‎Franklin D. Roosevelt Expresses Confidence He Will Secure the Democratic Nomination For President in 1932‎

‎He will prevail against the Republicans the media they control and conservative Democrats who oppose anti-Depression measures “In spite of the three elements of a clever Republican Organization a thoroughly unfair Republican Press and a small minority of Democrats I seem to be getting delegates and that after all is what counts.†An unpublished letter never before offered for sale In 1930 FDR was elected to a second term as New York governor by a margin of more than 700000 votes. The nation was then in the shadow of the Great Depression and by 1931 Roosevelt was taking significant innovative measures to try and combat it in New York. This not only increased his popularity in his own state but earned him national attention. His strong base in the then-most populous state made him an obvious candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination but Roosevelt was coy and denied being one all through 1931. Then with the North Dakota primary looming immediate ahead he decided that the time was right. On January 22 1932 he announced his candidacy for President. FDR's was an outsider's candidacy. Al Smith loyalists controlled a lot of the national party apparatus and the party’s last three presidential candidates – James Cox of Ohio the Wall Street lawyer John W. Davis and Al Smith – in addition to House Speaker John Garner and Senate minority leader Joe Robinson were on record supporting the stand-aside economic policies of the Hoover administration. Roosevelt's strength was his advocacy of doing something about the Depression and he predicted that his message would triumph and that the Democratic Party voters would back him when the time came. In the Spring of 1932 Roosevelt turned his attention increasingly outside his state of New York allowing him to escape the intra-state political turmoil but also to get a pulse on the national audience and its receptivity to his message. In April Roosevelt gave his great "Forgotten Man" radio address solidifying his perception as a “man of the peopleâ€. “These unhappy times†he said "call for plans that put their faith in the forgotten man at the bottom of the economic pyramid.†Al Smith summed up the response of the conservative wing of the Democratic party: “I will take off my coat and fight to the end against any candidate who persists in any demagogic appeal … setting class against class and rich against poor." Such was the basis of the "Stop Roosevelt" movement which saw his ascendancy as a challenge to the status quo and pro-business interests. In May FDR would give another great speech in Georgia along the same lines. As the Winter and early Spring primaries rolled out Roosevelt captured more and more support. In late April he won Pennsylvania beating Al Smith. However in mid May George White captured the Ohio primary the same day that FDR took West Virginia. This back and forth along with a crowded field meant that FDR could not be complacent about securing enough votes to guarantee his victory at the July convention. However on May 11 when West Virginia and Ohio reported it was FDR who stood atop the field and had the most committed delegates. Meanwhile Herbert Hoover advanced comfortably toward his renomination. The Republican organization and the media which was then overwhelmingly conservative saw in FDR's rise a threat to the laissez-faire economic attitude of the Republican Administration and many of the other Democratic candidates. They railed against his candidacy. Commander George C. Sweet was a U.S. Navy officer significant in promoting the early use of aircraft by the Navy. In September 1908 then-Lieutenant Sweet serving as a Naval observer reported favorably on the Wright Brothers airplane demonstration at Fort Meyer near Washington D.C. In 1909 Sweet was taken up with the Wright Brothers first Army flyer becoming the first Navy officer to travel in an airplane. Sweet was then assigned to the Navy’s school for airplane instruction and was thereafter a Navy engineer in Washington specializing in steam engines. In early 1919 Sweet was named assistant to the Naval Attache at the American embassy in Paris a particularly plum posting as the peace conference to end World War I was being carried on in Versailles. He and Roosevelt met back then and became personal and political confidants. Roosevelt was a careful man aware that his statements must be made guardedly to avoid giving aid and opportunity to his political enemies. His public correspondence was generally drafted by aides and was measured serious deliberate and discreet. However the private FDR was outgoing humorous and frank the life of the party and when he corresponded with those he could trust this side could show through. Sweet was such a man. We recently obtained this letter directly from the Sweet descendants. Typed letter signed to Commander Sweet on his gubernatorial letterhead from Warm Springs GA May 19 1932. "Dear George: That was a grand letter of yours and it cheered me up a lot. Each time that I get out of New York I realize more and more that there is a United States. Meanwhile in spite of the three elements of a clever Republican Organization a thoroughly unfair Republican Press and a small minority of Democrats I seem to be getting delegates and that after all is what counts. I get back to Albany May 30th. Do telephone and run down soon after that. As ever yours FDR. "P.s. I think that idea about Congress is a hundred per cent - for Congress but I should hate to see you in that bunch and you would be very very unhappy." In July FDR would receive the nomination in a close battle and sweep onward to victory in November. This historic letter appears to be unpublished as we can find no mention of it. It remained in the hands of the Sweet descendants until now and has never before been offered for sale unknown‎

‎Roosevelt Franklin D.‎

‎Franklin D. Roosevelt Praises Americans’ “courage daring initiative and enterpriseâ€‎

‎Continued westward expansion and exploration have made possible “a century of progress that is without parallelâ€. In 1893 historian Frederick Jackson Turner put forward his now famous “Frontier Thesis†which stated that the ideals and progress of America were directly tied to the frontier spirit and westward expansion. The factors that led Americans to explore developed a new type of citizen one that sought the challenges of exploration and the dynamics of pioneering. One example of how this American identity affected expansion was the exploration of California where starting in 1848 hordes of gold seekers arrived to tempt fortune. However more than a decade before that in 1835 the first clipper ship arrived in San Francisco. It was not gold that attracted early travelers to round the horn but that American bravery and the desire to push westward. With the cooperation of the U.S. Air Force and the use of such pioneering aviators as Charles A. Lindbergh the U.S. Post Office flew the mail from 1918 until 1927. Starting in 1927 airmail service was privatized and it was this move that gave birth to the commercial airline industry. Predecessors of TWA American and United were three of the first five airlines to receive government contracts. Soon airmail contract carriers were also carrying passengers. Thus did the carrying of the mails by air and opening of new routes have an unexpected consequence–the beginning of modern air transportation. So by the time Roosevelt was in the White House it was clear that new airmail routes also meant regular reliable air transportation to cities along those routes. The last major frontier for American air service was the Far East. In 1935 Pan American Airways obtained the contract for the San Francisco to China mail. The airline established a San Francisco-Canton mail route running its first commercial flight in a Martin M-130 on November 22 1935 to massive media fanfare. Now the U.S. was connected by air to China. A week before that flight amidst the fanfare of anticipation FDR wrote this Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead Washington November 15 1935 to Postmaster General James Farley marveling at the progress he had seen in his lifetime and the part that Americans had played to make it possible. “Please convey to the people of the Pacific Coast the deep interest and heartfelt congratulations of an air-minded sailor. Even at this distance I thrill to the wonder of it all. They tell me that the inauguration of the Trans-Pacific sky mail also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first clipper ship in San Francisco. The years between the two events mark a century of progress that is without parallel and it is our just pride that America and Americans have played no minor part in the blazing of new trails. There can be no higher hope than that this heritage of courage daring initiative and enterprise will be conserved and intensified.†His referernce to himself as an “air-minded sailor†shows that he and not an aide composed this letter. FDR here expresses the personal thrill he and his contemporaries felt at seeing so much progress firsthand. It is also no accident that he used the 1835 arrival of clippers in San Francisco as a benchmark nor tied that to the elements of American identity and contributions. He finished with a hope that these characteristics would also define the future and “that this heritage of courage daring initiative and enterprise will be conserved and intensified†language with which Turner would have approved unknown‎

‎Roosevelt Franklin D.‎

‎Franklin Roosevelt Authorizes a Clandestine Mission to Get Needed Aviation Technology From the British for the American Military‎

‎With entry into World War I an increasing possibility Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt is anxious to spirit away one of the superior seaplanes and engines the British had developed The only letter of a sitting or future President authorizing a covert mission we have seen reach the market A seaplane is a powered fixed-wing aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water. The utility of such a plane was apparent soon after the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. On March 28 1910 a Frenchman flew the first successful powered seaplane and in 1912 one of his countrymen constructed the first seaplane with a fuselage forming a hull. Throughout 1910 and 1911 American pioneering aviator Glenn Curtis worked on and developed a seaplane. Combining floats with wheels he was awarded the first Collier Trophy for U.S. flight achievement. The U.S. Navy believed a seaplane would have significant military uses and in February 1911 it took delivery of a Curtiss seaplane and soon tested landings on and take-offs from ships. Aircraft designers continued to try to improve the seaplane in the following years but no really viable model was discovered. For example a Curtiss seaplane was found to have a number of problems; it was underpowered its hulls were too weak for sustained operations and it had poor handling characteristics when afloat or taking off. “…he was successful a few months ago in actually getting out of England and over to this country a seaplane engine and we are very anxious that he obtain and bring over a complete seaplane…Of course if Homer gets a complete plane over to this side and it proves successful…the Navy will have got the latest type of foreign machine…What I want is the definite result of getting a complete seaplane over to this side and I do not care whether it is done officially unofficially or otherwise.†During World War I the British stepped up research and experimentation on seaplanes and made some significant advancements. One important innovation they made enabled the craft to overcome suction from the water more quickly and break free for flight much more easily. This made operating the craft far safer and more reliable. Other major design improvements were a larger and more capable hull and a new tail. Perhaps most importantly this British craft called the Felixstowe was powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle engines. It first flew in July 1916 proving greatly superior to the American models being produced by Curtis. Word of this new improved plane and its use of a vastly better engine soon reached the ears of Americans engaged in the field of seaplane engineering and construction. One of them was Arthur P. Homer a naval architect boat designer and engineer who was in 1916-17 affiliated with the Sterling Engine Company of Buffalo New York. He was a nephew of the famed artist Winslow Homer. Having strong connections in Britain Homer succeeded in spiriting away one of the Rolls-Royce engines which was quite a feat of industrial espionage and brought it back to America for analysis. He also informed the U.S. Navy Department of the British advances and the trophy he had managed to claim and the Navy wanted the technology of both the engine and the entire plane in American hands and badly. This was it must be recalled before there was any alliance or information sharing between the U.S. and Britain. Franklin D. Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy and also a leading proponent of the seaplane. In 1916 with the possibility of the U.S. entering the war Congress authorized the first major expansion of the Office of Naval Intelligence. So with that subject on his mind FDR got involved with Homer in a plan to purloin a compete British seaplane; but because of the potential risk to British/American diplomatic relations should it become public that the Americans were trying to steal British secrets the venture had to maintain secret and the Navy must have plausible deniability throughout. At least two other men were involved in the escapade. Capt. William D. MacDougall was Naval Attache to the U.S. Embassy in London and in the prime position to further the scheme. He had commanded numerous ships in the U.S. Navy in the past. He served in London until December 1917 when he left for active service in World War I. He ended his career as a rear admiral. William L. Tobey was a naval and mechanical engineer affiliated with the Boston Engineering Company. Typed letter signed on his Assistant Secretary of the Navy letterhead Washington December 29 1916 to MacDougall giving the go-ahead and setting the ground rules. “By the time this reaches you Mr. Arthur P. Homer will have reported to you. I want merely to send you this as a supplementary to the official letter which has gone. We are frankly letting Mr. Homer go on this trip somewhat as a gamble. All the Department is doing is to pay his expenses and in a way he is acting on behalf of the Sterling Engine Company. As you may have heard he was successful a few months ago in actually getting out of England and over to this country a seaplane engine and we are very anxious that he obtain and bring over a complete seaplane. A good many people thought that he was in the past boasting that he could do impossible things but I am frank to say that he has in nearly every case delivered the goods. Of course you are to act in the case as Senior Officer Present but it may be advisable for you not to appear officially in the matter in any way. That can best be determined by a conference between you and Tobey and Homer after the latter arrives and Tobey can keep in touch with the actual development of the situation. Of course if Homer gets a complete plane over to this side and it proves successful his company will probably get an order for engines but at the same time the Navy will have got the latest type of foreign machine and you can see from this why the Department is sending Homer over to do his best in conjunction with you and Tobey. I do not want to tie your hands with too definite instructions and am writing along this same line to Mr. Tobey. What I want is the definite result of getting a complete seaplane over to this side and I do not care whether it is done officially unofficially or otherwise. I know you are having a most interesting time and I hope you will write me at any time unofficially if there is anything I can do.†The necessity for this becomes apparent in this postscript. Just three months after MacDougall received this letter the U.S. entered the war on Britain’s side. It quickly sent a mission to London led by Raynal Bolling to determine which Allied aircraft should be produced in the United States and seek joint production. As regards the seaplane Bolling was told flat out that Rolls-Royce was unwilling to share engineering specifications and allow its engines to be manufactured in the U.S. despite the alliance and that the British government would not force it to do so. Only after much effort was an arrangement made to license the Rolls-Royce technology and allow manufacture in the U.S unknown‎

‎Franklin Roosevelt Invites a Governor to His Famed First Inauguration‎

‎In 1933 the nation was in the grips of the Great Depression. The stock market was down 89% from 1929 and a quarter of the people were unemployed. Of those who did have jobs another 25% took wage cuts or were working part time. And back then most homes had but one wage-earner. The gross national product had fallen by almost 50%. Lives were devastated there were many suicides head of families lost their self-respect children were hungry everywhere many teens had to leave school and lost their opportunities for education massive numbers of people were homeless and living in shantytowns. It was a landscape of despair.President Hoover had not done much to alleviate this suffering so in the 1932 presidential election Franklin D. Roosevelt Governor of New York had swept into office. Now the awesome responsibility of salvaging a nation wracked by poverty and self-doubt would be on his shoulders. People awaited his March 4 1933 inauguration with both expectancy and trepidation. What could one man President or not possibly do in this desperate situationAt the end of January 1933 Roosevelt was engaged in selecting his cabinet and making arrangements for his inauguration. Invitations to state governors were high on his priority list. Typed letter signed on his personal letterhead New York January 26 1933 to "His Excellency Wilbur L. Cross Governor of Connecticut Hartford Connecticut." "My dear Governor: It will give Mrs. Roosevelt and me great pleasure if you can attend the Inaugural ceremonies on March 4th. It is my thought that we should all cooperate toward every possible saving in government expenditures and that therefore no State should send any of its National Guard or Naval Militia to take part in the Inaugural parade."I understand from Rear Admiral Grayson the Chairman of the Inaugural Committee in Washington that an automobile will be provided in the parade for each Governor and one or two members of his Personal Staff and that each car will carry the State Flag. I shall be happy of course if any of the citizens of your State will come to the Inauguration and will march in the parade if they care to do so. The arrangements for this should be taken up with Rear Admiral Cary T. Grayson who lives in Washington. I hope that after the Inaugural ceremonies at the Capitol you will come immediately to the White House to an informal luncheon. The parade starts immediately thereafter." The letter is stamped as received Feb. 6 1933.Governor Cross treasured this letter and it remained in his personal effects and with his family until very recently when we obtained it from a direct descendant. The inauguration of 1933 turned out to be the most important in American history with only Lincoln's first inauguration being comparable. But whereas Lincoln's inaugural address simply confirmed Southern fears and events took their own course Roosevelt's speech shot like an electric bolt through the country and changed the chemistry. It injected hope in the American people encouraged them right then and there and began to banish the clouds of despair. He said "I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth the whole truth frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured will revive and will prosper. So first of all let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself - nameless unreasoning unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." His line about "fear itself" is of course famous and one of the greatest statements in any American inaugural address. And Governor Cross was there to hear it unknown‎

‎FRONTIER BOYS IN THE GRAND CANYON OR A SEARCH FOR TREASURE‎

‎Cleveland: Arthur Westbrook Company n. d. ca 1908. 1908. First edition. First edition. 16mo. Color pictorial wrappers 258 pp. Jim and Tom's adventure in the area of the Grand Canyon while on the run from the Cheyenne. Includes a spicy run down the Grand Canyon. "There was one place we ran through that struck me with terror. We came upon it early one afternoon. There was a sharp plunge downward of the river and on all sides it was beaten into foam among the rocks. In the center there was a swift clear run that ended in big successive waves. We took it fairly in the middle. Jim had become to good a steerer to be beaten now. But when we struck the waves our boat plunged as in a heavy sea. Much of it would have made one seasick."---- taken from p. 205. Fine bright copy. Arthur Westbrook Company, n. d. (ca 1908). unknown‎
