Warm Springs GA & New York: Georgia Warm Springs Foundation & The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis 1940 & 1941. First editions first printings of two separate titles each present in two copies. The copy of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation GWSF annual report in blue boards has Roosevelt's presentation inscription to the front blank: "To Basil O'Connor - the motor-power that turned the wheels from Franklin D. Roosevelt 6/30/41 Hyde Park". Below O'Connor has written: "This is #2 of 6 copies only in this binding. FDR has #1 - Keith Morgan has #3. BoC". The copy in green boards bears the ownership inscription to the front blank: "Basil O'Connor's Copy. #12 of 15 copies in this binding". In August 1921 while the Roosevelts were vacationing in Canada Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness diagnosed as polio. Roosevelt was then aged 39 and it is now thought he fell victim to Guillain-Barré syndrome an autoimmune disorder virtually unknown at the time. The illness left him with permanent paralysis from the waist down which he made every effort to overcome. In 1926 he purchased a resort at Warm Springs Georgia where he founded a hydrotherapy centre for the treatment of polio patients; it still operates as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. After Roosevelt became President he helped to found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis now known as the March of Dimes after its revolutionary fund raising radio campaign. Basil O'Connor was a lawyer who worked as chief fundraiser for the GWSF Wilson 2009. Keith Morgan was a New York insurance salesman hired by O'Connor to revitalise fundraising in the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash. The report is supplemented by "a brief history of the Foundation and a summary of its activities since its organization in 1927". In 1938 O'Connor alongside the now President Roosevelt would found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis NFIP. 4 vols octavo. GWSF annual report: photographic portrait frontispiece of Franklin D. Roosevelt several similar illustrations to the text. 2 copies of the GWSF annual report: 1 in original green cloth with green endpapers 1 in original blue boards with blue endpapers both with titles gilt and illustration mounted to front board as issued. 2 copies of The Story of the NFIP both in original blue boards titles to front board in white blue endpapers printed on burnished coarse-woven paper.
