‎CYPRUS AND THE EAST AEGEAN: INTERCULTURAL CONTACTS FROM 3000 to 500 B.C‎

‎Proceedings of an International Archaeological Symposium held at Samos. Soft cover 29.4X21 cm 264 pp. ill. tables maps drawings. Contains 22 papers by scholars from various parts of Europe including Greece Cyprus and Turkey. Cultural interconnections between Cyprus and the Aegean started already early in the 3rd millennium B.C. when the Cypriots adopted the know-how of tin bronze from the south-east and southern coasts of Anatolia. These contacts became closer during the second millennium B.C. when Cyprus was dominant in the Mediterranean as the most important supplier of copper and welcomed Greek colonists from Mycenaean Greece towards the end of the millennium. During the first millennium B.C. interconnections became even closer not only in commerce but also in culture since the Aegean particularly the eastern Aegean constituted the gateway of communication with Anatolia and the Persian Empire. Furthermore the Aegean occupied a strategic position as the rules of early navigation necessitated a passage through the south-eastern Aegean for those sailing from Cyprus to continental Greece and vice-versa. Contacts between Cyprus and the Dodecanese were lively and continuous throughout the Late Bronze Age and the first half of the first millennium B.C. something which was highlighted during a recent international archaeological symposium held on Rhodes in May 2009. As early as the 16th century B.C. there are numerous ceramic imports from Cyprus to Rhodes where they are found mainly as tomb-gifts in the necropolis of Ialysos; on several occasions the Rhodians imitated Cypriote ceramics not only their shape but also their decoration. This phenomenon continued also during the first millennium B.C. both on Cos and Rhodes. From the 8th to the 6th centuries B.C. when Cypriote kingdoms reached the peak of their wealth and power and when the sanctuaries of Hera and Aphrodite flourished on Samos and Rhodes respectively large quantities of Cypriote terracotta and limestone statues and statuettes found their way to these sanctuaries as votive offerings where they were even imitated locally. The same may be said about the sanctuaries of Ionia namely those of Cnidos and Miletus. Communications at the Samos symposium covered the whole chronological spectrum from the prehistoric period down to the end of the archaic period. ‎CYPRIOT CERAMICS READING THE PREHISTORIC RECORD‎

‎A.G. Leventis Foundation 1991. Brand new. Hard cover 28 cm 258 pp. ill. Papers on the pottery of the Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic through Late Bronze/Early Iron Age periods; two papers deal with ethnoarchaeogical evidence and one is devoted to regional classification of cypriot terracottas. The principles of Bronze Age pottery classification and interpretation of ceramic variability are considered in the two final papers. Much dissatisfaction has recently been expressed with the present ceramic classification system; changes in this classification and new directions in studying ceramics were proposed during the conference. Such a gathering should provide a stimulus for all scholars to proceed along new lines while also encouraging more communication and cooperation between specialists. A.G. The chronological range is from the Aceramic Neolithic to the Roman period. Anthropomorphic figurines of the Neolithic are surveyed by Le Brun and Bronze Age plank figures by Lubsen-Admiraal. Merrillees discusses the carvings in the dromos of Karmi-Palealona Tomb 6 and Astroem a relief-decorated stone basin fragment from Hala Sultan Tekke. For later period material individual reports cover the sculptures from Kition Kouklia Nea Paphos Marion Amathus and Miletus. Other presentations are concerned with subjects such as temple boys and the motivation for the dedication of sculptures. A.G. Leventis Foundation, 1994 paperback‎

This century begins with the moral and economic preparations for the liberation of the Greeks reaches an apex with the 1821 Revolution and concludes with the first decades of the operation and development of the new Greek state. Through rare works of art and special testimonies from each era the three parts of the exhibition and the corresponding chapters of the catalogue offer a fascinating journey of history and art a journey that in each step reveals why this adventurous century remains so deeply engaging even in the 21st century.

The monumental catalogue 1821 Before and After: Greeks and Greece Revolution and State is one of the most important publications on modern Greece in recent years.

Luxurious testimonies and artefacts of everyday life from the pre-revolutionary period mementoes of war from the Revolution years along with documents related to all forms of Greek administration coexist with bourgeois and popular artworks from the first decades of the new state combined with works of art from the 19th 20th and 21st centuries; altogether they testify to the echoes and reception of the Greek War of Independence. Together with loans from the co-organiser banks from organizations and from private collectors the extensive collections amassed by Antonis Benakis for the Museum he founded and donated to the Greek state take pride of place. ‎
In English. Hard cover 29 cm 304 pp. 362 figs.; net weight 1500 gr. ISBN: 9607320026.

The ruins of Kourion are located adjacent to the south coast of Cyprus a short distance west of Limassol. The temple of Apollo Hylates was first excavated systematically by George McFadden and the University of Pennsylvania in 1935. Two main architectural phases are now known to exist the earliest belonging to the latest Classical or Early Hellenistic period and the overlying second phase to the 1 st century A.D. As can be seen from the partial reconstruction the temple was a magnifcent construction occupying the highest and most commanding position at the end of the sacred street of the sanctuary. The four main chapters of the volume are devoted to a general outline of the city of Kourion and the temple followed by a history of archaeological investigation of the temple including excavation in 1983 prior to the reconstruction work. The finds from this excavation are discussed by Ieronymidou. The architecture of the temple in its different phases forms the subject of the third chapter and the fourth is devoted to the restoration. Preface by Vassos Karageorghis. Index of geographical and proper names.

For a review see: www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/711935uid=3738128&uid=2129&uid=2&uid=70&uid=4&sid=55862804393.

.

.

===================================================

IMPORTANT: The shipping cost in not included in the price. ‎TOMBS AT PALAEPAPHOS: 1. Teratsoudhia 2. Eliomylia‎

‎A.G. Leventis Foundation 1990. Brand new. Hard cover 23X30 cm VIII167 pp. 92 plates 17 figures 2 tables. With a chapter by D. Michaelides and appendices by Gisele Clerc Christa Clamer S. Sherratt J.- C. Courtois Carolyn Elliott David S. Reese J.N. Coldstream and Paul Croft. // The tombs published in this volume date to the Late Bronze Age and are located approx. lkm. SSE of the village of Kouklia. Two extensive tomb complexes T. 104 and 105 and a well were excavated at Teratsoudhia and a single tomb at Eliomylia. The Teratsoudhia tombs were used in LC IA/B through LC IIC/IIIA with considerable looting and remodelling in the Archaic period. The well contained settlement material covering the whole span from LC I to LC IIIA and these excavations have shown that the Late Bronze Age settlement extended as far south as Teratsoudhia. The earliest burial in the Eliomylia tomb is dated end of LC II or transitional to LC III. For each excavation description of the tomb or complex is followed by a catalogue of artifacts found discussion and conclusions. The material from these tombs provides evidence for periods such as LC I for which the Palaepaphos settlement has so far yielded little or nothing and they further document the flourishing nature of the LC IIC/IIIA phase in this area. Appendices cover imports from Egypt and Greece Mycenaean pottery weights the ground stone industry astragali etc. and faunal remains. A.G. Leventis Foundation, 1990 hardcover‎

‎Maison de l'Orient Mediterraneen 1994. Brand new. Soft cover 32 cm 214 pp. ill. Large numbers of fragments of mould-made standing draped female figurines dating to the Classical period were found at Salamis not in association with a particular building but in debris associated with the ramparts suggesting the location of a sanctuary nearby. 909 items are catalogued in this volume. Some figures have a decorated headdress calathos others are carrying various types of animals birds flowers or other objects or holding their breasts. Analysis of the figurines indicates that certain series were made in workshops at Salamis whereas others were probably made elsewhere in eastern Cyprus. The figurines are an important source of information on female dress and jewellery of the time and they illuminate fashions and tastes at Salamis in the 5th- 4th centuries B.C. Preface by Jean Pouilloux foreword by Marguerite Yon. Concordance table between Salamis inventory numbers and catalogue numbers in publication. Index of museums. General index. ‎
In English. Soft cover 29 cm 356 pp. b/w & colour figures tables drawings; net weight 1750 gr. ISBN: 9789963560936.

From the Introduction: "The Eastern Mediterranean has been a field of cultural interaction since early prehistoric times 11th mill. B.C. Due to the need for the acquisition of raw materials ceramic technologies and metalwork interaction became more intensive in the second half of the third millennium BC. Cultural interaction reached its peak at the end of the second millennium BC when population groups deriving in particular from palatial political-economic entities reached neighbouring coasts in order either to establish emporia and expand their economic influence within the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean or in order to escape from their homeland for social and political reasons. The presence of foreign traders or immigrants can be traced in material culture. The categories of finds and the intensity of the presence of 'foreign' customs in everyday life cooking industrial activities textile production metalworking and symbolic actions feasts of elite groups from the Aegean through Anatolia and Cyprus to the Near East are strong indicators for the tracing of ethnicity in the eastern Mediterranean. The aim of this International Symposium is to study the aforementioned aspects based upon new archaeological and analytical evidence and possibly to reconstruct the networks of population movements in Bronze Age Cyprus and neighbouring regions." // CONTENTS: Vassos Karageorghis ‘What happened in Cyprus c. 1200 BC: hybridization creolization or immigration An introduction 19-28 Jennifer M. ‎Vassos Karageorghis & Petre Alexandrescu‎

‎KYPRIAKA IN ROMANIA‎

‎
In English. Soft cover 27 cm 74 pp. ill.

Cyprus never had in its history direct cultural relations with Romania; there were periods however when the cultures of the two countries had close relations particularly during the early Prehistoric period when we recognize common characteristics in religious practices namely in the cult of the Great Goddess of fertility. During the Archaic period the "homeric'" burials with rich tomb gifts are encountered both in Cyprus Salamis Palaepaphos and in Romania necropolis of Istria. No doubt both Cyprus and Romania were under the influence of the rich cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East. These common characteristics were underlined during an exhibition of ancient Cypriote art in 2005 when a collection of Cypriote antiquities on loan from the Medelhavsmuseet of Stockholm was exhibited in the National History Museum in Bucharest. It was then that the idea was conceived to publish and make known a small collection of Cypriote antiquities which are now in the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Romania in Bucharest. This collection was donated to the Institute after the end of the First World War by the collector Prince Michael Soutsos a descendant of a princely family of Phanariotes and a scholar in his own right 1841-1933. The largest part of his collection consisted mainly of Greek antiquities. He traveled extensively in Egypt and Europe and had connections with the scholars of that period particularly the French. The Romanians consider Michael Soutsos as one of the great benefactors and patrons of their Academy of Sciences. The small collection of Cypriote antiquities comprises vases dating from the Early Bronze Age to the Archaic period and some limestone heads of the Archaic Classical and Hellenistic periods. They were purchased in all probability from Cesnola. The main purpose of the publication of this Collection b y the Leventis Foundation edited by V. Karageorghis is to encourage the study of the civilization of Cyprus in Romania a country where classical studies were flourishing in the past and which had close connections with the Greek world especially during the period of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. This publication was requested also by the Romanian colleagues themselves for the purpose mentioned above especially now that their country is about to join the European Union. Apart from the description and archaeological evaluation of the objects of the collection and two objects from the University Museum of Timisoara the book comprises the following chapters: The cult of the Great Goddess of Cyprus during the early Prehistoric period by Dr Jacqueline Karageorghis; the cult of the Great Goddess in Romania during the Chalcolithtic period by Prof. Silvia Marinescu-Bilcu; the "Homeric" burials in the necropolis of Histria by Prof. Academician Petre Alexandrescu; the "homeric" burials in Cyprus by Prof. V. Karageorghis. The chapter on the history of the collection and a lengthy account of the personality of Michael Soutsos has been written by Prof. Maria Alexandrescu-Vianu.
A.G.
