Le present dictionnaire, richement illustre, muni de cartes, plans et tableaux chronologiques, constitue donc un complement necessaire aux encyclopedies de l'Antiquite classique, greco-romaine, du monde biblique et des cultures orientales de la Mesopotamie, de l'Egypte et de l'Anatolie. Il ne se substitue toutefois a aucun d'eux, car il porte essentiellement sur les sites pheniciens et puniques, connus par les sources historiques ou les fouilles archeologiques, sur leur histoire, leur culture et leur religion, sur l'architecture, l'art et l'artisanat, ainsi que l'heritage spirituel de ce monde disparu et si proche: croyances, langue etroitement apparentee a l'hebreu biblique, alphabet qui est a l'origine du notre, documents ecrits qui semblent des ancetres de nos dedicaces, epitaphes ou plaques commemoratives. Des notices sont egalement consacrees a la memoire des savants qui ont apporte une contribution notable au progres des etudes phenico-puniques.

The checklist also mentions all known related material, and where possible, photographs of this material have been added. As far as the related material is concerned, the relevant publications are also mentioned. The related material includes direct designs, like drawings or engravings, and drawings and roundels which belong to either the same series or which are copies of these series.The present volume covers the Province of Antwerp. The publication of the checklists for the provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders (Vol. 2) and Limburg and Flemish Brabant (Vol.3) are planned for the near future. An inventory of the roundels in The Netherlands is also foreseen. In Late Antiquity, Ptolemy?s treatise on cartography (second century AD) was yet to achieve the recognition that Ptolemy had hoped for, despite relatively wide distribution. However, in the early Middle Ages, knowledge of the Geographia did not disappear completely, owing mainly to treatises on astronomy translated from Arabic. The Latin version produced at the beginning of the 15th century did not, therefore, have the revolutionary character that is often attributed to it. The work that made it possible to understand the universe of Antiquity as it appeared in the classics was well received from the ?literary? point of view. But the astrologists and scientists educated in universities were instrumental, in a way that has, until now, been little studied, in analysing the contradictions between the Ptolemy?s representation of the universe and other representations that were still current and accepted. The long process of the modernisation of Ptolemy?s vision entered a decisive phase at the beginning of the second half of the fifteenth century following the synthesis between humanism and natural philosophy. It continued until the beginning of the sixteenth century, considering the modes of representation (anachronistically called ?projections?), retaining the concept of the influence of celestial bodies on the sublunar sphere, a feature of conceptions of the world held since Antiquity that the work of Ptolemy justified as best. This book questions a certain number of commonplaces of cultural history. It is based on the first hand analysis of Greek and Roman texts and maps from highly diverse intellectual backgrounds.
