The main purpose of the book is to describe and explain the reliefs carved on the Railing and Gateway. This Part I deals with the so-called ?decorative reliefs? and gives an account of a number of such art motifs occurring on the monument and tries to bring out their meaning and significance as well as the reason of their occurrence on the Railing and Gateway.‎

‎Archaeology of War. Studies on Weapons of Barbarian Europe in the Roman and Migration Period‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 264 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:108 b/w, 23 col., 1 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, 7 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503607375.‎

‎From graves to settlements, and from the battlefield to underwater sacrificial sites, weapons dating to the Roman and Migration Period have long been found in an array of contexts throughout the region that forms modern-day Poland. This volume for the first time aims to draw together research into these finds, gathered throughout the author?s career, in a synthetic approach that sees discoveries of swords and other armaments analysed against a broad, comparative background. The work begins with a focus on votive deposits from lakes, here used as a lens for addressing questions about military strategy and war ritual more generally, before moving on to explore the weapons and warriors of the Przeworsk and Wielbark Cultures, as well as shedding light on the lives of the Balts. Finally, an in-depth analysis is made of shields from the protohistoric period, exploring the genesis and variability of the forms taken by this protective weapon. Through this approach, this richly illustrated volume sheds new light not only on the typology and chronology of weaponry from the Roman and Migration Periods, but also on the symbolism and functionality that these arms held.‎

‎Summary Sympozjum Egejskie. Papers in Aegean Archaeology is a peer- reviewed series that has been designed to fulfil the role of a platform for presenting and introducing a wide range of new research approaches and themes within the broad area of Aegean Archaeology. This is primarily achieved through showcasing the work of newcomers to the discipline, in other words those scholars who are currently at the beginning of their research career in the field of Aegean Archaeology, as well as scholars working outside the traditional university structure such as independent scholars, professional field archaeologists, museum curators and conservators. It is our hope that this series will serve as a concise guide to the most recent research undertaken by early career scholars and the diverse and inspiring new trends in the archaeology of the Prehistoric Aegean, as well as shining a light on the future direction of the discipline. ‎Sarazm: A Site along the Proto-Silk Road at the Intersection of the Steppe and Oasis Cultures. Results from Excavation VII‎

‎, Brepols - 2023, 2024 Paperback, xxvi + 258 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:20 b/w, 181 col., 74 tables b/w., 8 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503602943.‎

‎Summary Sarazm, in modern-day Tajikistan, is rightly famous as an archaeological site. A Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement, it formed part of a cultural and economic network that stretched from the steppe of Central Asia across to the Iranian Plateau and the Indus. Between 1984 and 1994, fieldwork led by a joint Tajik-French project took place at Excavation VII, yielding unique archaeological contexts and materials that shed light on Sarazm's multicultural nature, its evolution through time, and the varied activities that took place at the site. Now, in this new volume, the first comprehensive description and analysis of all available data from Excavation VII is presented, and the data from this excavation contextualized both at site level and within the broader setting of the Steppe and Oasis cultures of the IVth and IIIrd millennia BCE. The author offers functional, cultural, and chronological conclusions about the exposed occupations, as well as putting forward new interpretations and hypotheses on this important settlement.‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, approx. 220 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Illustrations:80 col., Language: English. ISBN 9788028004255.‎

‎Summary Reapproaching Conques from new contexts is the basis of the present volume, a product of the international project ?Conques in the Global World. Transferring Knowledge: from Material to Immaterial Heritage? (Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange H2020). Although it is an important location of cultural heritage and has been consequential historiographically and in the formation of art history, there has never been a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to this momentous site. Thus, this volume publishes the first results of the interdisciplinary and international project, which were initially presented at a conference and enriched by workshops held in New York City in the summer of 2022. The collected essays open with reflective and historiographic work on Conques in the nineteenth century. These segue into essays reconsidering specific integral elements of extant medieval materials at the site. Finally, the volume concludes with a series of essays devoted to placing Conques in a broader context. The entire volume aims to open to as yet unaddressed questions in scholarship on Conques, with the hope that this work will provide a foundation for future studies. ‎Summary This volume investigates settlement trajectories and systems of movement in the Birecik-Carchemish sector of the Euphrates River Valley from the fifth to the third millennium BCE. Integrating remote sensing analyses, published data of individual surveys and excavations, and the original results of the ?Land of Carchemish Project', this multi-scalar study shows the significant longevity of settlement choices and the role of small sites in shaping the cultural landscape of the region, both along the Euphrates and in the uplands. Attention is paid to the dynamics behind settlement creation and continuity, while the author also provides a reassessment of the radiocarbon dates from sites in the area of study. ‎Summary The Mediterranean has, for millennia, formed the heart of an intensive trading network of ideas, goods, and people. For the ancient populations of the Levant, Cyprus, and Southern Anatolia, interactions with the sea ? from fishing to seafaring, and from trade to dye production ? were a constant presence in their life. But how did the coastal peoples of the Bronze Age understand the sea? How did living on the shore influence their lives, from daily practices to mythological beliefs? And what was the impact on their conceptual world? This volume seeks to engage with these questions by addressing the relationship between environment, diet, material production, perception, and thought formation through a combination of archaeological analysis and engagement with primary sources, and in doing so, it offers unique insights into the conceptual world of the ancient Mediterranean maritime cultures of the 2nd millennium BCE. ‎Maritime Exchange and the Making of Norman Worlds‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, x + 230 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:17 b/w, 12 col., 3 maps b/w, 3 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503602172.‎

‎Summary Between c. 1000 and c. 1200 AD, emigrants from Normandy travelled long distances from their homeland, spreading their political influence to the shores of the North Sea, the Irish Sea, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Baltic. Their willingness to cross the seas gave Normans access to new territories and new ideas, extending their authority and reputation far beyond northern France. But how and why were these Norman groups able to develop such power? The chapters collected here engage directly with this question by examining the sites and processes that underpinned this expansion. The contributors ask what different Norman groups took from the societies around them, and what they rejected; they consider how non-Norman powers ? in Ireland, England, the Fatimid Caliphate, Byzantium, the Holy Land, and Rus' ? responded to, and were shaped by, their interactions with Normans in contested zones; and they examine how Normans understood and imagined their own relationship with the sea as a place of exchange, a zone of uncertain control, and an ambiguous kind of border. Drawing together material culture and written evidence, this far-reaching volume offers a fully-developed discussion of how, and in what ways, these Norman worlds and societies could be said to be ?transcultural', and in doing so, makes a compelling case that attention to movement and maritime exchange must be central to our understanding of the extension of Norman influence in this period. ‎Magnification and Miniaturization in Religious Communications in Antiquity and Modernity. Materialities and Meanings‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, xiv + 230 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:47 b/w, 72 col., 3 maps b/w, 1 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503604794.‎

‎Summary Human agents might not be the measure of all things. Nonetheless, human bodies, and their bodily dimensions, often are, with size impacting on the ways in which we conceive of, interact with, and relate to the world around us. The scaling up or down of features ? magnification and miniaturization ? is particularly evident in the creation of anthropogenic items intended for use in religious ritual, and here sizing can be employed as a deliberate strategy to encourage shock and awe, admiration and deterrence, among spectators. Taking as its starting point the concept of 'materialities and meanings', this volume explores how human perceptions and understanding of magnified and miniaturized forms and structures are shaped and changed, both synchronically and diachronically, by our understanding of the human body and its size, and the impact that this has in our relationship with the wider world in the context of ritual practices. The chapters collected here consider a range of questions, from a discussion on the essentials of magnification or miniaturization to an exploration of the impact of such strategies on humans and their wider socio-political ramifications. Together, these chapters contribute to a unique discussion that offers new insights into 'materialities and meanings', the creation of items for ritual, and the ways in which they influence human perception and understanding. ‎Summary In 2015, the Danish-German Northwest Quarter Project working in Jerash uncovered a Middle Islamic farmstead. Subsequent excavations revealed that this settlement, far from marking a decline at the site, is in fact indicative of a broader active and dynamic rural community living within the ancient urban landscape of Jerash. This volume offers an in-depth focus on this Islamic settlement, with a particular focus on the ceramic material yielded by the site, which is here fully quantified and contextually analysed alongside historical sources. Through this approach, the author has reconstructed a new synthesis of Middle Islamic settlement history, shedding new light on the economic and social structures of a rural community in northern Jordan, as well as establishing a typology that can be used to refine the chronologies of Middle Islamic Jerash. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, xxii + 424 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:149 b/w, 166 col., 4 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, 7 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503605647.‎

‎Summary Archaeology as a discipline has undergone significant changes over the past decades, in particular concerning best practices for how to handle the vast quantities of data that the discipline generates. Much of this data has often ended up in physical ? or, more recently, digital ? archives and been left untouched for years, despite containing critical information. But as many recent research projects explore how best to unleash the potential of these archives through publication, digitization, and improved accessibility, attention is now turning to the best practices that should underpin this trend. In this volume, scholars turn their attention to how best to work with and shape archaeological archives, and what this means for the field as a whole. The majority of case studies here explore archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, some of which are conflict zones today. However, the contributions also showcase more broadly the depth of research on archaeological archives as a whole, and offer reflections upon the relationship between archaeological practices and archival forms. In so doing, the volume is able to offer a unique dialogue on best practices for the dissemination and synthetization of knowledge from archives more generally, whether physical or digital. ‎Ideology and Patronage in Byzantium. Dedicatory Inscriptions and Patron Images from Middle Byzantine Macedonia and Thrace‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 177 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:55 b/w, Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503605326.‎

‎Summary Based on the evidence of epigraphic material in combination with monumental painting, this book explores important dedicatory inscriptions (9th-beginning of the 13th c.) from Macedonia and Thrace, which have so far been investigated mainly from a philological-historical standpoint, thus neglecting the major issue of Middle Byzantine patronage. Through patron inscriptions and textual sources, the role and the motives of military officials in the patronage of defensive and fortification works, and the manner of publicizing them, are examined systematically. Patronage is looked at through the ideological messages that the donors endeavor to promote in a local society or monastic community, and which echo their relationship with the state and their views on education and faith. The new interpretations presented in this book result from the collation of historical, prosopographical, archaeological and visual data, which offer valuable evidence about military patronage, the relation of the donation to the personal life of the donor and his family, the spiritual life of monasticism and the building complex of the monastery, and the relationship between inscriptions, space and iconography. Interesting methodologically is the co-examination of the various categories of inscriptions in combination with historical texts and donor portraits, which opens up new avenues of research for the study of the interdisciplinary material in question. ‎Summary This volume, the third in the series MediTo, investigates the changing landscapes of Tuscany during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Through a selection of thematic case studies, presented initially during the second International workshop held in Paganico (Grosseto, Italy) in June 2019 and here further developed, the volume explores the concepts of settlement, economic, and societal changes in both Tuscany and its broader Mediterranean context over the course of several centuries. Together, the contributions gathered here showcase how cities and rural settlements, when studied in their archaeological and historical context, shed light on a dynamic landscape in which natural resources played a crucial role in defining the success or later abandonment of sites. ‎Summary Doreen Waugh was a native Shetlander and a well-renowned scholar of Old Norse and Gaelic place-names in Northern Scotland and the Northern Isles. Not only did Waugh's research significantly advance scholarly understanding of the 'Viking' settlement of the North Atlantic, her generosity with both her time and knowledge inspired and motivated a wide range of scholars from a variety of disciplines, from archaeology and history to historical geography, linguistics, and place-name studies. Based on ? and written in tribute to ? Waugh's work, this interdisciplinary volume draws together essays covering Northern Scotland, the Northern Isles, and beyond, both during and after the early medieval period. The contributions gathered here draw on Waugh's wider-ranging research interests to offer a range of novel insights into the many communities, cultures, and customs that have characterized and connected the Northern Isles and their North Atlantic neighbours. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 366 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:83 b/w, 92 col., 23 tables b/w., 61 maps b/w, 8 maps color, Language(s):English. ISBN 9782503597751.‎

‎Summary The fortified hilltop town of Capalbiaccio is a lost Etruscan settlement, a site that developed out of prehistory to become an important colony and grain provider for the Roman Empire, before being sacrificed to medieval intrigue and conquest by the Republic of Siena. The site, together with the castle of Tricosto, was first excavated forty-five years ago, but the results were never published. Then, in recent years, archaeologist Michelle Hobart was invited to explore the area with a new team and employ the latest techniques of remote sensing to explore the landscape and fortifications. The results of both explorations are presented here for the first time in this volume, which combines the invasive and non-invasive approaches of two generations of archaeologists to reveal what attracted settlers to this site, from the inhabitants of the late Bronze Age through to the most important families of medieval Tuscany. This book employs the best of the latest geophysical techniques and time-tested approaches to ground the history of Capalbiaccio, and to narrate how the fate of this small village was inextricably linked to regional and national networks, as control of the territory and the settlement's reason for being evolved over time. ‎End of the Kura-Araxes Phenomenon. The Chrono-Cultural Aspect of the EB/MB Transition in the South Caucasus‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, xviii + 338 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:182 b/w, 28 col., 19 tables b/w., 14 maps b/w, 7 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503606736.‎

‎Summary This thematic volume focuses on the demise of the Kura-Araxes culture and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age, a period between about 2600 and 2000 cal BC that saw the gradual disappearance of millennia-long traditions in the region. Specialists reassess the chrono-cultural attribution of several complexes in the region, together with the absolute chronology of the whole sequence. Through this approach, the volume offers a nuanced insight into the changes and continuities of a crucial period between the Early and Middle Bronze Age. The chapters gathered together here also explore the abandonment of long-established settlements, the production of lavishly endowed funerary complexes, testament to the emergence of growing inequalities in society, and the adoption of a far more mobile way of life as revealed by archaeology. ‎Byzantine Attica. An Archaeology of Settlement and Landscape (4th-12th Centuries)‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 664 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:90 b/w, 106 col., 11 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503611204.‎

‎Summary Attica, the region which surrounds Athens (Greece) is a key area for understanding the transformation of the ancient Roman world to its Medieval successor in the eastern Mediterranean. Located at a crossroads for land and maritime communications, being well populated, carrying a thorough administrative organization and a heavy cultural and religious tradition, the region participated in the broader historic evolutions from the 4th to the 12th centuries. Moreover, Attica stands out in contemporary historic and archaeological research due to its very intensive field research, starting in the 19th century and culminating since the 1960s, through rescue excavation and systematic studies. The outcome of this multi-faceted research on field and monuments which concerns the 4th to 12th centuries forms the backbone of the present volume. Stepping beyond this compilation, however, this study proceeds into being a synthesis of evidence on settlement patterns, road communications, defensive works, religious activities and burial habits. These topics are underpinned by aspects which belong to the longue dur e, geography and the natural environment, which are considered as crucial to the understanding of the Byzantine history. In short, the present book covers as many aspects of the studied area as possible, aiming to show the potential of regional studies for the history and archaeology of Late Antiquity and Byzantium. ‎Summary The roles played by women in history, and even the very idea of what it is to be female, have always been in flux, changing over centuries, between cultures, and in response to diverse social and economic parameters. Even today, women's roles and women's rights continue to face changes and pressures. In establishing the series Women of the Past: Testimonies from Archaeology and History, the ambition is to build on the profound theoretical and empirical developments that have taken place over the last fifty years of gender-focused research and to explore them in a contemporary context. The aim of this series is to shed light on not just the outstanding and extraordinary women who were trendsetters of their time, but also the not quite so outstanding women, often overshadowed by outstanding men, and the ordinary women, those who simply went about their everyday life and kept their world turning in their own quiet way. This edited volume, Women of the Past, Issues for the Present, is the inaugural volume of the series and shows the wide span of the series chronologically, geographically, and socially in terms of the research presented. From Roman slaves to Viking women, and from medieval wet-nurses to the nineteenth-century wives who supported their archaeologist husbands on excavation, this groundbreaking volume opens a new vista in our understanding of the past. ‎Summary The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and M nster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash ? the highest point within the walled city ? and this volume is the sixth in a series of books presenting the team's final results. In this volume, a wide range of miscellaneous items discovered in the Northwest Quarter are presented, ranging from prehistoric lithics to Ottoman pipes. Material finds covered include stone sculpture, utensils, and inscriptions, as well as bone objects, spindle whorls, and bread stamps, while some scientific analyses of jewellery and terracotta figurines complement the studies. These chapters ensure that all finds from the Northwest Quarter ? no matter how small ? are made available to researchers, with the contributions gathered here offering unique new insights into the material groups from Gerasa, later Jerash, and into the lives of the population of the city from a longue dur e perspective. ‎Summary The famous oasis city of Palmyra, located in the Syrian Desert, has long been the subject of scholarly research; and over the last decade, it has been the focus of three key projects based at Aarhus University in Denmark. Together, these projects have yielded results that have shed new light on Palmyra and have profoundly changed what we know about both the city itself, and its place in the wider Roman Empire, through a focus on sculptural production and the sustainability and economy that underpinned this, urban development, excavation history, and legacy data. This volume, based on a conference organized under the auspices of the Palmyra research projects in Aarhus, draws together papers that reflect on our understanding of Palmyra up to now, and pave the way for new lines of enquiry. Experts in the field engage with discussions of best practice, offer new perspectives on the city, its society, and its environs, and outline approaches that will allow research to continue to break new ground in our understanding of Palmyra. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 275 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:34 b/w, 16 col., 5 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503600567.‎

‎Summary Adriaan Verhulst's The Rise of Cities in North-West Europe (1999) is the last comprehensive work written by a single author on the urban genesis and spatial developments of cities in the medieval Low Countries. Since then, monographs, specialised studies and articles have been published on various cities and towns, while urban archaeologists have carried out numerous excavations. Much new knowledge has been gained, yet many gaps and the need for comparative overviews remain. Twenty-five years after Verhulst's synthesis, The Rise of Cities Revisited takes a fresh look at the origins and developments of cities and towns in the Low Countries between the tenth and the sixteenth centuries, critically assesses progress made in scholarship and outlines future directions for research. The chapters of the book are written by senior and junior specialists from various fields, including medieval history, historical geography, economic history, archaeology and building history. The Rise of Cities Revisited presents a state of the art and provides scholars with tools to study this complex subject in future. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction Bram Vannieuwenhuyze 2. ‎Summary The Early Bronze Age site of Jebel al-Mutawwaq, located on a hill overlooking the Zarqa River in Jordan, was a thriving centre of population from the second half of the fourth millennium into the third millennium BCE. During this time, the settlement developed both in population and social complexity, undergoing the beginnings of an urbanization process that fundamentally changed the relationship between this community of the Transjordanian Highlands with the surrounding landscape, until it was completely abandoned around 2900 BCE. This volume offers a new assessment of the site by combining data from the first surveys of the site, under a Spanish team led by J. A. Fernandez-Tresguerres, with the new results from six seasons of excavations led by teams from Perugia in Italy, and San Esteban in Spain. In doing so, this work sheds new light on this walled settlement and its huge megalithic necropolises, and offers a fresh understanding of the site. ‎Summary This fifth volume of a collection devoted to the interdisciplinary meetings held one every two years at K ltepe, ancient Kane?, brings together eighteen contributions dedicated to the archaeology and history of this Central Anatolian site and its surroundings. Each chapter within the volume presents the results of current research into K ltepe, thus continuing the holistic approach first demonstrated in earlier volumes of the K ltepe International Meetings sub-series of revitalizing one of the most important cultural centres of early Anatolia and of emphasising its importance as a pilot site for interdisciplinary studies. Drawing on K ltepe's unique textual and archaeological data, the studies gathered here are organized into four key thematic sections devoted respectively to politics, law and religion; women, family and correspondence; human and animal skeletons; and to the most recent archaeological excavations in K ltepe covering a period from the Chalcolithic to Hellenistic times. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 450 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9789603710899.‎

‎Summary Ancient polychromy speaks a language of ?the visible? and ?the invisible?, through signs of pigments, brushstrokes and forms. Another reminder of our classical past, colour is an inherent component of artistic creation, inspiration and imagination. New sophisticated technologies, as well as the development of interdisciplinary studies over these past decades, have stimulated the collection and evaluation of numerous scientific data from in-situ investigation of polychrome and painted documents, and have challenged our understanding of the complexity and function of ancient painting materials and techniques. The present volume is another contribution to the ongoing exploration of the rich history of colour in the classical world; an exploration which builds on previous knowledge and opens up new horizons for a more extended understanding of the aesthetics and meaning of Greek and Roman art. It includes fifteen papers that move from Archaic and Classical Greece to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and deal with colour on monumental architecture, marble statues and reliefs, wooden and terracotta statuettes, stone sarcophagi, paintings on stone and plaster, and pigments as raw materials. ‎Summary The volume Strapped for Cash: Needy Soldiers, Reluctant Authorities. Studies on Military Payments in Greek and Roman Antiquity includes eight (8) studies focusing on the question of the payment of soldiers and mercenaries by the issuing authorities in Greek and Roman antiquity. The studies in the volume discuss the use of coinage in relation to the salaries of the troops, but also in relation to the daily needs of the soldiers, both in peacetime and during war operations. The scarcity of sources dealing with the payment of troops leads to interesting methodological approaches, the results of which illuminate aspects of the wider economic and military history. The volume examines the tripartite relationship of Money-Payment-Military activities, through a broad chronological and geographical spectrum covering the period from the Classical period to Roman Imperial times, starting from Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula and reaching to the East TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Authors Panagiotis P. ‎Summary Cet ouvrage s'int resse de curieux petits vases qui ont la particularit de pr senter un bec sur leur panse et de se trouver principalement dans des tombes d'enfants. ‎New Approaches to the Materiality of Text in the Ancient Mediterranean. From Monuments and Buildings to Small Portable Objects‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 262 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:119 b/w, 18 col., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601564.‎

‎Summary In recent years, the study of epigraphy and ancient writings has undergone a 'material turn', as scholars have increasingly looked beyond just the contents of written sources to also focus on their broader material and visual contexts as a way of exploring the layers of different meanings that can attach to written evidence. Taking this interdisciplinary approach as its starting point, this volume draws together contributions from specialists in different fields in order to analyze text-bearing objects and monuments from across the ancient Mediterranean world. From texts inscribed on large stone monuments and buildings, clay, or metal tablets, to writings on papyrus and parchment rolls, jewellery, vases, coins, and textiles, writing on different materials had manifold possibilities. The case studies gathered here examine novel approaches to the creation and display of inscribed objects, as well as to the ways in which such items were approached and perceived by people during a chronological period ranging from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. In doing so, the volume sheds new light not only on the interplay between ancient texts, text-bearers, and viewers within their wider spatial and physical contexts, but also on the possibilities opened by exploring the material aspects of writing through interdisciplinary approaches. ‎Roman Names in the Cyclades. Part ?I‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 504 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:47 col., Language: English. ISBN 9789603710776.‎

‎Summary The second volume of the study on the Roman names in the Cyclades completes the contribution to the social history of a marginal zone of the Roman world. It includes prosopographic catalogues of bearers of Roman names attested on Amorgos, Anaphe, Ios, Naxos, Oliaros, Paros, Pholegandros, Thera and attestations connected generally with the Cyclades, but not with a specific island. An extensive introduction presents the historical context and a synthetic overview of the diffusion of Roman names and citizenship in the Cyclades. The book is enriched by two synthetic contributions written by specialists. One of them (El. Sverkos) focuses on the origin of certain characteristic names and the other (P. Doukellis) on the study of 'spatiality' and the sociological parameters of the diffusion of the names as a method for perceiving the complex mechanisms for the construction of personal identities. This work is also a contribution to the epigraphy of the Cyclades, as the prosopographic catalogues were based on autopsy of the published and unpublished epigraphic material, relocation of stones and research in the archive of the Inscriptiones Graecae (Berlin). This method yielded hitherto unknown prosopographic data as well as new readings and interpretations of epigraphic texts which had not been studied for over a century. As part of the documentation, 47 plates include photos of several inscriptions or their squeezes, which are published here for the first time. ‎Summary In the Late Republican period, Rome underwent monumental changes. Within the city, numerous building projects were undertaken by the wealthy and politically powerful as they jostled for power, while further afield, wars were fought and Rome's authority gradually expanded into new territories. One of the key players in this field was Julius Caesar, who took advantage of the fluid and fast-changing political and military alliances to position himself in the centre of power. During this time, he became the first to design a forum ? the Forum Iulium, now known as Caesar's Forum ? in his family's name. Today, this site, in the very heart of Rome, is home to The Caesar's Forum Project, where excavations have yielded new knowledge about both the long history of Rome, and the broader context of its global history and cultural heritage. Taking this project as its starting point, this volume draws together scholars working both on the excavations, and on Caesar more generally, to shed new light on the often enigmatic figure of Julius Caesar. The chapters gathered here offer insights into remains and sources from both the time of Caesar and from later periods, giving new perspectives not only on his life and death, but also on the central role that he has ever since continued to play in historiography since. ‎Odds and Ends. Unusual Elements in Palmyrene Iconography‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, xiv + 180 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:45 b/w, 63 col., 1 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503603964.‎

‎Summary The funerary art that was produced in Roman Palmyra, a caravan city in the Syrian steppe desert, is rightly world-renowned. The frontal depictions of the deceased, featured in torso-length portraits, and the large-scale banqueting scenes are iconic, and lent an added mystique by the absence of any literary sources that might aid in their interpretation. But while from a distance these exquisite portraits might seem rather formulaic, when examining more closely, it is clear that these scenes reveal a surprisingly rich and varied funerary d cor. Alongside the more popular iconographic choices are singular scenes, motifs, and elements that deviate from the norm, while new patterns and connections between Palmyra and its surroundings are identifiable. This volume, which draws on the vast materials gathered under the auspices of the Palmyra Portrait Project directed by Professor Rubina Raja, explores the 'oddities' raised by the Palmyrene corpus; it examines one-off scenes or elements, and unusual or unparalleled iconographical choices, and it questions how and why such unusual choices should be interpreted. The chapters gathered here not only focus on these visual 'hapax legomena' in Palmyra, but also explore the city's connections with the art of Roman centres to the west, as well as the nearby Hellenistic city states, regional centres of production, and Parthian and Persian sites to the east. Through this approach, the authors engage with the visual richness and sheer amount of choice that existed in Palmyrene funerary art, while also providing unique insights into the knowledge culture that existed within Palmyrene society. ‎Summary This book presents the results of a research project realised in 2012-14 in the surroundings of the Roman legionary base at Novae (Moesia inferior), transformed in late Antiquity into a civilian town. The publication also contains material from surveys conducted in 1977 and in 2000, which have so far only been partly published. Various research methods were implemented jointly to enable at least a partial reconstruction of the settlement's character. These included geophysical prospection, field walking, and the mapping of metal finds, supplemented by a series of analyses, such as the testing of plant pollen and macroremains, with the aim of providing as complete a reconstruction as possible of the past environment in the fortress' surroundings. We attempted to record both the finds originating from earlier epochs and those from later ones, in order to provide a more complete reconstruction of the settlement landscape and the character of the site. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction and acknowledgments I The site and its surroundings (Agnieszka Tomas) II Introductory remarks on civil settlement near Roman legionary bases and the case of Novae III The present and the past environment (Magdalena Moskal-del Hoyo, Renata Stachowicz-Rybka, Agnieszka Tomas and Hanna Winter) 1. ‎Multi-Disciplinary Approaches to Medieval Brittany, 450?1200. Connections and Disconnections‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xii + 376 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:7 b/w, 13 col., 2 tables b/w., 17 maps b/w, 3 maps color, Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503601106.‎

‎Summary While it is well-established that Brittany and the Insular world were closely linked during the medieval period, the precise nature of these connections continues to spark debate. Was there a significant migration in the fifth century, or were the connections more multi-faceted and enduring than medieval accounts suggest? And how might we triangulate the Atlantic connections with other influences on medieval Brittany, including those from the Carolingian world? Drawing together research that was first presented at the conference 'Brittany and the Atlantic Archipelago: Contact, Myth and History 450-1200', held in Cambridge in December 2017, this volume seeks to present new and ground-breaking research into both Brittany and its broader European context during the medieval period. The chapters gathered here range across various disciplines, including textual history, archaeology, hagiography, onomastics, and the study of liturgical evidence, offering new insights into our understanding of medieval Brittany, as well as drawing out particular connections (and disconnections) between Brittany and its neighbours. ‎Exchange and Reuse in Roman Palmyra. Examining Economy and Circularity‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, x + 132 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:56 b/w, 15 col., 9 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503603421.‎

‎Summary How did ancient cities like Palmyra survive? How did their people produce and manage the resources required for both their short- and long-term needs? Were their methods circular or wasteful? What materials did they reuse, and how? What form did their routine exchanges take? The material culture of Palmyra offers unique potential for addressing these questions in a concrete way. While the city is most famous for its long-distance commerce, a century of excavations at the site, together with a series of recent print publications and digital enterprises, have provided scholars with unprecedented amounts of material objects, among them inscriptions, statues, tesserae, coins, glass and metal finds, textiles, and other objects, all of which shed new light on Palmyra's economy and how its inhabitants consumed, maintained, exchanged, or reused key resources. Drawing together contributions from leading researchers on ancient Palmyra, this volume explores various dimensions of the city's economy from fresh angles. The chapters gathered here feature new methodologies for determining the size of Palmyra's population and for understanding the nature of coins in local exchanges, offer reassessments of the Palmyrene institutions that underpinned economic exchange, examine how Palmyrenes used and reused materials, and consider the forms of exchange and reuse that governed the building activity of Palmyrenes after the city's Roman heyday and within areas of Egypt.
