In near fine condition. A Trip to Washington with Bobby and Betty is one of the more uncommon books by Roosevelt and one that is not often found signed or inscribed especially with such a nice association. Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political leader who used her influence as an active First Lady from 1933 to 1945 to promote the New Deal policies of her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as taking a prominent role as an advocate for civil rights. After her husband's death in 1945 she continued to be an internationally prominent author and speaker for the New Deal coalition. She was a suffragist who worked to enhance the status of working women although she opposed the Equal Rights Amendment because she believed it would adversely affect women. In the 1940s she was one of the co-founders of Freedom House and supported the formation of the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt founded the UN Association of the United States in 1943 to advance support for the formation of the UN. She was a delegate to the UN General Assembly from 1945 and 1952 a job for which she was appointed by President Harry S. Truman and confirmed by the United States Congress. During her time at the United Nations chaired the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Nicholas describes traveling by train from New York to Chicago with Theodore Edith and Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the election party. During the convention Nicholas describes meeting with Chicago Tribune reporter John Callan Cal O'Lauglin working with his colleague Charles P. Curtis for the Roosevelt campaign and the Progressive Party the theft of delegates by Taft Republicans and votes for Elihu Root. Also includes details on speeches given at the convention and the response from delegates. The account was constructed from diary entries and letters N. Roosevelt wrote to family members during the convention" . Also accompanying this piece is a typed letter signed Tls by Nicholas Roosevelt to William Roscoe Thayer author of "Theodore Roosevelt An Intimate Biography". Roosevelt is verifying some times that Thayer has inquired about. It appears that he was at factual odds with O. K. Davis who was also a participant in the Chicago 1912 events and wrote "Released For Publication". Nicholas has verified that Davis has been incorrect "and your reputation for veracity is saved". This limited edition is the fifth Christmas book issued by the White House covering 10 notable addresses from 1940-41. This copy is inscribed to John Aspinwall Roosevelt 1916-1981 and his wife Anne Clark. John Roosevelt was the youngest child of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. He attended Groton School and Harvard College graduating in 1938. Following in his father's footsteps John pursued a career in law earning his degree from Harvard Law School in 1940. During World War II he served in the United States Navy attaining the rank of lieutenant. After the war he practiced law in New York City focusing primarily on corporate law. John Aspinwall Roosevelt was also actively involved in various philanthropic endeavors throughout his life including serving on the boards of charitable organizations. He passed away in 1981. A crisp clean copy very near fine in the publisher's marbled boards with white vellum spine and applied gilt-stamped morocco spine label. Some foxing to the bottom of the vellum a few abrasions with minor losses to rear board and some tiny nicks to the spine label with no loss. Lacking the glassine jacket but with the publisher's slipcase dampstained at one corner and with the boards bowed inward; still sound. Else a superb example very good overall. First edition limited issue of 100 numbered and signed copies this is #29. Probably the rarest and most sought-after of the Roosevelt "Christmas books" this is #29 of 100 limited copies personally signed and hand-numbered by Roosevelt and additionally inscribed by him on the first free endpaper to his long-time friend colleague and confidante: "For Marvin H. McIntyre / with the affectionate regards of his old friend / Franklin D. Roosevelt / Christmas 1942."<br /> <br /> This was one of the last of FDR's annual "Christmas books" and it contains some of the most affecting and significant speeches delivered by him and his British counterpart Winston Churchill all during the first month of America's engagement in World War II. Among these are FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech formally seeking a declaration of war against Japan from Congress; his January 6 1942 State of the Union message; and Churchill's December 26 1941 address to the United States Congress. After fulfilling so many of his earlier promises in bringing stability and hope to the middle class in the wake of the Depression Roosevelt used these eloquent addresses to help shepherd a weary nation into perhaps its most significant military sacrifice fighting the menace of fascism and developing a cold but nevertheless open and important relationship with the Soviet Union. A fold-out facsimile of the "Declaration by United Nations" pledging global cooperation in combating the members of the Tripartite Pact appears after the president's speech on the subject near the rear of the volume.<br /> <br /> Examples of this Christmas book are extremely rare in commerce; many are treasured by the descendants of those who had received them personally as gifts from Roosevelt and those that have sold at auction have attained very healthy results often surpassing the high estimate. This copy is especially significant because it is inscribed to McIntyre who first met and befriended Roosevelt when they both worked for the Secretary of the Navy during the First World War. He shared day-to-day scheduling responsibilities with Steven T. Early when Roosevelt ran for Vice President in 1920 and for his 1932 presidential campaign the candidate asked "Mac" to be his Press Officer. McIntyre served in several capacities in the administration and was as close to the President during his workday as Missy LeHand or Grace Tully Roosevelt's very well-known secretaries. FDR relied on his trusted friend to speak to the press organize his endless parade of meetings and manage the expectations of anyone who got close to him and "Mac" was present when Roosevelt learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor. McIntyre died a week before Christmas 1943 when Roosevelt was in the middle of his third term.<br /> <br /> A rare occasion to obtain one of the most prized of FDR volumes inscribed here to one of his most valued friends. Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the limitation page and presented to Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina President of the Dominican Republic. Limitation page states: "In commemoration of the visit of the President of the United States to the Pan American Peace Conference in South America November and December Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six seventy-five copies of his address have been designed and printed by the United States Government Printing Office Washington District of Columbia April Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-seven." The copy for President Rafael Molina was delivered to him on October 22 1937 with a note confirming delivery to Secretary Cordell Hull at the FDR Library Archives. <br /> <br /> President Rafael Trujillo was the dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 - 1961. During his time as president he was responsible for thousands of political deaths and assassinations. It was later learned that the CIA played a part in the assassination of Trujillo in 1961. Provenance: Book was acquired from a "senior executive" at the USGPO by New York bookseller Warren Berry. <br /> <br /> Records from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that "In all seventy-five copies were printed fifty copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and twenty-five copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases." The library documents also note that "names and titles of the dignitaries who are to receive the book also require careful research" indicating that mistakes were made and certain copies were held back. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. Horowitz "Carmichael Collection" and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin. <br /> This copy one of the "foreign" issues was nonetheless INSCRIBED to FDR's Sectretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau on a specially printed leaf: "To the Honorable Henry Morgenthau Jr Secretary of the Treasury of the United States" printed and inscribed below in the President's hand "From his old friend/ Franklin D. Inscribed to his Republican son First edition number 22 of 100 copies only presentation copy from Roosevelt to his son and daughter-in-law: "For Johnny and Anne with love from Pa Franklin D. Roosevelt. Christmas 1942". The volume was printed as a Christmas gift for White House staff and Roosevelt's family and collects Roosevelt and Churchill's early war speeches including some of their most famous orations. The book begins with Roosevelt's address to Congress the day after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor - "a date that will live in infamy". This is followed by his broadcast to the nation on 9 December 1941 his 11 December request to Congress for a declaration of war against Germany and Italy and his 6 January 1942 State of the Union address. Next is his joint Christmas 1941 radio greetings with Churchill from the south portico of the White House and Churchill's famous "What kind of a people do they think we are" address to a joint meeting of Congress on 26 December 1941. It concludes with a fold-out broadside facsimile of the 1 January 1942 United Nations declaration formalizing the anti-Axis alliance the basis of the future United Nations. John Aspinwall Roosevelt 1916-1981 was FDR's sixth and final child. He married the Boston socialite Anne 1916-1973 in 1938; they had three children and divorced in 1965. During the war he served in the Navy in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carriers Wasp and Hornet attaining the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war he pursued a successful career as a Wall Street banker and was a philanthropist. The only Republican among FDR's four sons he chaired Citizens for Eisenhower in 1952 and later served on President Eisenhower's Committee on Government Contracts promoting non-discrimination in federal employment. State Senate to his fourth term in the White House concentrating on family details: gatherings at Hyde Park; their mother's shyness which made social duties an ordeal; their grandmother's interference which James admits spoiled the Roosevelt children; their schooling which meant Groton and Harvard; later the unfavorable publicity the boys seemed to attract during the war and in their marriages.
