‎POMPEII AD 79 The Treasure of Rediscovery‎

‎Some of the DJ has adhered to base of spine. Else very minor shelfwear. DJ has tears, rubbing and some moisture stains. DJ spine is sunned and faded. ; An Official Publication of the American Museum of Natural History, New York; 305 pages; Oversized. This is the story of man's restoration of Pompeii to the world from the earliest excavations to the most recent soundings. Each step of the archaeological history brought about a clearer picture of life as it was. The discoveries also had their impact on the times -- "Pompeian fever" swept 18th and 19th century Europe. This is also the story of the men who dominated the digs -- the initial probings of Prince d'Elbeuf, the adventures -- amorous and otherwise -- of the Hamiltons, and of the dedicated Italians such as Fiorelli and Spinazzola who eventually brought systematic order to the digs. As a pictorial reinforcement to the text, the book presents a display of views and overviews, reconstructions and artistic interpretations, line drawings and etchings, engravings, vintage photography, and contemporary photographs.‎

‎THE CAMBRIDGE ANCIENT HISTORY Volume of Plates II Prepared by C. T. Seltman‎

‎Ex-library copy (non-circulating reference) with usual stamps, call numbers. Else VG. ; Cambridge Ancient History Series; 121 pages; This book of plates can be used either as a companion to Volume IV or as an independent, illustrated account of the period, and of the evidence of Greek civilization and culture as it encountered the Persian empire and struggled for its freedom. Detailed commentary accompanies a full pictoral survey of the art and archaeology of the Persian empire and its provinces, from Thrace to India. The section on Greece concentrates on late Archaic Athens, immediately before the Persian wars, and considers cultural progress as evidence of various aspects of Greek life and society. The fortunes of the Western Greek colonial area and of the Etruscan and Italic peoples are similarly treated. The volume concludes with a study of the invention of coinage and its use throughout Greece and Persia.‎

‎RODANUM A Study of the Roman Settlement At Aardenburg and its Metal Finds‎

‎Very light shelfwear else fine. ; Beneath the surface of Aardenburg, a small town in the south-western part of the Netherlands, lie the remains of a Roman settlement that is presumed to have been named Rodanum. Extensive archaeological excavations from the late 1950s to the late 1980s revealed that the settlement was similar in size or even larger than the modern town. Its centre was formed by a large castellum-type fortification wall that enclosed several large stone buildings. The settlement was connected to the sea by a natural watercourse that defined its economic and logistical importance in the region. Rodanum's military function was to secure the regional coast against attacks by Germanic tribes via the North Sea, which occurred around AD 175. It continued to be inhabited until the late third century or the beginning of the fourth century, after which the settlement was deserted until the early Middle Ages. The first part of this study provides an overview of Aardenburg during the Roman period, in which its economic and military functions within the region are explored. In particular, the military and civilian character of the town is discussed. The second part contains a study of the metal objects and aims to present significant additional information. This part concludes with a critical review of the current state of research at this site. ; 180 pages‎
