Anna moved into the White House with her children after this first divorce. Anna’s second marriage was to Clarence John Boettiger a journalist who she met while aiding her father’s second run for the presidency. OGUZ TEKIN, CHRISTOPHER H ROOSEVELT, ENGIN AKYUREK
Philanthropy in Anatolia through the ages: The First International Suna and Inan Kirac Symposium on Mediterranean Civilization - March 26-29 2019 Antalya.
Istanbul: AKMED: Koç Üniversitesi Suna & Inan Kiraç Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Arastirma Merkezi 2020. Hardcover. New. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Original bdg. HC. 4to. 30 x 21 cm. Articles in English. iv 262 p. color and b/w ills. The articles of this volume offer a rich diversity of perspectives on philanthropy as practiced in Anatolia over some 2500 years. From such an extensive set of investigations one would expect to compose a coherent synthetic statement on the nature of Anatolian philanthropy as well as some proposals for how to develop further a meaningful program of research on the topic. It turns out that the latter is far easier than the former; although this volume contains twenty original studies they do not ultimately clarify either the definition of philanthropy or any essential aspect of Anatolia. The reflections below address first what might be called "the problem with philanthropy" and "the ambiguity of Anatolia." Once these waters are sufficiently muddied it nonetheless emerges that a program of research on the topic is possible and even promising. Foreword Introductory Comments: Philanthropy in Anatolia through the Ages. Greco-Roman Philanthropy. Peary Robert E. Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt
The North Pole.
London: Hodder & Stoughton 1910. Deluxe signed limited edition of Peary's illustrated account of his journey to the North Pole number 4 of only 500 copies signed by Peary and Captain R. A. Bartlett. Thick quarto publisher's original full vellum decorated in gilt top edge gilt illustrated with a large folding map printed in color four black-and-white mounted photogravures and 112 tipped-in photographic plates. Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. In very good condition. This dramatic account includes the preparations organization and the march to the Pole. "According to Peary they reached the Pole on April 6 and remained there 30 hours to verify their position. They reached land again at Cape Columbia on the 23rd and two days later arrived at the ship. Immediately after Peary's arrival the Cook/Peary controversy broke out as a result of Cook's almost simultaneous announcement that he had reached the Pole one year earlier. Eventually Cook's claim was rejected as fraudulent by most commentators and Peary's priority was widely acknowledged. However Peary's claim too has frequently been questioned and controversy continues even now. The National Geographic Society commissioned a new examination of Peary's route by the Navigation Foundation of Maryland which reported in Peary's favor" Holland 475. LE DECOUVERTE DU POLE NORD en 1909 sous le patronage du Club Arctique Parry. Avec une introduction de Théodore Roosevelt et une Préface de Gilbert H. Grosvenor
Hodder & Stoughton 1911. Cloth. Good. 1st French Edition; French Text. 343pages illustrated frontispiece 32 duo tone photographs 32 monotone photographs1 folding coloured map. Blue cloth covers with gilt titling. Previous owners pencil signature to front end paper. Shelfware spine sunned rips to cloth on back cover. Contents clean tight and bright. Immediately after his return controversy broke out due to Frederick Cook's announcement just 4 days before Peary's of his own attainment of the Pole on 23rd September 1908. The North Pole contains no hint of the ensuing - and often acrimonious - debate concerning these competing claims. At the time Peary came to be regarded as offering the surer claim. San Francisco: Printed for William Andrews Clark Jr. by John Henry Nash 1928. Slim folio 9 by 13 inches and slim octavo original parchment and blue paper boards top edge gilt uncut original slipcase. $2600.Limited edition one of only 250 copies of renowned printer John Henry Nash's publication of Pope's Essay on Criticism comprising both a beautifully printed folio volume and an octavo facsimile of poet and dramatist John Drinkwater's copy of Pope's Essay in original slipcase. FDR's copy with his numbered library booklabels and autograph provenance inscriptions by Eleanor Roosevelt reading: ""Franklin D. Roosevelt his book. ER"" and ""FDR. ER.""An Essay on Criticism 1711 is often considered to be Alexander Pope's second major poem. ""This poem which has an intellectual brilliance and eloquence of a kind required by neither pastoral nor epic deviates into a different track that of the familiar discursive Horatian poem something like Horace's Ars poetica Vida's Renaissance Poetica and the late seventeenth-century English rhyming essays of the earls of Mulgrave and Roscommon. Pope's art here is essentially diplomatic: the intellectual and historical reach of the poem is amazing but it seeks to dramatize only to modify and reconcile contrary views"" DNB. This copy comprising both a beautiful folio printing and a smaller octavo facsimile of poet John Drinkwater's copy of the first edition including a reproduction of his signature and edition notes on the front free endpaper was printed in a limited edition of 250 copies by artisan San Francisco printer John Henry Nash for private distribution by philanthropist Williams Andrew Clark Jr. son of the senator and copper baron. This copy is unnumbered. This copy was given to Franklin D. Roosevelt and bears his numbered library booklabels. Between the death of FDR and the donation of Hyde Park to the National Park Service many of the books in FDR's personal library were distributed to family members. Ultimately many found their way to auction. Books that were put up for auction by Eleanor Roosevelt were all initialed by her for provenance; this is one such copy.Only a very light scattered foxing to folio volume a few slight rub marks and mild toning to both volumes original slipcase with only light wear. President Franklin D Roosevelt & Prime Minister Winston S Churchill
The Atlantic Charter Broadside
Washington DC: Office of War Information 1943. Poster. This original 1943 Second World War broadside features the text of the Atlantic Charter designed by W. A. Dwiggins printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office and issued by the U.S. Office of War Information. The 28 x 20 inches 71.1 x 50.8 cm broadside is creased once vertically and thrice horizontally to produce eight panels as folded for original distribution Condition is better than very good suitable for framing. The paper is clean and complete with no indication that it has ever been framed or hung. At the upper edge of the blank verso two pieces of archival tape are fitted one to the top of the vertical fold one to the center left the archival tape stabilizing short closed tears and causing them to disappear. The broadside shows minimal overall age-toning and a trivial hint of soiling to the right and left bottom edges.

Americas wartime propaganda agency the Office of War Information OWI was founded by President Roosevelts Executive Order on 13 June 1942 and dissolved in August 1945. OWIs mandate to sustain patriotic fervor exemplified the uneasy relationship between democratic ideals and wartime necessity. In the words of an OWI spokesman OWI posters helped ensure that
every man woman and child should be reached and moved by the message. In designing this OWI broadside American typographer book designer and illustrator William Addison Dwiggins 1880-1956 joined a cadre of prominent artists including Norman Rockwell Ben Shahn and James Montgomery Flagg who contributed to OWI efforts. Dwiggins used a style that echoes historic proclamations fitting for a document containing some of the twentieth centurys most aspirational words.

In August 1941 British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill braved the Battle of the Atlantic to voyage by warship to Placentia Bay Newfoundland where he secretly met with U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Their agenda included setting constructive goals for the post-war world even as the struggle against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan was still very much undecided and the U.S. had yet to formally enter the war. The eight principles to which they agreed became known as the Atlantic Charter. That it had little legal validity did not detract from its value
Coming from the two great democratic leaders of the day
the Atlantic Charter created a profound impression on the embattled Allies
a message of hope
and
the promise of a world organization based on the enduring verities of international morality. UN In addition to encapsulating the Allies postwar aspirations and catalyzing formation of the United Nations the Atlantic Charter testified to the remarkable personal relationship between FDR and Churchill.

Support for the principles of the Atlantic Charter
came from a meeting of ten governments in London shortly after Mr. Churchill returned from his ocean rendezvous. This declaration was signed on September 24 by the USSR and the nine governments of occupied Europe: Belgium Czechoslovakia Greece Luxembourg the Netherlands Norway Poland Yugoslavia and by the representatives of General de Gaulle of France. Nonetheless Atlantic Charter principles were remote from the realities of war in August 1941. Even after Newfoundland to Churchills frustration America had still made no commitments and was no nearer to war than before the ship board meeting. Gilbert VI p.1176 In his live broadcast from Chequers on August 24 Churchill modestly introduced the Atlantic Charter thus:
a simple rough-and-ready war-time statement of the goal towards which the British Commonwealth and the United States mean to make their way
Not until December 1941 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor did America formally enter the war and not until October 1945 was the United Nations established embodying the lofty principles of the Atlantic Charter. Even then the Cold War was already nascent ensuring that a geo-political reality based on those noble principles would remain as remote as it was in Placentia Bay in August 1941. As it remains today.

Office of War Information unknown
