A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there, the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos, the Ornament of Ionia, Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern, integrated history of the city, collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city, demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there, and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence, Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy, oligarchy, tyranny, and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. C. , the western Anatolian region of Lydia was home to a distinctive local tradition of ashlar masonry construction. The earliest datable example of fine stone masonry in the environs of Sardis, the capital of the Lydian empire, is the tomb of King Alyattes, who died in ca. 560 B. C. Contemporary monuments include a city gate and monumental terraces. Alyattes' son Croesus was overthrown by the Persians in 547 B. C. , but the Lydian building tradition survived in chamber tombs at Sardis and throughout Lydia. This richly illustrated volume examines the monuments of Sardis and environs in the context of contemporary developments in Lydia and throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. Jusquau IIIe siècle de notre ère. Les témoignages livrés par le sous-sol révèlent la présence de maisons dès le milieu du VIe siècle. Dautres habitations leur succèdent durant la période républicaine. Lune delles est achevée depuis peu lorsque, dans les années 30 du Ier siècle avant notre ère, un personnage important fait bâtir une domus luxueuse qui gomme tous les aménagements antérieurs. Moins de cent ans plus tard, un tremblement de terre provoque leffondrement de cette demeure et, peu après, le relief va être remodelé par la construction dune grande terrasse artificielle sur laquelle se dressera un corps du palais impérial flavien. Mais les remblais employés pour réaliser cet aménagement gigantesque subissent des tassements, imposant dintervenir à de multiples reprises tout au long du IIe siècle pour réparer et transformer ce quartier de la résidence impériale. Un incendie - celui de 191 vraisemblablement - signe sa fin et, rasé, il laisse place au temple dédié pendant quelques années à Sol Elagabalus, un sanctuaire qui pourrait avoir remplacé un édifice plus ancien. La succession des événements a été établie à partir des résultats recueillis dans lun des secteurs du chantier de fouille réalisé par lÉcole française de Rome en collaboration avec la Soprintendenza archeologica de 1985 à 1998. Lexposition des résultats est précédée par un rappel des circonstances qui ont présidé au lancement du projet de recherche, ainsi que des solutions adoptées sur le terrain puis au cours des autres phases du travail.

The Epigraphic Landscape presents a series of case-studies in which a new generation of scholars examines the significance of interpreting inscriptions in terms of their topographical context and physical appearance. Some chapters focus on a genre of inscription – honorific building and funerary – whilst others discuss a single text such as the Rapino Bronze and the album of Canusium. This approach reveals the contribution of inscribed monuments to the transformation of towns and countryside and the impact of Rome on the landscape of the rest of Italy. The integration of epigraphic literary archaeological and topographical sources suggests new ways of looking at Roman colonization in Umbria. The transformation of the epigraphic landscape of its surrounding region challenges current views on the date of Lavinium’s decline. Similar inscriptions from Puteoli provide a starting-point for exploring the activities of the super-élite of Campania. By trying to reconstruct the motivations behind inscriptions several contributors reveal the subjectivity of these texts – such as the factors governing the appearance of gladiators’ tombstones – and warn against adopting too literal an interpretation of these sources even if inscribed in stone.

Else very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; After an introduction of the Royal Necropolis of Sidon, examines the faces and finally the lid of the Alexander Sarcophagus in detail. At the end of the book its decorative style and ornamentation is described. The Alexander Sarcophagus has been a major attraction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum ever since it was found in the late nineteenth century. Although named after Alexander the Great, the sarcophagus was not his, but was probably that of Abdalonymos, the last king of Sidon (Saida). Abdalonymos owed his throne to Alexander and the latter's close friend and general, Hephaistion. The subject matter of the reliefs decorating the sarcophagus suggests that Abdalonymos was here commemorating his benefactors; the sarcophagus thus takes its name, not from the ruler who commissioned it, but from its iconography; 64 pages
