian social tradition to the south and the comparatively egalitarian, decentralized Kura-Araxes social tradition to the north. Over the next seven centuries, this positioning and the interactions it sparked fed into reactions among the region's inhabitants that ranged from cataclysmic violence to a flowering of innovation in visual culture and social arrangements. These events had a wide array of short-term and long-term impacts, some limited to a single house or settlement, and some, like the innovation of the Warrior Tomb template, that transformed societies across West Asia. With an eye towards detail, a theoretical approach emphasizing personal motivation, and multiple scales of analysis, this book organizes previously unpublished data from six sites in the region, Arslantepe, Ta kun Mevkii, Pulur, Nor untepe, Tepecik, and Korucutepe, dating to this dramatic and transformative period. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 452 pages, Size:200 x 280 mm, Illustrations:74 b/w, 238 col., Language(s):English, Italian. ISBN 9789538250163.‎

‎Summary This volume, dedicated to Ivan Matej?i?, a distinguisehd Croatian art historian and conservator, in honour of his 70th birthday, contains thirty articles covering the fields of art history, archaeology and history. These are all original contributions to debates regarding mostly the period from Late Antiquity to the Renaissance, but not disregarding the Baroque and thus reflecting the broad interests of the celebrant. While several contributions discuss themes related to Dalmatia or Italy, the foucs of the volume is on istria, the meeting point of Central, Mediterranean and Southeast Europe, which was also the region to which Ivan Matej?i? dedicated most of his outstanding work. Therefore it will, withouth doubt, find an interested readership among scholars from many different counries and fields of interest, Byzantine and Carolingian Europe being only the two most prominent. - Prof Neven Budak, University of Zagreb The reviewed book presents more than 30 original scientific papers dealing mostly with Middle Ages and the Renaissance, practically all in the field of art history or archaeology, authored by some of the most qualified international researchers in these fields. It includes diachronical research related to medieval architecture and liturgy, ecclesiastic history, medieval paintings mostly focusing on Christian history and material culture. Most topics published in this book are presented for the first time. The interest of the scientific immunity will be visible in the use of new methodologies in a quite prolific number of papers, with new interpretations of old known material. All former studies of the topics elaborated in this volume are questioned - providing andwers and new perspectives of old problems, while giving new methodologies of interpreting the past. - Prof. Alexandra Chavarria Arnau, University of Padova TABLE OF CONTENTS Miljenko Jurkovi? - Marijan Bradanovi?, Predgovor / Foreword Marijan Bradanovi?, ?ivjeti povijest umjetnosti, raditi ?uvaju?i ba?tinu / Living Art History - Working Preserving Heritage Bibliography of Ivan Matej?i? ‎Animals and Animated Objects in the Early Middle Ages‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 206 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:30 b/w, 37 col., 8 tables b/w., 6 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503600901.‎

‎Summary Since time immemorial, animals have played crucial roles in people's lives. In Continental and Northern Europe, especially in the Migration Period and the Early Middle Ages, animals were both feared and revered. Varying and often ambivalent perceptions of fauna were expressed through everyday practices, religious beliefs, and the zoomorphic ornamentation of a wide plethora of objects that ranged from jewellery, weapons, and equestrian equipment to wagons and ships. This timely volume critically investigates the multivalence of animals in medieval archaeology, literature, and art in order to present human attitudes to creatures such as bears, horses, dogs, and birds in a novel and interdisciplinary way. The chapters gathered together here explore the prominence of animals, animal parts, and their various visual representations in domestic spaces and the wider public arena, on the battlefield, and in an array of ritual practices, but also examine the importance of zoomorphic art for emerging elites at a time of social and political tensions across Scandinavia and the oft-overlooked Western Slavic and Baltic societies. This innovative book draws together scholars from across Europe in order to pave the way for a nuanced international and interdisciplinary dialogue that has the capacity to substantially increase our perception of human and animal worlds of the Early Middle Ages. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 304 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:229 b/w, 13 col., 13 tables b/w., 8 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503600666.‎

‎Summary Roman bathhouses are considered to be prime markers when studying romanization in the provinces of the Empire, as these very specific ? and archaeologically recognizable ? buildings, together with their associated ideas about the body and personal health, introduced a decidedly Roman habit into regions that had hitherto been unfamiliar with (communal) bathhouses and heating technology. While traditionally, studies into Roman baths and bathing have focused on large public baths in the cities of the empire, however, those from the area that now roughly corresponds to modern-day Belgium have often been neglected in recent research as this was an area with few important urban centres. This book for the first time investigates the introduction, spread, and eventual disappearance of Roman-style baths and of bathing habits in this north-western corner of the Roman Empire. A detailed analysis of the architecture, technology, and decoration of both public and private baths is combined with a discussion on the role of bathing in the area's romanization, and supplemented by a fully illustrated catalogue of all bathhouses in the area of study. In doing so, the volume sheds new light not only on the evolution of baths and bathing in this region, but also on their broader role in larger historic processes such as cultural change across the Empire. ‎Summary In the Roman world, wall paintings were one of the most pervasive art forms, adorning buildings of all levels, from public spaces and elite houses to far more modest dwellings. Yet despite the very visual nature of their work, Roman painters have remained largely invisible to history. This book attempts to rectify this situation, by shifting the focus from the paintings themselves to the people who realized them, looking beyond the bright colours and imaginative forms to investigate the materials, production practices, and choices underpinning artistic decisions. Taking Pompeii as its starting point, this volume reconstructs what it meant to paint for a living, and asks if it was actually possible to make a living as a painter in the Roman world. Wall paintings are investigated stylistically but also from an ethnological and economic point of view. Broader comparisons across time and space, combined with a quantitative analysis of the labour involved in making wall paintings, allow the author to assess this art form as an economically-embedded practice. Through this unique approach, the volume exposes the social and economic forces underlying craft production, and offers new insights into the lived experience of Roman artisans. ‎Summary The archaeological excavations conducted from one end of the Mediterranean zone to the other have illuminated the place of gods in the ritual practices in the dwellings of the Graeco-Roman era. The discovery of multiple artefacts, dedicated spaces, and figurative paintings support new avenues of historical, anthropological, and social reflection with the aim of better understanding domestic religious practices in the polytheistic contexts of antiquity. This collective volume organizes those reflections around three axes. The first axis centres on identifying the deities that were favoured in domestic sanctuaries. Which gods are represented and which are not? The second axis concerns the interrelationships evident within domestic ritual spaces and sanctuaries. The third axis is dedicated to the anthropology of rituals. Lines of inquiry informed by anthropological, social, and phenomenological approaches are assuming ever-greater importance in scholarship on Antiquity. It is from this perspective that the authors explore the role that domestic ritual spaces play in shaping the lived environment. ‎Summary The year 1204, when Byzantium was conquered by the participants of the Fourth Crusade, marks a major and violent change on several levels, including politics and the economy, society and religion, as well as art and culture. The once powerful empire experienced both the humiliation of foreign occupation and its political subjugation. After its re-establishment in 1261, Byzantium had become a shrunken state, surrounded by aggressive enemies, while a number of its vital areas, such as Crete and Cyprus, together with the Aegean and Ionian islands, remained under foreign rule. These changes influenced not only the artistic output but the everyday life of the Byzantines as well. New ideas, new preferences, and new techniques are attested in architecture, painting, sculpture, and minor arts, all of which developed a new dynamic. According to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesos (c. 535 - c. 475 B.C.), whose aphorism ????? ???, i.e. everything flows, is highlighted in the title of this collective volume, change is the fundamental essence of the universe. The book aims to provide an up-to-date, well-rounded, and balanced overview of the long thirteenth century, by examining aspects of the artistic and cultural transformations created and developed within the new framework of co-existence among Byzantines, Latins, Slavs, and Ottomans. ‎Summary Between 2002 and 2004, archaeological excavations took place on Powro?nicza Street, in the city of Gda?sk, Poland. Twelve burghers' plots, located in the centre of this former medieval metropolis, were investigated, and yielded a rich collection of archaeological finds, among them ceramics, and items of wood, metal, and glass, from a period stretching from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. These finds are presented here for this first time in this richly illustrated bilingual volume, published in both English and Polish, which lays out a detailed catalogue of all the items, together with a discussion of the site, its settlement phases, and its most significant discoveries. ‎Summary The Christian monastery of Ghazali, located in Wadi Abu Dom, in northern Sudan, is one of the most famous archaeological sites within the country. Built by the Makurians in the seventh century AD, it flourished until its abandonment in the thirteenth century, and its picturesque ruins became a popular tourist attraction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During the period of the monastery's activity, it was an important religious centre, a place where monks lived, worshipped, died, and left important information about their lives buried in the archaeological record. This volume offers a catalogue and in-depth analysis of over two hundred funerary epigraphy monuments, inscribed in Greek and Coptic, onto stone stelae and terracotta plaques, that have been uncovered at Ghazali and that bear an important witness to life and death at the site. The meticulous epigraphic and philological work presented here is combined with a detailed discussion of the ensemble, including their archaeological context, material aspects, language use, and formulary. The analysis of onomastic practices and the monastic hierarchy supplements the picture and brings to the fore both individual persons and the community responsible for the production of these texts. ‎Book Collections as Archaeological Sites. A Study of Interconnectedness and Meaning in the Historical Library of the Canonesses Regular of Soeterbeeck‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 716 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, 267 col., 3 tables b/w., Language: English. FINE ISBN 9782503604589.‎

‎Summary In 1997 the canonesses regular of Soeterbeeck moved from their convent in Deursen (the Netherlands) to a nursing home in Nuland. They left behind an old library of considerable size and historical significance that is now the core of the Soeterbeeck Collection at Nijmegen University Library. It is a suitable starting point for telling the story of the historical library of a women's convent with roots in the Modern Devotion, from the community's humble beginnings in 1448 to the present day. This study describes the collective history of all manuscripts and early printed books that are known to have been in communal or personal ownership at Soeterbeeck. It investigates the books' production and delves into their traces of use. Many of these are connected to each other, usually because they were left by the same person or had the same purpose. Such units transcend the level of individual volumes and reveal what might be called the stratification of the historical library as a whole. They can be interpreted in the context of the sisters' personal lives and the convent's communal history. This approach provides insight in the multiplicity of meanings that the books had for their users. For the first time, theoretical principles of modern archaeology are used to map a historical library as an archaeological site. A scholarly catalogue of the Soeterbeeck Collection that documents its traces of use is also included. Stunning illustrations visually lay bare the books' eventful lives. ‎Perspectives on Byzantine Archaeology. From Justinian to the Abbasid Age (6th?9th Centuries AD)‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 251 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:100 b/w, 5 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503596846.‎

‎Summary From the rule of Justinian (AD 527-AD 565) up to the Islamic conquests in the Byzantine Empire, the lands of the Mediterranean basin underwent significant change from the sixth to the ninth centuries AD. Urban and rural areas were transformed, landscapes altered, and material cultures saw a fundamental shift. But such changes were by no means uniform across the region. From Jordan, Greece, and the Danube, to the Italian peninsula, Sicily, Spain, and the Horn of Africa, the contributions gathered together in this volume explore new advances and perspectives from the field of 'Byzantine' archaeology over the longue dur e in order to shed new light on this period. What was the impact of the reconquest of Justinian? What was the impact of Byzantium in archaeological record? What are the archaeological indicators of urban and rural transformations from the sixth to the ninth centuries? Did architecture represent a marker of socio-economic and cultural change within the Byzantine world? By engaging with such key questions, and by drawing on new data from surveys, excavations, material culture, and historical sources, this volume offers new insights into archaeological perspectives on the broader Byzantine world. ‎Corcyra. A City at the Edge of Two Greek Worlds‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 2 vols, 747 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9789607905970.‎

‎Summary The current monograph on Corcyrean history has the aim of offering a synthesis on the history of the island from the time of the Liburnian tribe of the Kerkyres, after which the island was named, to the end of the ancient world and the destruction of the temples of the Greek gods by ????????, the local episkopos. For this reason, it takes into consideration all available evidence deriving from Greek and Latin literary sources, epigraphic documents, Corcyrean coinage and archaeological excavations on the island of Corcyra. All aspects of Corcyrean history are discussed: the geography of the island, the relations with Corinth, Athens, the kings of Epirus and, finally, the Romans, its position in the international politics, the numerous staseis, its institutions, the Corcyrean navy, the island's legendary background and religious life, its coinage and numismatic policy. Prosopography, onomastics and name-giving practices are also discussed as well as Corcyrean society. Finally, different readings of some significant events of Greek history involving Corcyra are discussed: Corcyrean power, the Corcyreans at the sea battle of Salamis, Corcyra and the network of Corinthian colonies in the North West, the beginning of the Peloponnesian War and the real causes of this war, Corcyra during the Peloponnesian War, insularity, geographic position and their impact on the history and shaping of identity of the city-island? The first volume analyzes its geographical location, history, economy and monetary policy (chs I-XII), institutions, legendary background, identity and religious life (chs XIII, XIV, XV). The second volume studies Corcyrean prosopography (XVI), onomastics (XVII) and society (XVIII). This volume also contains lists of names, three Appendices, bibliography and different indices, plates depicting coins of Corcyra, and a map of the island.‎

‎Summary This volume analyses how and why members of scholarly societies such as the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Leopoldina collected specimens of the natural world, art, and archaeology in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These scholarly societies, founded before knowledge became subspecialised, had many common members. We focus upon how their exploration of natural philosophy, antiquarianism, and medicine were reflected in collecting practice, the organisation of specimens and how knowledge was classified and disseminated. The overall shift from curiosity cabinets with objects playfully crossing the domains of art and nature, to their well-ordered Enlightenment museums is well known. Collective Wisdom analyses the process through which this transformation occurred, and the role of members of these academies in developing new techniques of classifying and organising objects and new uses of these objects for experimental and pedagogical purposes. ‎Faustina the Younger. Coinage, Portraits, and Public Image‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, vii + 205 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:96 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9780897223669.‎

‎Summary The Roman empress Faustina the Younger, wife of the emperor Marcus Aurelius and mother to at least eleven imperial children, including the future emperor Commodus, not only played a key role in Roman history of the 2nd century AD but also was the subject of almost unparalleled commemoration in visual media, especially sculpture and coinage, during her lifetime. This book examines the single largest surviving ancient source for the portraiture and public image of Faustina the Younger: the coinage struck in her name under Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. The coinage of Faustina the Younger is rich in original iconography and long in duration but its chronology and the relationships between its various types are unclear at best, unknown at worst. This study seeks to remedy this situation by employing the methodology of die analysis to create a new and firm chronology for Faustina's coinage. The results make it possible to establish an authoritative typology for Faustina's portraiture and to show the precise relationship between the diverse obverse and reverse types. The die analysis also clarifies Faustina's complicated iconographic program, making it possible to compare it directly with the iconography of the better-dated coinage of her male contemporaries. Taken together, these results permit a complete re-evaluation of the coinage, portraits and public image of Faustina the Younger. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction. ‎Summary This volume offers a unique exploration into the cultural history of the Mediterranean in the Early Modern Period by examining the region through the prism of Christian-Muslim encounters and conflicts and the way in which such relationships were represented in art works from the time. Taking images from the period as its starting point, this interdisciplinary work draws together contributors from fields as varied as cultural history, art history, archaeology, and the political sciences in order to reconstruct the history of a region that was often construed in the Early Modern period as a 'borderland' between religions. From discussions of borders as both physical construction and mental construct in the Mediterranean to case studies exploring the Battle of Lepanto, and from analyses of art work produced from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries to a consideration of the influence of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean Basin, the chapters gathered together in this insightful volume provide a new approach to our understanding of Early Modern Mediterranean history. ‎Water Management in Gerasa and its Hinterland. From the Romans to AD 750‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, xxxviii + 522 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:416 b/w, 6 col., 40 tables b/w., 59 maps b/w, 4 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503598628.‎

‎Summary The Decapolis city of Gerasa has seen occupation since the Bronze Age but reached its zenith in the Roman to early Islamic period as a population centre and trading hub. Located in a fertile valley in the limestone foothills of the Ajlun mountains, the city bene?tted from a benign climate and an excellent local water supply from karstic springs and perennial streams. By the Roman-Early Byzantine period, these water sources were harnessed and managed by extensive aqueduct and distribution networks that satis?ed the broad range of water needs of both urban and rural dwellers. This volume offers an up-to-date, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary analysis of the water management system employed in both Gerasa and its hinterland from the time of Roman occupation to the devastating earthquakes that struck the city at the end of the Umayyad period. Drawing on archaeological evidence from the author's ?eld research, together with a critical and detailed analysis of the evidence of water installations and the results of a radiocarbon dating study, this insightful book offers the ?rst diachronic interpretation of Gerasa's water distribution, setting the city in its geoarchaeological, historical, and landscape contexts, and contributing to the broader understanding of its archaeological history.‎

‎Summary The Ancient Egyptians used it for both the living and the dead, the Greeks and Romans used it to signal their status, and it aided the Vikings in reaching the far shores of Europe and Eurasia. Textiles have surrounded us, literally and figuratively for millennia, but this common thread has long been ignored in scholarly research. With the inception of the Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen in 2005, however, this approach changed fundamentally, and today, every type of research discipline comes together to begin unravelling the stories told by textiles. How do we understand textiles and how do we talk about them? Who produced textiles, where, and for what purposes? How do we conduct research into the origins of materials? How did cultivating flax or raising sheep change the ancient landscape? How have we researched textiles so far? What can we learn from textiles about society, gender, and production? This volume engages with these questions and explores how the fabric of society has changed through researching textiles in all its facets, from archaeology and history to natural sciences. Taking as its starting point the research interests and career of its honorand, Eva Andersson Strand, this meticulously researched volume consists of three parts, covering the tools and techniques that form the basis of all research explores; how craftspeople made use of tools and techniques; and how textiles have been used over millennia to signify identity and status. ‎Summary Monasteries contributed to every aspect of life during the middle ages, from the structures monks built, to land management, craft production to the intellectual and spiritual life of the medieval world. There were more than 300 orders or congregations in existence during the middle ages, yet scholarship considers only a small number of them (notably Cistercians and Cluniacs), and privileges selected sites, such as Mont Saint-Michel, San Francesco in Assisi or Christ Church in Canterbury. This volume considers the history and architecture of other congregations that are essential to a more complete understanding of monasticism in the European middle ages: Augustinians, lesser known Benedictines, Carthusians, Celestines, Clarissans, and Tironensians in France, as well as the Camaldolese and Vallombrosans in Italy. ‎Summary The 1,055 drawings catalogued in these four volumes are mainly divided between the Royal Library at Windsor Castle and the Department of Greece and Rome of the British Museum, but are also scattered in other public and private collections across the world. They correspond most closely to Cassiano's definition of the Paper Museum as his attempt to have 'skilled young draughtsmen' draw 'everything good in marbles and bronze which can provide some information about antiquity'. He focused in the first instance on the ancient figurative reliefs which are especially abundant in the city of Rome, carved on marble sarcophagi, tombstones, altars, bases and a wide range of other monuments. The drawings depict both the public reliefs of the city - such as those on the Arch of Constantine or the Column of Marcus Aurelius - and those from the major Roman private collections of the period, including the Aldobrandini, Borghese, Medici, Farnese, Barberini and Giustiniani collections. Cassiano started the project in the 1620s with the intention of publishing the drawings as a series of prints. No printed edition ever came to pass, but the drawings collection expanded with still greater energy in the 1630s, when Pietro Testa and other young artists from the circle of Pietro da Cortona were employed. After Cassiano's death in 1657 the enterprise was carried forward by his younger brother Carlo Antonio, who continued to collect drawings of sarcophagi and reliefs well into the 1680s. Sixteenth century purchases were also made for the collection, including works by Battista Franco and Pirro Ligorio. Four introductory essays explore the context in which the project evolved and discuss the collecting history of the Paper Museum as attested by the mounts and numbering found on many of the drawings. The range of different hands at work are identified, and a detailed survey is provided of the existing albums or the past configurations of others now dismembered.‎

‎Summary What happens when scholars cross outside the perceived 'boundaries' of their discipline? What problems arise when a scholar trained in one field employs materials or methodologies from an adjacent subject area, engaging with new sources, research methodologies, and traditions, and how can such issues be resolved? Taking as its starting point the increasing shift towards interdisciplinarity seen within Viking-age studies, this collection of essays aims to explore the benefits and pitfalls that can arise from crossing disciplinary borders in this area, and to gain new knowledge about how to address issues that have occurred in previous examples of interdisciplinary combinations. The volume draws together contributions from authors in different disciplines, among them philology, history, archaeology, literary studies, folklore studies and history of religion, in order to hold a constructive and multi-perspective discussion on the benefits and issues arising from interdisciplinary research in studies of the Viking Age. Together, these chapters aim to bridge the gap that often exists between scholars from adjacent fields of research, and in doing so, to stimulate the trend in interdisciplinary approaches to research that can improve our understanding of the past. ‎Carvers and Customers in Roman Palmyra. The Production Economy of Limestone Loculus Reliefs‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, xiv + 294 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:49 b/w, 39 col., 23 tables b/w., 1 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503597850.‎

‎Summary Palmyra, located in the Syrian desert, is famous for the portraiture of its citizens, produced when the ancient city was at the height of its powers in the Roman era. At this time, several hundred funerary monuments were built and the Palmyrenes decorated their tombs with numerous portraits. The most common of these are the loculus reliefs that depicted Palmyra's men, women, and children, and were used to close off the niches in tombs behind which the dead were buried. Between AD 50 and AD 273, these stone slabs were produced in sufficient numbers to make Palmyra home to the largest corpus of funerary portraits outside Rome itself. This volume offers a fresh and nuanced analysis of Palmyrene funerary reliefs and their production in order to shed light not just on the people they depicted, but on the individuals responsible for their creation. Across a range of different case studies, the author explores the making of single portraits from the local limestone, examining how Palmyrene carvers worked, the techniques they used, the tools they employed, the ways in which style and technique changed over time, and the mode of production that was in place. Furthermore, the workshops' organization, the interaction between carvers and customers, and their influence on the portraits are explored. In doing so, the volume offers not just a detailed study of limestone carving and the techniques that underpinned Palmyra's famous portraits, but also offers a significant contribution to wider research on funerary portraiture of the city and in Roman Syria. ‎Elite Women in Hellenistic History, Historiography, and Reception‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 172 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 2 col., 1 tables b/w., 1 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503611068.‎

‎Summary The Hellenistic world, with its many new cultural trends and traditions, has often proved a challenging period for scholars. In the wake of changing political, religious, cultural, economic, and social conceptions and practices, gender roles and notions also underwent significant change, leading to the emergence of strong female figures. Up to now, however, no major encompassing research work on elite Hellenistic women has been published. This volume aims to fill this historiographical gap by gathering together contributions covering a wide range of geographical, chronological, and cultural backgrounds. While mostly focused on royal women, the chapters included here also seek to provide readers with an accurate and diverse description of the female experience in the Hellenistic period. The contributors to this book, both renowned scholars and new voices in the discipline, together advocate for a fresh approach that goes beyond the often problematic approaches of earlier historiography and provides a new understanding of elite women in the period. ‎Palmyra and the East‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, xx + 181 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:103 b/w, 3 col., 6 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503598253.‎

‎Summary The ancient caravan city of Palmyra, although located in the Syrian Desert, was very much a cultural locus, a place where peoples, goods, and ideas met and mingled from as far afield as Europe to the west and India and China to the east. It was a city that stood balanced between the power of the Roman Empire to one side, and the Parthian Empire to the other. Yet despite the city's location at a cultural crossroads, and its greater proximity to Parthia than Rome, scholars focusing on Palmyra have traditionally focused on links with the west, while relatively little attention has been paid to the threads that wove a connection between Palmyra and regions further to the east. This edited volume seeks to address this lacuna in scholarship by offering an in-depth exploration of Palmyra's connections with its eastern neighbours in the first three centuries ad. The papers gathered here examine the city's art, architecture, and material finds, its languages and inscriptions, its political interactions, social life, and religious identity from a time when Palmyra was at the height of its powers in order to shed light on the city's own distinctive identity, as well as its close ? and often tense ? relationships with Parthia and beyond. Together, these contributions offer fascinating new insights into Palmyra's dynamic relationships with the regions to its east, as well as on how these influences underpinned and were diffused throughout Palmyrene culture.
