Eleanor Roosevelt
This I Remember signed by James Roosevelt eldest son of the author and President Franklin D. Roosevelt

New York: Harper & Brothers 1949. First edition. Hardcover. This first edition of Eleanor Roosevelts 1884-1962 memoir spanning her husbands governorship of New York to his death in 1945 at the beginning of his fourth presidential term is signed James Roosevelt by her son on the front free endpaper recto.

The binding is medium blue cloth with a dark blue spine label printed in gilt and bracketed by triple gilt rules and with Eleanor Roosevelts facsimile signature in black on the lower front cover. The contents feature deckled fore edges. An illustrated dust jacket in red gold white and black features a portrait of Eleanor by Yousuf Karsh on the front face.

Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners. The chief defects are light overall mottling of the cloth and minor shelf wear to extremities. The contents remain respectably bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks other than the authors sons signature. Lest there be any doubt FIRST EDITION is helpfully printed on the copyright page. Differential toning of the endpapers and pastedowns corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is unclipped retaining the original $4.50 front flap price and substantially complete with only fractional chipping to the joint and flap fold extremities. The jacket shows light overall scuffing mild spine toning and modest edge wear and is newly fitted with a clear removable archival cover.

James Roosevelt 1907-1991 was the eldest son of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. James made a substantial fortune in the insurance industry before serving as an aid to his father. During the Second World War James served in secret diplomatic missions before requesting reassignment to combat duty where he became a decorated U.S. Marine. James later served five terms as a U.S. Congressman from California 1955-1965 after which he became United States representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and subsequently an executive with the Investors Overseas Services before it collapsed after embezzlement. During his long life four marriages and sometimes scandal-plagued career James tried his hand at a number of professions including both Hollywood producer and author.

This I Remember picks up where Eleanors earlier memoir This Is My Story left off. What differentiates Eleanors biographies from those of many other prominent figures is that each word was actually composed by her. A favorable New York Times review said it is shockingly delightful to read a book which could have been written by absolutely no one else in the world than the great and important figure whose name is signed to it which is flavorful characteristic and moving. Prior to its publication through McCalls Eleanor offered the manuscript to Ladies Home Journal which profitably serialized This Is My Story. However the editors were dissatisfied with the writing in the manuscript and suggested that she take on a collaborator to write it. She declined and McCalls published it instead to commercial success.

When her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in 1932 Eleanor had already made a name for herself in Democratic politics. Eleanor decided to transform the hitherto mostly social and apolitical role of First Lady. And after her husbands death Eleanor did not withdraw into widowhood. It was her husbands successor President Harry S. Truman who called Eleanor First Lady of the World for her humanitarian work. Eleanor became the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and remained a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962. Transcending her role as mere first lady Eleanor became a fearless international champion of progressive causes and perhaps the most influential American woman of the twentieth century. Eleanor Roosevelt
This I Remember

"First Lady of the World" is how President Harry Truman referred to Eleanor Roosevelt. At roughly the same time J. Edgar Hoover thought Eleanor might be a Communist. But as author and intellectual Garry Wills wrote "there was nothing radical about her either in temperament or principle. She would not join in civil rights activities if they included civil disobedience."

Eleanor Roosevelt beautifully signed card with The White House Washington engraved in top right corner see picture. Card is very neatly mounted on half title page. Book is very good condition generally toned throughout and price clipped. Dust jacket also very good with tears on top of binding and smaller chips on bottom of binding. Front and back of dust jacket are in very good condition see pictures. Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.

"This I Remember" is Eleanor Roosevelt's recollections of the years preceding FDR's first term as Governor Of NYS to the day of his death during his 4th term as President of the United States. She is considered by many to be America's most inspiring and influential first lady. She stated "When you cease to make a contribution you begin to die."

The arrival of Eleanor Roosevelt as First Lady transformed the post into its current energetic activist incarnation. Despite leaving The White House more than 75 years ago Eleanor Roosevelt is still ranked first among all other women who have served as America's First Ladies.

Another of her most famous quotes was a remark she made to VP Harry Truman. Truman had been Vice President for 82 days when President Roosevelt died on April 12 1945. Truman presiding over the Senate as usual had just adjourned the session for the day and was preparing to have a drink in House Speaker Sam Rayburn's office when he received an urgent message to go immediately to the White House where Eleanor Roosevelt told him that her husband had died after a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Truman asked her if there was anything he could do for her; she replied "Is there anything we can do for you For you are the one in trouble now!"

Mrs. Roosevelt took up many different social and cultural causes during her travels across the nation holding press conferences hosting radio programs and writing newspaper columns along the way.

Harper & Brothers hardcover

Eleanor Roosevelt
This Is My Story signed by Eleanor Roosevelt
New York: Harper & Brothers 1937. First edition second printing. Hardcover. This is a signed first edition presumed second printing of the first of Eleanor Roosevelt’s biographical writings followed by 1949’s This I Remember and 1958’s On My Own. On the half title page below the printed title she signed “Eleanor Roosevelt” in black ink. The copyright page neither explicitly states “First Edition” nor makes mention of further printings. Since we have observed that the third printing was so-stated on the copyright page we speculate that this is a second printing of the first edition.

Condition is good plus in a good plus dust jacket. The light blue cloth binding is square tight and unfaded though slightly mottled with shelf wear including a few dents to the bottom edges and a hint of sunning to the edges where sun snuck past the dust jacket. The publisher’s name “HARPER” is ghosted onto the spine from the dust jacket. The contents are clean with no previous ownership marks and light spotting confined to the endpapers. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket front flap is neatly price-clipped but the jacket is otherwise substantially complete and respectably bright with only the slight color shift between the gold and blue fields on the spine and front face. The jacket shows edge wear and moderate overall scuffing most notably a roughly 1.25 x 1 inch 3.18 x 2.54 cm abrasion to the upper left of the front face not affecting any text or images. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover.

This first of Eleanor Roosevelt’s memoirs covers her early years and family up until the 1924 Democratic Convention and was originally serialized in Ladies’ Home Journal. The book was written in 1936 and published in 1937. Herein Eleanor simply and frankly discloses her personal narrative and gives cause and context to the liberal influence which anchored her life and politics.

Called “First Lady of the World” by President Truman for her humanitarian work Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 was the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962 and the longest-serving first lady of the United States.

When her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was running for president in the fall of 1932 as the likely election winner Eleanor had already independently made for herself a name in Democratic politics as a spokesperson for the newly enfranchised woman voter labor advocate in the midst of the Great Depression a vocal promoter of civil rights and the head of the Women’s Division of the Democratic National Committee since 1928. She feared her impending role as First Lady a heretofore purely social and apolitical role would necessitate a quieting of her convictions and force her to step down from her political positions; she even told friends that she would divorce FDR should he win rather than lose her independence.

After FDR’s unprecedented victory securing 42 of 48 states Eleanor made the decision to transform her new position rather than yield to it. She did so and in so doing “…she became a fearless international champion of progressive causes and perhaps the most influential American woman of the twentieth century.” ANB.

Eleanor’s famous partnership with Franklin D. Roosevelt ended with FDR’s death in April 1945 at the start of his fourth presidential term. Of that partnership Eleanor wrote in This I Remember “He might have been happier with a wife who had been completely uncritical… Nonetheless I think that I sometimes acted as a spur even though the spurring was not always wanted…” She could as easily be speaking of her relationship with the world which she loved as earnestly as she goaded undaunted by its challenges and disappointments.

Harper & Brothers hardcover
